A Healthy Staple Diet For Sugar Gliders | Preparing The SGS 2 Diet

Written recipe:
Vegetables:
+ 150g butternut squash
+ 140g sweet potato
+ 50g carrots
Fruit:
+ 70g papaya
+ 20g melon
+ 20g Persimmon
Protein:
- 1 boiled, peeled egg (or 50g chicken breast, cooked in only water. The egg is in the original recipe, I simply like to offer different protein as well.)
Also add:
- 1 Tablespoon (18g) linseed soaked in hot water/hot chicken broth
- 2 Teaspoons (10g) Wombaroo High Protein Supplement
- 1 Tablespoon (15g) natural, probiotic yoghurt
- 1/4 (1.25g) Teaspoon acacia gum
- 1 Teaspoon (5g) bee pollen
- 1 Tablespoon (20-25g) wheatgerm
One batch makes around 30-40 cubes. I only have 2 trays, that is why I am only showing you 20 in this video.
This batch actually made 40 cubes in total.
I serve mine 1 cube per glider per night. I take them out in the morning before the feeding and let them thaw in the fridge until the evening. Twice a week I add calcium to their mix.

The Traffic Light System
**Green Fruits & Veggies - At least 80%**
The GREEN items with a ratio of 1:1 and above. Use mostly these items:
Papaya, Rosemary, Bok Choi, Squash (Spaghetti), Raspberries, Blackberries, Celery, Squash (Butternut), Custard Apple, Java (Jambolian) Plum, Apple (with Skin), Pear, Iams(UK Only) or James Wellbeloved, or Orijen cat biscuits, Persimmon (Sharon Fruit).
GREEN with a ratio of between 0.97 - 0.7:1
Guava, Green Beans, Carrots, Squash (Acorn), Blackcurrant, Mango, Sugar Snap / Snow Peas, Rutabaga, Dates, Cherries (Sweet), Apricots, Broccoli (florets), Sweet Potato, Kiwi, Strawberry, Cucumber, Broccoli, Mange Tout.
**Amber Fruits & Veggies - At most 20%**
AMBER - use only 20% in weight of these
Dandelion Greens, Spinach, Watercress, Kale, Collard Greens, Grapefruit (Pink, Red, & White), Pineapple, Tangerine/Mandarin, Lime, Orange (Navel), Raspberries, Lemon, Fig (fresh), Kumquat, Cantaloupe Melon, Honeydew Melon, Blueberry, Star Fruit (Carambola), Cauliflower, Pumpkin.
**Red Fruits & Veggies - Very little**
RED - Use very sparingly or not at all if toxic
Chinese (Asian Pear), Peach, Plum, Pomegranate, Nectarine, Banana, Tomato, Physalis (Cape Gooseberry), Passion Fruit, Sweetcorn.
Avoid: Rhubarb, Avocado* (Extremely high in fat), Grapes (Have caused illnesses and death in other species)

** Recipe for Turkey Balls **
Turkey (or chicken) mince, a bit of grated sweet potato, butternut squash, apple, one raw egg.
Mix together and separate out one tablespoon at a time, roll into a meatball and cook in the oven at 150 degrees for 20 minutes until golden brown. Feed ½ ball per glider.

They can have their treats as usual as soon as they have started to eat their diet.
Some days they will eat more than others, don't let that alarm you. As long as they go back to their normal feeding habit the next day or the day after that it's ok. Sometimes they eat too many treats and are not so hungry anymore. Very often they are influenced by the moon phase and will sleep longer and eat less during the night.
If you feel like your sugar glider might be sick and that is why it is not eating, please take it to a vet immediately. There is no magic recipe for healing a sick sugar glider.

Do you Need to give them the Diet only at night time ? And did they need the Diet every time of there live or is this Diet only for a view weeks (I’m sorry for my English writings I’m German :) )

Hi, Jannis. As they normally sleep during the day, you do not need to give them their food during the day. At night, when they wake up is when they should have their fresh/thawed food available. It is called a diet, but it is meant to be fed for their whole life in order to ensure that they receive nutritious food.

