@@Lo-tf6qt not really. Vendel is the name of a hustorical period in scandinavia between the bronze age and the viking age. Vendel period helmets are very similar but it's a typical viking age helmet. I agree both vendel and viking helmets look savage with mail. Especially when the mail covers the whole face. The less you look like a human the more frightening you are. Same with corinthian, samurai or crusader helmets.

(The wife and children) Rather than the super flashy, seizure inducing ten second ads we have now. Although I do like the hard bass sometime.

The main character is an expensive actor with an expensive face. The troops are cheap extras. Of course they can cover their faces with a helmet. Todd Cutler (of Todd's Workshop) explains a lot of reasons that movies are fake in the same ways in at least one of his videos. -PS: I was lost in Philmont and somehow wound up at the Aztec Mine (old, mined out gold mine) before my crew. I'd hate to think of what would have happened if I went in early, as I hit my head [hard] on the ceiling within seconds of going in (and putting on my brain bucket). I suspect that 14 year old me wouldn't bother with the helmet.

Not just medieval but also a lot of war movies set in the current or last century which personally annoys me more as headgear in general is part of any modern uniform although it's understandable that from a story-telling viewpoint characters are easier to tell apart when they don't all wear the same helmets.

@@TheSuspectOnFoot The problem with the "story-telling" of characters needing to show their face is that not only is there some helmet types that do not obstruct the face too much to show emotion but you can still show off a character's emotions if the actor's body language alone can suffice. Most of the time it's just the Actor's ego to show off their face more than they need to.

I had a class mate who luckily wore a helmet when we (my class and I) one afternoon rode our bmx bikes after school on the local bmx track. He had the most awful crash I have ever been a witness to. We had to call the ambulance and everything. The doctor told his parents that the helmet saved his life as it was literily broken in half. He doesn't remember his crash but he made a full recovery. The thing with helmets is that you don't need them until you REALLY need one. Which is the reason why it's so important to always wear one!

I didnt wore a helmet in 6th grade, when riding downhill from school. It was silly i thought. My smart front wheel tire lock loosened and ejected my wheel from the front fork. I took some serious damage on skin and pride. Doctors told i was pretty lucky. No matter how silly i look. Helmet is a go to. Wont risk my life again.🙌

Except that big-ass horse, sadly. I mean, it's a fine, beautiful horse - but early Medieval horses in Scandinavia were on the small-ish side.

It’s an Ad for helmets which was made by (directly translated) “Council for Safe Traffic”, here in Denmark, which is a private organisation run by public authorities. Not many people in Denmark wear helmets. There are no laws against it, so thats why the Ad.

Injuries didn't increase, "Casualties" increased. Injured but alive was marked as a casualty back then. Injured and dead was just dead. I'm not meaning to be pedantic as you have an excuse, modern person, for getting the terms a bit wrong. The fact the High Command made the same error and started to push for removal of helmets at first, not so much :P

Thanks for your comment, I very much agree. And this ad make me rpoud of my country. About the time of your comment, another commentor was impressed by the 11.000 "likes" already. Now it's at 190.000+ likes. But for me this ad worked. 2 years before, my firend had a bicycle accident and, not wearing helmet, hurt his head and completely lost any short term memory ever since. That didn't make me wear bicycle helmet. But then a year ago - *this ad* did.

For everyone else reading this, keep in mind, these ads were made for the cinema, hence the larger production funds and length of it.

More over, the Irish weren't targeted the same as the English coast and if anything, integrated with the Vikings more and earlier than the main-land counterparts. What most people of as England vs Vikings was more like.. sporadic raids against churches (because they had the money) with the occasional large battle. When it came to large battles it was more often a draw but enough Danes settled onto the Island that they stopped raiding it.. because they lived there now and started fighting against their own, which inevitably led to the stopping of it. The Danes/Vikings were just as much colonizers and traders as they were raiders and warriors.

Of course the Vikings had a civilisation, inkean they had a huge slave trade you can't have that without one, but to say the people who turned up to steal and pillage and takes slaves were "warriors" is a bit of a stretch. They wore as much armour as they could and mainly fought farmers, and when tested by the local warriors mostly failed.

The other helmet is real as well, it is the Gjermundbu helmet - among one of only a very few viking made helmets still in existence and to my knowledge its the only intact viking helmet ever to be found in Scandinavia.

If you haven't yet, try watching Norsemen, it's really similar and hilarious. It was made in Norway and they filmed everything twice, once in Norwegian and then in English. There's sadly only 3 season to enjoy.

The message behind it is what makes it brilliant though, it's both a helmet ad and also a subtle commentary at movie/video game characters' tendency to not wear helmets because they look more heroic (which is as daft as going into battle shirtless because one doesn't look nice in armour).

I used to love Game of Thrones for that exact same reason. Vikings just never did anything really interesting. I watched 3 or 4 seasons of it a few years ago and nothing made a memorable impression. The most memorable thing about the show is that it just looks like biker gangs minus firearms.
