I want to add that to me the controls were more than solid. The game is easily the most fun I've had mechanically all year. To the point that I did a couple of non-planned speedruns just to see what you can do and it was great. Not only that but the game will also get some more worlds in 2018 for free.
A Hat in Time is a 5-star game for me. While it isn't doesn't reach the same highs as genre-defining masterpieces like Mario 64 and Sunshine, I would place it on the slightly-lower Psychonauts-tier of "it has its issues, but what it does right, it does oh-so-right." Despite being the developer's first attempt, Hat Kid controls like an absolute dream, and AHiT has some of the most mechanically satisfying movement in any 3D platformer I've ever played. Toss in a boatload of charm, wacky characters, a charming script, and some of the most imaginative scenarios in any platformer I've played (rivaling Psychonauts, and putting Mario to shame), and you have one of my favorite games this generation.
Galaxy40k Movement is one of the most important things in a game for me. I'm very glad to hear that it's so solid in this game. Some of my favorite games of the last decade have been games like Bayonetta, Super Mario Galaxy and Sunset Overdrive, because the movement in those games is so mechanically satisfying.
Galaxy40k Man your selling me mate! I'm considering buying it on PS4 but I've been hesitant as it's £23 and I wasn't sure it's worth that money?... So it's charming and your character controls beautifully!? Tempted...
Mark Wheeler did you buy it yet? If not just get it. The credits started rolling after 11 hours but I completed the game after 14. So there is enough content
Looks really fun. I go back and play the original Spyro games on my PS3 like... at least once a year. A good platformer sounds like a warm cup of hot chocolate right now.
Mr. 2006 Doesn't mean we can't show gratitude. Plus he's only a part timer and one of the other allies could've reviewed it if he couldn't, so it's really good he took the time to write it.
This looks exactly like what I'd make a kid play if I wanted them to fall in love with videogames. Charming, fun, with great controls and a lot of personality. Heck, not even a kid, I'd say this is a great opportunity to introduce anyone to videogames, as long as they have a taste for this kind of light hearted - filled with personality stuff.
A Hat In Time doesn't do what Yooka Laylee was trying to do, which is to target Banjo Kazooie, specifically. For some bizarre reason, everyone uses Banjo Kazooie as the model for what a 3d Platformer is, but Banjo Kazooie and Rare always had a very different take on 3d Platformers than any other company. Specifically Sega and Nintendo.
That's the brilliance of using the game's soundtrack in the video review. There is no need to mention it because you heard it. if it matters, like it seems to matter to you, then you have the information you need.
The song used during the intro and outro of this video is "clocktowers under the sea" Very calming and peaceful, in contrast to one of my favorites, train rush (which was also used during the video)
@RaineTCG I personally put soundtrack above graphics, a good soundtrack is a reasonable selling point to me as long and they doing a couple of other elements well
I’m a little tired of the “it’s a love letter to platform games” like... it’s not made just so that it can pay homage to the genre, it’s actually one of the few remaining creative pieces, and I haven’t loved a game this much since portal2 came out who tf knows how long ago.
I find it odd that a game where the main character doesn't speak is somehow full of personality... My favorite platforms all have speaking characters: Spyro, Ratchet and Clank, Uncharted, Soul Reaver, Sly Cooper, and Jak and Daxter
Actually she does have some lines for example: "DOWN WITH THE MAFIA!", "BURN! BURN!", "Oh, hi there!", "Bye!", "You're free!" and "Goodbye cruel world...". There's just no text boxes and most of the time these lines are said outside of cutscenes and are not acknowledged.
Anyone who doesn't pick this up because of Jontron. I hope you read through all the credits on various movies, music, and tv shows as well. Because I can guarantee you aren't going to have any entertainment if you base what you do off of other people's beliefs or opinions. Basically, if you'd play the game if it didn't have jontron in it. Play it anyway. Its a good game.
"Sometimes moving the camera doesn't work as intended"? I never ran into issues with moving the camera, could you give an example of when it acted weird for you? (Yes, I understand not everybody runs into all issues, but I also have no friends who played it have it act up when manually moving the camera)
I JUST got this and it is AMAZING!!!! Holy crap! This is the second coming of platformers outside of Nintendo's Mario Odyssey. It oozes charm, fun, and simplicity. I LOVE IT!
This looks fantastic! Shame there's no Switch port planned (as of right now), portability for this would have been great. That being said, at least I'm getting it on PS4!
It probably wont happen since the switch doesn't support the engine the game is made in so it would take a lot of work to port it over which would be pretty difficult with only 10 people working on it.
I think this game can indeed push the genre forward (but the act of "push the genre forward" it's actually several years during which other developers take elements from the game and add their own twists, so it's not possible to "push the genre forward" after just one week of its release, the genre take time to move).