I have 4 gliders on sgs2 diet. This is how i feed mine : 2 tsp wambaroo ,1tsp.bee pollen, 2Tbsp gerber oatmeal cereal, 1/8 flexseed (GROUND),(grounded )chia seed, 1-1/4TSP. ACIA POWDER OR ACIA GUM.VEGGIES: 1CUP BOCCHO , 1-3/4 COLLARD GREENS, 1-1/4 KALE. ..FRUITS: 1-1/3 KIWI, 1TBSP. PEARS, TBSP. THEN A PINCH OF GLIDER BOOST. THEN EVERY OTHER DAY A PINCH OF GLIDER BOOST & GLIDER CAT. NOW MIND U I HAVE 4 GLIDERS!!! AM I DOING THIS RIGHT!??? OR DO I NEED TO DOUBLE IT!????. Protien- 1 cup of blended chicken. That equals 4oz.

Please re-watch the video as it describes in detail how this diet should be prepared correctly. Also note that collard greens and kale are both orange/amber and should be fed in small amounts and that ideally you would add more fruits/vegetables to the mixture (for example butternut squash, sweet potato, celery, apple, papaya, ...) :-)

HPW is just a mix of honey, eggs, bee pollen and so on. It is just the vitamins in a liquid form. So yes, you have to feed a nice mix of fruits and vegetables along with the HPW, preferably of good ca:p ratios - you can still follow the traffic light system for picking out the right fruits and vegetables for them!

Thank you soooo much for this. This is the diet I'm trying to see if I can get mine on (they're coming this weekend!). Sorry if this is not a great question but do we use the same amount of grams if we swap out carrots for celery or swapping in general? There are groups that give diet ideas, but I need to wait to be accepted into them and I don't exactly have that time. And as I understand correctly, you don't need to serve fruits and veggies on the side with this staple because it includes them, yes?

If you swap, make sure you swap with fruit/veggies from the same group (Green 1, Green 2, ...), then you can use the same amount too. No, the diet already has the fruit & veggies inside and there is no need to serve any additionally :-)

No. If you follow the SGS 2 diet insects are *not* a requirement, they are only used as occasional snacks. That being said they really do love their live insects a lot so I prefer to continue feeding them every couple days :-)

My gliders are very picky ad so far I tried a number of diets which they stop eating after a couple of days so I will be trying this one for sure! Do you make two batches with different fruit and veg so they have a variety? Or do they still eat it as normal even after a couple of days?

The great thing about the SGS 2 is that it suggests the amount of a certain vegetable or fruit that you should add to your mix. Like 20g fruit from the orange column and so on. If you join the Sugar Gliders UK group there are even "recipes" for the SGS 2 that the creator of the diet has added to make it easier for you to prepare the diet.

Thank you for your videos, I'm currently in process of getting 2 joeys and the videos are confirming my interests in them though I have a few questions. Can the sgs2 diet be started immediately from joeys? The joeys I maybe getting are brother and sister, will I have to neuter them? And also when it comes to vetinary care, does any vet have the skills or does it have to be a specialist?

As soon as they can eat solids they can eat the SGS 2 :-) Another great thing about this diet is that you don't have to switch it gradually from another diet, you can just offer the SGS 2 from day 1. Yes, if your suggies are related you have to neuter the males as soon as possible to avoid inbreeding. Not every vet knows how to handle sugar gliders, but many do. If you join one of the suggie groups on Facebook you can ask for recommendations from your area.

If im feeding sugar glider sgs2 diet, i give them chiken. I blend it , puray the chicken. So 4 oz. Of chicken is 1/3 as a cup. Right?????!!!

You will need to measure that with a scale please. It's more precise. You can take a cup and put it on the scale to hold the chicken pieces so you know in the future how many cups that was.

I give them fresh food when they wake up in the evening. I like to change their food during the night at 1-2am, but that is totally not necessary. In the morning I give them snacks and put in a mix of dried stuff so that they have something during the day in case they get hungry :-) Thank you!

I add it every other day or every third day. You should ask around in the US groups on Facebook where you can buy the calcium as I live in Europe and purchase my supplements from sugarglidershop.co.uk 😊 I believe the calcium you can purchase over exoticnutrition.com is good, but it wouldn't hurt to ask for other people's opinion. I never add it to the batch, I just add it on top and mix it in before serving as it should be adjusted to their weight.

