Hi Yammie, Loved this video! and River Road is one of my "warm up" rides a lot of the time. I've got the 2019 DCT and yes, it handles great on the twisties. No need to worry about the leans... the "peg feelers" will scrape long before you loose traction. In addition to the Standard model features, the DCT has walking mode both forward and reverse, automatic with paddle shifter override, and manual mode with the paddles, and no clutch. I really debated going with the DCT, but I'm glad I did it. I really don't miss the clutch in traffic, but slow speed maneuvering... well that's a new skill. Still super easy to ride... in fact, the only hard part was not grabbing for the clutch and shift peg. Let me know if you ever want to try the DCT and I'll be happy to take a ride. Ride Safe! and keep the videos coming.

Owned a Harley for a couple years. One day I rode a GW. Bought one a week later. My wife asked if I was selling the Harley. I said “no, I’m sure I’ll still ride it sometimes” A year later I dusted off the cob webs and sold the Harley, never looked back. Bonus points for no longer needing to clean dripped oil off my garage floor.

... And cars too obviously, like this video. It's just a two wheeled car. This bike, its looks, it gives the association of overweight wife and aching joints in cold weather. The people that own this machine can probably tell 40 years worth of stories of their career and non of them is interesting. Legend is that if you've ever even looked up the specs for the Goldwing you are bombarded with calls from telemarketers trying to sell you vacation houses and hearing aids. Not for me. I still have a good 60 years before this bike will start making sense to me

The chips were a proper presentation of the Goldwing's capabilities. When my daughter was 15 she worked at a local McDonalds and I would frequently pick her up from work with the Goldwing. She would eat an order of fries on the way home in total comfort. I had that Goldwing for 10 years, the longest I have keep any bike in my adult ADHD life. I've had sport bikes, cruisers, standards and currently a F850GSA and a KLX300D - a very large assortment of bikes and the Goldwing was the best motorcycle I have ever owned period. I frequently pulled off 600 mile day rides just for the fun of it on that bike and loved it. Thanks to Yammie and Spite for not going out there and trashing the Goldwing "just because" but appreciating it for what it is and how good it is at that.

@jpayne8096
@jpayne8096 2 года назад
I'm poised to buy a new Goldwing, rode both, liked the DCT but the slow speed maneuvering was scary, as my 40+ years of riding a manual had me scared to rely on the DCT to do the feathering of it's clutch to keep me balanced while doing full lock maneuvering. Haven't had enough seat time to figure out if I could do it.... thats going to be my deciding factor 🤔

@@jpayne8096 As a DCT owner, the key is to use the creeper gear for low speed. Sure it is slower than the manual bike but for the rest of the time you have the DCT which transforms the bike. A DCT Wing is sensational, a manual is just another bike you will get sick of and trade in.

So glad you guys got a chance to ride the Wing. I own the exact bike that you tested. One thing I noticed while watching the video: were you aware that it's a 6-speed? You never got out of fifth gear. They dropped the tank size down by one gallon when making the current version lighter but I get the same range out of my tank as I did on my 2008 Wing with one gallon more. Now they have 4 valves per cylinder and a square bore/stroke. The old 1800's had 103 HP but got worse mileage. Loving my '21. Good job.

The FJR could have been a contender for best bike ever, but they messed up the transmission big time. Typical Japanese, they seem to not understand that Americans need an overdrive 6th gear, not a wasted close ratio useless 6th gear that is only good for 45mph. They finally put a 6th gear on the FJR, but didn't put on an overdrive, and the gear can crack. Maybe in 2030, motorcycles will finally get a true overdrive transmission.