This has been said many times already; but the scoring system is odd. Everything in this review sounded to me that the reviewer thought this was a "good" game and then it's scored "Excellent". I don't know if this is because "Decent" didn't do it justice and 4 is considered to be the de facto "good" score, that EZA values "Excellent" less than I do, or some other reason. The jump from 3.5 stars meaning "Decent" to 4 stars "Excellent" feels too big to me and this game sounded to me like the reviewer thought it belonged somewhere between the two. Compare to how people often use the terms "Decent" and "Excellent" in real life: - Hey, Brandon! Is this game any good? - It's decent, answers Brandon calmly with the slightest shrug of the shoulders. Decent would possibly not elicit any more response than this. Perhaps not even a thumbs up. vs - It's EXCELLENT! Brandon exclaims enthusiastically. If instead answering it as excellent with an almost neutral tone and a thumbs up, this would feel like it doesn't live up to the rating just given.
Yeah, I always thought that 3 stars should be decent, followed by "good", "great", "excellent" and "masterpiece". I don't quite remember what they actually use after "excellent", but the ranking system seems a bit off.
From what I am reading this is a digital release only? That sucks. I prefer to try before I buy. My kids would enjoy this game. Shoot, I would too. Was going to add it to the Gamefly Q in case we can't get Odyssey. At least they'd have a fun platformer. Oh well... maybe there's a demo on PSN... - Cheers folks!
In Steam you can return a game you don't like it if you played it less than 2 hours and you ask for the refund earlier than 14 days after the purchase.
Wulbulbul Lubbubwublub don’t know what you mean by what is Mario Odysee. Many reviews I’ve read have stated, again< that it “doesn’t push the genre forward” from Mario 64. Which is again, silly.
suplextrain “it suggests that no games can improve or innovate”. What needs to be understood about the design is that there are very few empirical truths. Most of it is playing the numbers, and most often those numbers are dictated by trends. Every decision you make as a designer is going to alienate some people and attract other people. This is the case with any creative endeavor. The only real goal is to have an acceptable number of people agree with you. Therefore any discussion about what is better or worse is BS and usually only held by people who don’t know what they’re talking about. If Mario Brothers suddenly became a story driven lore based movie-game, some gamers would call that a “massive step forward” and Mario “finally entering the modern era”. But other people would call that a complete betrayal and a horrible idea for the series. This is exactly what happened to Lords of Shadow. Look at Tomb Raider. Some people love the makeover and call it A massive step forward. Other people say it’s barely a video game and will never play it. Some of those people used to be tomb raider fans. The point being, that there is no such thing as better and there are no such things as steps forward. The only thing that could possibly count as a step forward is when a game attempts to be more trendy and follow the fads. Buts fads come and go. What is popular today might not be popular tomorrow. XCOM was a massive success in the early 90s. Then game magazines that it needed to be more moderate to compete with Warcraft w. They did that and became a real time strategy game. It yanked so hard that it was fifteen years before we got a new x-com game that, guess what, went back to being its “outdated” awesome self. Then what was old was new again. What “nobody wanted” everyone wanted.
I really want to buy this on PS4 but it's £23, is it worth that much? Seriously it's up there with Mario level quality gaming? If so we need to stop buying CODs and Destiny's etc guys and all support this game and others in future.
neverend it was developed with a budget of around $40,000, one of the lowest budgets I've ever seen for a modern 3D roaming game. I'm stilling having a hard time wrapping my head around that Yes, it looks a little cheap in some places, and it *is* cheap looking, but man is it a fun game. Seriously, Hat Kid's movement mechanics may be my favorite in any 3D platformer, including Mario Odyssey. In MO, Mario felt stiff compared to Hat Kid, which I had played AHiT a werk before Odyssey came out.
That's why it's called A Hat in TIME, they traveled to the future to rip off Super Mario Odyssey :v Ok, now seriously, I played this game and it takes elements from a lot of previous games and combines them in a very smooth way, I found Mario 64, Mario Sunshine, Psychonauts, Crash Bandicoot, Wind Waker, Sly Cooper and Luigi's Mansion. If it happens to have similarities with Mario Odyssey, it would be from taking inspiration from the same sources.
@tinableachertv The new version of "Pop Fiction" is from Easy Allies as well, known as "Game Sleuth." It's made by the same guy who did the other show.
There is something strange about the aesthetic with the color variations combined with the speed of the camera that gives me a head ache every time I watch any footage of this game. I can't quite figure out what the trigger is as I'm not prone to motion sickness or the like while playing or watching games. Maybe it's the camera being so fast with no acceleration/deceleration to soften the edges, I don't know, but unfortunately this looks like it will have to be a pass for me.
Probably it's because they are new, at least comparing them with IGN, GameSpot, GameXplain or even Angry Joe Also, there si not uncommon to find channels with high production value but not that much subscribers, and reasons can vary. Some times they are not constant uploading videos(like Elder Geek), there are others who focus on other commentary rather than reviews or gameplays (like Super Bunnyhop or Errant Signal)
That's quite a high rating. I didn't like it as much, feels quite unfinished to me, especially the story, which is very rushed. Still it was enjoyable, but with a bit more polish and planning it could have been much better.
Well, I'd still recommend buying it sometime later then. Seriously, it's a phenomenal game, and the devs have even promised free DLC worlds to come in the future, as a result of their very successful kickstarter.