Do you just then feed them once a day and leave the food kitchens there? You don't need to feed more than one cube a day? Also in this diet, should you give them any raw fruits and vegetables or just as treats and how often? Sorry, I am just researchinh about them as much as possible before getting a pair. :)

brazilianeyes13 Raw fruits and vegetables are part of the diet :-) I like to serve them 1 cube per glider, but I follow their eating habits closely and if they leave no food on the plate, then I serve more starting the next night. But 4 cubes have been enough for the last couple months. This is not mandatory in any way but I do like to split their food into 2 and change their food sometimes around 1-3am just so that they have fresh food until they go to sleep. I like to serve their favourite fruits and vegetables just cut into small pieces as cheat meals once or twice a month, instead of their staple diet :-)

brazilianeyes13 I just let the food thaw at room temperature until it gets mushy again. I have 2 kitchens for 4 gliders and one bowl inside of each kitchen.

Yes. While raspberries have a great ca:p ratio, they contain a lot of oxalates plus they can cause diarrhea in high amounts, that is why they should be treated as "amber" :-)

Maybe look if you can find flaxseed? It is the same thing, but different name for it. But I can guarantee that you will find it under either name in pretty much any supermarket! People take them for so many different purposes :-)

Just a few issues with the information written out. #1 Do you have proof (as in verified testing from a vet/necropsy, not just hearsay) that grapes are toxic? Because I've been an owner for almost 3 years and I've read lots of stuff saying they are, but just as much saying they aren't. I have friends who have been suggie slaves for decades and say they aren't. I have fed my own gliders seedless grapes because most people will say if there's an issue with grapes, it's the seeds, not the grapes themselves. Which is true with several fruits. #2 I NEVER feed treats at night! Sugar gliders stomach's are tiny and they can fill up on junk quickly. Treats are always given during tent time, or daytime, at least 4 hours, prior dinner. Always give any treat in moderation. #3 Avocado is high in fat, but they are good fats. It's also very good for their fur, if it becomes cracked. Especially in summer time when running air conditioning all the time. As with treats, moderation is key. Otherwise great video. 😊

Those are excellent questions, Cary. Please keep in mind that I am not the inventor of this diet so I won't be able to answer them as detailed as she would, but I don't mind sharing what I do know with you :-) 1. Grapes have caused renal failure in dogs, skunks and I think parrots too. I think it is well known that grapes are not good for dogs, that is a fact and you can find a lot of info on it if you just google it. The story with the skunks is circulating in forums, but I can't say that I have read any *verified* reports from vets. So grapes are not going to instantly kill them and offering a grape every now and again will probably not do much harm, but it is best to avoid feeding them just to be on the safe side - that is why the creator of the SGS 2 advises to avoid grapes altogether. Also I am not the creator of the SGS 2, but if you contact her she might actually have some reports for you to read, if you are interested. I know she put a lot of thought into this diet so she can probably write a whole essay on why she advises people to avoid grapes, including proof :-) If you want to contact her simply join the group "Sugar Gliders UK" on Facebook and ask for her over there. 2. You are right, their stomach is tiny and you shouldn't be generous with treats at night, but eating 1-2 yogies in the evening does not spoil their appetite. But true, most of the treats should be given in the morning or during the day. 3. As you said "moderation is key" - The problem with avocado is that many people do not know when to stop feeding them :-) Also avocado (the skin, the pit and possibly the fruit) contains a toxin called persin, an antifungal that is not harmful to humans, but has caused harm in animals (2016 it has caused the death of four Aye-Ayes). Again, as of now there is *no proof* that avocado can *directly* harm a sugar glider, but I prefer to be cautious :-) And thank you! :-)

@@AwesomeSugarGliderMommy yes all of those are good points, but none of those animals have the same digestive system of sugar gliders. It's the reason, even thought they are lactose intolerant, they can handle yogurt. They are Hind gut fermenters. Like I said I and many in the US feed grapes (seedless) and avocado. I fed a couple small pieces of avocado to my breeding pairs weekly when they had joeys IP, and they are fine. I've never heard that about avocado before. ONLY that is high in fat.