Rode my dad's '08 Goldwing around for a few hundred miles last year, just crazy bikes. Was pulling 30deg plus of lean at 50mph 2 up, and generally screaming around everywhere. Compared to my 80's Honda it felt like a nimble little sportbike (above 25mph anyways). Was always amazed by the confidence it inspired, threw that damn near 1k lb beast around the corners all day. Could squeal tire with brakes or throttle at pretty much any speed, yet lots of control. Not twitchy, but very responsive. Arguably one of the best bikes, definitely the best touring bike ever. My dad sold his for personal reasons, but I plan on buying my own soon. As someone who likes to ride all day, there's no better bike for it. This is where Honda's insane motorcycle engineering really shines. It doesn't seem like a bike like this could be possible, but I promise it is. You haven't lived till you've ridden a bike with a flat 6 with more liters than some sedans lol.

My BMW GTL is a great tourer but I can bang corners like a madman! I admit, I haven't tried the GW but I always thought (at my own peril) it is heavy handed. something to keep in mind when you're talking about the price of a gold wing, you can't kill these bikes, there are still gold wings from the 1980s out kicking around with hundreds of thousands of miles on them. I'd guess one could buy a 10 - 15 year old 'Wing for not an insane amount of $$. Put 10k miles on it over a year. And then sell it for not much less than you bought it for. Seems a reasonably inexpensive way for a couple to knock out a of few of the long rides they've been talking about without fully committing to the lifestyle.

Yes, manual clutch can make you feel like a total badas* when you are hitting it just right, up or down - but the computerized DCT in Sport mode will outperform any manual rider for sheer acceleration. I had the same reaction when I purchased my father-in-law's 85 GW Aspencade 1200 after he quit riding. Took it from SoCal to Carmel on Highway 1. Couldn't believe how comfortable and how well it handled(especially at slow speeds with that 16" front wheel.) I was listening to the radio & cassette player, all my luggage was in the saddlebags and rear trunk. When I arrived in Carmel, I was refreshed, no bungee cords holding on duffle bags and my helmet fit in the trunk. Put over 125,000 miles on it before selling it a few years ago. Have ridden the newer 6 cylinder Wings and they are even more impressive. Hard to beat Hondas engineering and the decades of development Honda has delivered.......plus they listen to Wing riders for their improvements. Might buy another someday.

Dudes, I've got the same exact configuration and it's well worth every penny. I've had mine since Oct of last year and already have 3,500 miles on it. That's impressive in itself due to most of my riding having been done in sub-45 degree temps here in Utah. Just got back from a nice long trip down to AZ with it, and it was everything I expected on a long journey. Truly can't wait to rack up the miles on it this summer! You guys failed to mention that it has Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. It really is completely tech'd out! I'm happy to have the 6 speed manual, but the DCT guys are extremely happy with theirs, as well. I'm only 35, so I still prefer to "row my own gears," but I can definitely see the allure of the DCT for the older guys with arthritis, or just want an effortless experience. Truthfully, with all the features, the exhaust note and how well the bike handles in this current iteration, you can see they were trying to capture a younger market, and they definitely succeeded. I intend to keep this bike for hundreds of thousands of miles, like many Goldwing owners. This, and my 250 Rally really are the perfect combination of bikes for people who are looking for a "Jack of all trades" couple of bikes.

I have had several 70's and 80's Goldwings. The great thing is that once you are rolling they handle like just about any other Honda from 500cc up. Honda built amazing machines throughout it's entire history, and all of them are a joy to ride, each in their own rite. The 1st factory Interstate models fully equipped for touring came out in 1981 with the 1100 flat-4, and the 1st Aspencade was on the 1982 GL1100 platform. Even then they came with helmet intercoms, radios, tape decks and CB radios. The 1985 GL1200 was the first Goldwing available with fuel injection, and the GL1500-6 was the first one with and electric reversing gear, and fuel injection standard on all models. I have yet to own & ride any of the Goldwing sixes, but even the the 1981 CBX1000-6 was a pretty decent sport/touring bike for it's time, and a fun long-distance ride. The only thing I rode that even came close was the 1885-1990 Suzuki GV1400 Cavalcade, which, in some ways, outdid even the Goldwing Aspencade 1200. It's a shame Suzuki did not keep the Cavalcade going to the present day.
