Turns out Jordan Peterson was picking his words carefully long before the media was trying to discredit him

The best thing I ever heard from a psychiatrist/psychologist was: “It’s not paranoia if they really are all out to get you.” I had been downplaying a situation I was in, and I had been blaming myself for a situation, but he saw through my self-blame and set me straight. It was like being let out of a cage of self hate.

"It's happy hour, Jordan....would you like to buy this toaster for 20 bucks?" "Go clean your room, sunshine."

Spot on. In my line of work I deal with unpredictable and often intoxicated and violent people. And as a rule early on I learned to never ever lie. Even if it would make the job easier in the short term. There is something in the truth, or being known as a truth speaker that helps enormously. Peterson is really great.

This man has lived in the gap between the stimulus and response on many occasions. A genuine, well schooled multi faceted human being. Thanks again Ironwill

I was once in a somewhat similar situation involving organized crime, big muscular sociopaths, big angry dogs alcohol, probably drugs and and a very agitated guy at my door telling me to go to this location and deliver this person a message etc. At 1am as I was just going to sleep and watching my small children sleep, this was the last thing I could have expected. I calmly but firmly explained that my principle it's to never get involved in other people's affairs and that as I have a family, I can't have any part in their drug/blood debts and that I sincerely hope they get their things working as I understood the situation was difficult for everybody involved. We moved the hell away from there pretty soon after. But yeah, that guy was just looking to catch me with the wrong attitude. So honesty and firmness, but also good respectful attitude will save your arse.

one thing id add to the good drs words is i believe his 'rough' friend will have also respected the ability to address the issue(stand up for oneself so to speak, facing fear) firmly, acutely, and direct without the need to be over critical or over judgmental, a scary situation, but scary situations need addressed, and those used to more chaos in their lives often respect that approach far more than any mollycoddling, or complex, sophisticated explanation

But I could never have expressed what I was trying to do so perfectly. This man uses his vocabulary so well. I know all those words (we all do) and I knew I was trying to live in a way that my grandfather, who was a deacon of his methodist chapel for over 60 years would never be ashamed but hopefully would be proud to say "That is my grandson" He was such a wonderful man and I knew I was very lucky to have such a person to look up to in my life. As I said "I know all those fairly simple words" but I could never have constructed that sentence so perfectly. Thank you to Mr Peterson and also to the person who uploaded this clip.

Ha! Try firing one! I was a QC manager in a mfg Co. My boss told me, around 8 AM, to fire this guy at the end of the day, and he handed me an envelope with his last checks. ...oh joy I went back to QC and told him to come outside and that I need to talk to him. There we were, alone... Out of screaming distance... I stood there and I told him what was up. That he'd missed too much work and I had no choice. That the owner had said l was to let him go at the end of the day but that I thought that was a chickenshit thing to do, so I was paying him for the day. He was looking at me like I was lunch the whole time... He looked away for a sec, nodded, looked back at me, and told me he respected that I had taken him out alone to do this. That it took balls. He shook my hand, jumped on his Harley and left. I was more scared than I've ever been, walking out that door. But I was straight up with him. So I got to walk back inside, with an unbroken nose! I don't know if honesty is always the smarter move with stuff like that. Each scenario is different. But generally yeah. When shit gets sketchy? Make sure you're not!

He was probably just a rough, drunk, quebec biker. There are tons of them, and a lot of them like to give the impression that they are or were 81. The old guy drove a honda, it doesn't mean the prof is lying, it just means that the prof didn't really know that the guy was or wasn't hells at one time. Regardless, he was somewhat intimidating and what are you gonna say to the guy if you aren't comfortable with your own ability to throw a punch ? "Hey man, you're bullshitting, you're not a hells angel" ! Wake up internet trolls who pretend to know everything, as far as I am concerned, this is a good talk by the prof.

Interesting story and told with great humour. One point that I heard somebody once say, 'Always try to tell the truth, that way you never have to remember what you have said.'

Jordan Peterson is a giant of a human. A true sage. So brilliant, so amazing.

