When past interventions have not only failed but created more problems they must be addressed, but simply scrapping what was once considered necessary may not be the right prescription. Understanding the why behind past work on a 400 year old wood panel can be critical in deciding what to do about it said old work and how to move forward. Though it may seem straight forward and simple, looks can be deceiving and the project can in fact be a heady proposition.

Paints tend to darken when they dry, not only that, but his use of blending and mixing the right shade and having a keen sense of colour theory is what you're seeing, both technique and knowhow. And older varnishes when they age do take on a certain dark yellow-y colour, because of the way the Sun's rays affect it, you can see this occur on old plastic toys where the white becomes a white-yellow. Applying a clear varnish does add a very slight tint to the picture, because the glossy finish magnifies the colours, essentially, acting as a thin lens, which is why it is applied first so that the colour matches when the final protective layer is added, as not much changes between the two layers of varnish. Baum does go over this in other videos, too, kinda learnt through osmosis or something idk.

@Stadtpark90
@Stadtpark90 2 года назад
I wonder what the reason was to split the painting? The upper part is a portrait of some upper class woman from the 15th century, while the lower part makes it part of a religious tradition that goes back some 1400 years further. I wonder who thought that this was improper later on? The church? Or the family, who just wanted a portrait of their (Great- Great- ...) Grandma? And what would have been the symbolism in the first place to want yourself depicted like that? I guess, that depicting yourself as the Virgin Mary was inappropriate, but being another less prominent character was ok? Or was the woman from the portrait known for wanting her enemies head on a plate symbolically speaking? (Just a not so subtle way to depict the position of power she was in? Or a comment on her emotional setup?)
@Quickened1
@Quickened1 2 года назад
@@Stadtpark90 perhaps you've got it all wrong. I believe it was the artist's interpretation of the scriptures, and that the woman is either Herodias, or her daughter. It likely would have been separated because she, and her daughter both, are two of the most despised women in the history of mankind, and the statement being made by separating the two pieces is to express the idea, that the head of one of the most righteous men on earth, should not have his likeness displayed with such wickedness, and be called art, at least in the eyes of the righteous of this world... And yes, I'm aware that her attire is reminiscent of middle age clothing, but since the artist lived in those times, he possibly chose to use that style of dress, because it was what he was familiar with...

Since he mentions stripping screws, here's some advice for everyone that has helped me a lot. If you ever strip a screw, take a rubber band (preferably one of the wider ones) and put one layer across the top of the screw head then put in your screw driver. It will allow you to remove the screw and replace it.
@aserta
@aserta 2 года назад
This works. Couple of things to add, be ready to give constant pressure to the screw, and don't be afraid to move to another section of rubber if you feel like the one you're using has pierced.
@masterfulmoonlighter5402
@masterfulmoonlighter5402 2 года назад
Yeah no that doesn't work most of the time, if you stripped your screw enough that a rubber band can get the traction that means there's still enough material on the screw head for the screwdriver itself to grab onto, a rubber band has almost no grip or traction because it's not a real rubber, more or less a synthetic rubber made out of mostly vinyl
@kisielthe1st
@kisielthe1st 2 года назад
The best advice for preventing stripping screws is using the appropriate driver. There are 3 common cruciform screw heads in use. Philips, Pozidriv and JIS. All use a driver with a different geometry and each one ( If you use the wrong one, you end up with a mangled driver and a stripped screw unless the screw has been put in finger tight. If the screw had so little breakout torque than the "rubber band" tip worked that means you were a dummy and used the wrong driver. Just use the appropriate driver to loosen/tighten screws and bolts.
@Psychlist1972
@Psychlist1972 2 года назад
@Jennaiii the rubber band trick is a good one. :) @@kisielthe1st In this video, they were brass screws with a slotted head. He did all he needed to do: pre-drill the holes. Brass screws tend to both strip out, but also twist the head off. Sometimes you even cut the threads first with an equivalent steel screw. "There are 4 common cruciform screw heads in use. Philips, Pozidriv and JIS. " What is the fourth? Unless you repair imported electronics, outside of Japan, one is very unlikely to run across JIS. I do with synthesizers, but that's it. Here in the US, even Pozidrive is very rare. I run across it primarily with euro drawer and hinge products.

3:58 needle nose tweezers are perfect for this job, better, if you can get a lockpicker's tweezers which has the nose formed such that it can grab the pins, or in this case screw perfectly. Also, a good investment is a gunsmith's screw driver set OR a carburetor screw driver set (either of which works), because those types of screwdrivers have a specially made head that's properly made to engage 100% with the screw head, rather than the normal kind. Some carbie screwdrivers even have a mechanism that can grab the head of the screw and keep it in place (generally for sizes 4 mm and up, tho, i imagine there's probably more petite ones that i haven't seen).

Amazing video, as is expected! But the music paired with the image while you did the retouching made me giggle a bit. It was such a soothing lullaby sound paired with such a morbid painting 🤣 You did a great job on fixing the image though. I would love to see the whole painting united as one piece.

been having a tough time lately, and i just needed to watch something more chill, so i decided to watch some restorations that i haven't seen yet. anyway, i must be more stressed than i thought because when the music came on over the footage of the retouching i almost started crying. it was so absolutely what i didn't know i needed. i really appreciate all these videos but this one was extra soothing

Whilst I love watching the preparation and background work, my favourite is the retouching, it's watching a blemish disappear before your eyes, that magic...one minute there's a gap...and then it's gone! I love watching.

I always know you will be able to bring a painting back to life so to speak. This one, however small had me wondering if you would be able to match it up as it is on the most viewed area. Of course you did. Bravo! When you said that you found the rest of the painting my heart skipped a beat. Congratulations, the composition makes sense now. As always, another painting saved...Thank you

The Upper Portion of the Original Painting sold at Auction in Sept. 2006 at Koller Auctions for CHF 281,000 Swiss Francs. I think this is over $300,000 in dollars. The owners should get the two halves put together by Baumgartner! That would be a sight to see!

So cool to see the potential whole painting at the end! It looks like it might've been a Judith and Holofernes of Salome painting, though given that it looks like a Flemish/Dutch painting, Judith could be more likely since it was fashionable at the time of it's creation for noblewomen to be painted as her with their husbands being the model for Holofernes's head (who knows why).
@reginaromsey
@reginaromsey 2 года назад
Judith wouldn’t be holding Holofernes head on a plate. She was a cut and run Lady who whacked her John, grabbed the head, wrapped it up and quietly sashayed out for a stroll through the enemy camp with her maid. This makes her a Jewish Heroine rather than an abused child.

What gets me about this portion of the painting is the stark contrast of the realism of the head versus the almost cartoony composition of the gloved hand. Since we do not have the rest of the woman in the painting to compare the style too, it feels like a toon hand. It's odd to look at next to a decapitated head that is bruised and the skin has started to sallow and green with decomposition. I kinda love it. Beautiful job as always Julian. May the two halves be reunited one day and may Baumgartner Restoration be the one to do it. Edit: well Julian was able to find the top half. Don't I look silly for not waiting until the end lol. And yes, now that I see the woman as a whole, the gloves absolutely make sense.