The bonding process can take even years on rare occasions. Very few gliders become tame after only a week unless they have been handled a whole lot by their breeder. Just keep bonding with them, don't stress yourself or them out :-) And no, I use the *Wombaroo* High Protein Supplement. I don't know where you can purchase that in the U.S. (but you most certainly can) You should ask the people in the U.S. Suggie groups on Facebook :-)

In theory you can just separate one batch into two and add calcium to one half, leave the other one without calcium and just take out whichever you need that night. Insects are not required with the SGS 2, they are only treats - but they do love them a lot. I still suggest you prepare at least 2 different batches so that they have some variety with their food.

As much as they need. You can start with about 1 heaped tablespoon per gliders and see how that goes. If there is a lot leftover in the morning, then reduce the amount. There should always be some left over, but not too much otherwise it is a waste.

Hello! So as you all know, In case you live in a different country, that Christmas was just a few days ago! So for my Christmas, I opened a huge present and bam, it was a cage. A sugar glider cage at that. Now, I have been wanting sugar gliders ever since I saw them at the fair, if you know pocket pets which is a bad place to get sugar gliders or any other animal at that, but ever since I saw them, I have always wanted one. I didn’t research a lot, mostly cause I doubted that I was gonna get some and only researched a little. If I had known that I was getting them for Christmas, I would have researched a ton more! But, I’m getting two (a brother and a sister) next week from a family friend who raises and breeds them. So now I’m cramming in all this information in a notebook and buying things at pet stores (that are safe) and things online. If anyone can give me some tips on taking care of these little guys, that would be great! Thank you so much! And this channel is helping me out a lot so thanks for that! ^ - ^

I'm glad that you are aware that the information that is easily available is not always the best! And happy to read that you will be getting 2 from the very beginning. My heart always breaks a little bit when people tell me they are starting out with only one and will purchase the second one later. It is just so sad to keep them alone. How much vitamin do you use for each glider?

I use exactly the measurements I give in the recipe, the amount doesn't change. I feel about 1-2 heaped teaspoon(s) of mixed SGS 2 per glider.

I keep their suggie mix (pellets, cereal, dried fruits and flowers...) in during the day, but will take it out in the evening to make sure they eat their staple and not just their snacks :-)

This is their staple diet, you don't have to (and should not) add anything to it since it has all the vitamins and nutrients they need.

@@imthickerthanasnicker1122 No, you don't. I do like to give them the option though so during the day there is a dry food mix in their cage and that includes high quality suggie pellets. But the SGS 2 is a complete diet, pellets and insects are considered treats and are not necessary.

Can't help you with that because it depends on the brand you are using. I use ZolCal and add 0,1ml per 100g sugar glider weight - every 2nd day :-)

This wont make my gliders give off an strong smell would they?

No, a good staple diet never causes strong smells. On the contrary, they smell much better when kept on a healthy staple diet, like the SGS 2. Their bad smell is mostly caused by a bad diet or too much protein (too many eggs or insects) and, of course, intact (unneutered) male sugar gliders generally have a very strong smell. As soon as an intact male has been neutered the smell starts to fade away. 2-6 weeks after a neuter their smell becomes barely noticeable.

Any other fruit from the green 1 category so papaya, blackberries, apple with the skin, pear will all do the trick 😊

Thank you. I made them a mix with Butternut squash, sweet potato, carrot, pear, melon, apple, golden flaxseed, yogurt, oatmeal, HPW, bee pollen, egg, and acacia gum. Is this good? I can't find Zolcal-D liquid vitamins in US here. What do i use instead?

I have Zolcal D (liquid) and I add it to their food just before serving. I supplement with calcium 2-3 times a week.

How much do you add per serving of food? I have two gliders. I ordered that exact calcium from the U.K. I don't have it yet but any day! Thanks for your videos I've watched them all like ten times you helped me so much!

You start with 1 cube per glider. If they eat it all, then you add more the next day. There should always be a little bit left over in their bowls. Each glider has an individual appetite. While Dobby was still alive, I always served 5 cubes for the 4 of them. Now they get 3 cubes in total, because they don't eat as much.

You shouldn't. The diet is meant to be low sugar because they tend to get overweight easily and also often have problems with their teeth because of the amount of sugar. I would personally recommend honey as a treat only, not as a part of their staple diet.

Thank you for caring so much that you feel compelled to let me know. Don't worry though, I would never put them in danger by cooking their food in something that would hurt them. Tap water is perfectly healthy in my area and we all drink it all the time.