I had 2 psycho parents and they lied all the time and hated liars and were intolerant to them in any capacity. If you said you ate a couple couple cookies when actually you a few cookies... you will then have a enemy until properly reconciled. Mom attempted murder on at least two people. One shot multi times one survived brutal knife attack. Dad was just abusive to anyone he could get away with it. Put guns in people's faces for gun and then act like it was a accident. There allot more to tell... My point is Jordan is amazingly on point. They look for lies and they look for indignation dispite pouring on others almost continuously.

I have never seen a man more careful of every word he says and more painfully honest with people.

Jordan Peterson is not only incredibly intelligent but such a genuine person. While he might disagree with your opinion he does so without any cynicism which is a rare talent. He is a pleasure to listen too in this day and age.

Not to nitpick, but either he wasn’t really a Hells Angel, or it wasn’t a “Honda 750.” Hells Angels members have to have an American-made motorcycle of at least 1,000 ccs. Great story, though!

Professor Peterson, you are dead on about telling the truth to unpredictable people. I have been following the same course of action, so to speak, not because I read about it somewhere, but because when I looked at this "unpredictable person", I physically realized that keeping honest, truthful relationship will only better me and perhaps even save me one day wen I would need this person's help. Well done, professor, well done indeed.

I can see how your bravery propelled you to the right places. Sometimes I wonder about the value of such endeavors, and this summarizes it very well for me. I was a toaster buyer at 3 am during certain times in my life.

I grew up on the wrong side of the tracks in San Bernardino, CA in 1960's and 70's where the Hells Angels motorcycle club originally began. In my early teens I used to hang out and drink beer with a group of hippies who lived in an old farm house nearby and used to get their marijuana from the Hells Angels. I was often there when the Hells Angels came to call. So I know from personal experience who the Hells Angels were and their code was pretty simple. Those who treat you well you treat better, those who treat you bad you treat worse. The guy in this story may have rode a bike and been a violent alcoholic but I guarantee you he wasn't a Hells Angel, no real Hells Angel would be caught dead riding a Honda 750! If Jorden Perterson had truly ever met a real Hells Angel he would know that. Instead he appears to be shamefully exploiting the Hells Angels name and reputation as click bait.

Interesting story, and Dr. Peterson's advice on being honest, yet carefully so, will earn some respect from those who have already established a relationship with you in some form. For those with whom you don't have this relationship, I have found that answering the door with my Sig Sauer P 229 in hand to be a real advantage.

I understand exactly what he is talking about as a passive person I have run into this situation time and time again and with practice you Learn to be assertive and what not to say.. Because these people do have a hair pin trigger that and they only know how to establish a position through violence and intimidation.. Violence has always given them quick results with very little opposition.. So they apply that strategy to every situation

I'd bet that the guy could have been an Hells Angel...or maybe on a 750 Honda...but he was no Hells Angel on a 750 Honda. Course, maybe the good Mr. Peterson doesn't know a Honda from a Harley....who knows?

Strange enough, I've meet some of the people he's talking about here and to me they have always been really friendly. Now, I have to say that I grew up in a small town where crime was like non existant and I was pretty much like a nerd, then I got to know those people trough a friend who all lived in the larger city area down town to speak so. I guess what really did the trick is that I was never judgemental, if they used drugs, beating other people or if they have been downright criminals. I was offered drugs sometimes, but I always declined saying that I believe they are harmfull, and I got respect for that. I guess you simply have to be genuine. Just as Jordan says, don't give people bullshit and they won't hit you.

I'll buy he was in the biker community, and very likely 1%, but not an Angel. I say this because I don't know a single one that would ever ride a honda.

Hells Angels (and bikers in general) are all about demanding respect, by being honest and standing your ground you earned his.

I grew up with a "rough" father. And believe you me, choosing your words carefully is not only a matter of honor, but of survival. If they sense weakness, hostility, or falseness it WILL put them into a rage. The one and only time I really stood up to my father, (over him lying about my *ahem* dating behavior. I will not tolerate that.) he disowned me. I have not spoken to him since. I may be overly agreeable, conscientious to a sincere fault at times, but one thing I got from my father is I hate liars and trouble makers. Life has been breathable since he disowned me. And btw peeps, do not build these types up in your mind as hero's. You have no idea just how, rough, they can really be until it is too late.
