Video notes: - Build article with lots of details and why I did this or that: jayscustomcreations.com/2018/02/a-hickory-woodworking-workbench/ - Yes, there is a misspelled word in the beginning. I've always sucked at spelling and there is no spell check in Premiere Pro. Oh, well....whatcha think of the workbench? - A leg vise and dog holes will be added. - I wanted to use clear Danish oil for the finish but didn't have any on hand like I thought I did. I just used mineral oil to make the grain pop. - The completed bench has a volume of about 70 board feet according to SketchUp. I'd say I had about 30% waste cutting around big knots and cracks. - A workbench is made to be used. I don't care if it's ugly. The half lap joints naturally prevent racking. Add glue to the joint and use the screws to act as clamps while the glue dries. When the joint is closed and the glue is dried, why even take the time to remove the screws and add dowels? Then it is purely cosmetic reasons. If that were the case I'd build it out of curly maple and sapele with string inlay. I'd rather build the bench and use it to make nice stuff. I'm not saying I'd never build a nice, pretty workbench but that's not my goal here. - Have a great day!

Jay Bates - Woodworking Videos I was going to ask what type of finish you used, because it looked like baby oil! Glad I took the liberty to read your comment! Even though it’s built to be used and you went for the “less than aesthetic” look, it still looks great. 👍🏼

Unbelievably sharp work! It's so cool as I am currently making a workbench too and it's very inspiring to see this video. I love how you matched the light/dark grain on the top, the progression in nice and those mortices are perfect. Always a pleasure to watch your videos and with this newer camera, the quality is amazing and I like your color grading as well. OH and also loved the graphics for the layout for the legs aaaahhh awesome :D

Such solid work. As a renter, I couldn't imagine having a workbench that I couldn't take apart (a la Matthias' workbench: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-M_xJD_aylYw.html ), but I imagine there's nothing like working on a surface so solid and bullet-proof.

Nice job getting most of the pale bits of hickory in the center of the top. Nice "racing stripe" when it is done. Love the head scratching bit also there as you're trying to get it on the outfeed table. HEAVY!

I have read several articles on working with Hickory. About 2/3 of those guys say Hickory is very difficult to work with, and they probably won't do it again. They also emphasized the importance of having sharp tools. You did not mention any of these points in your work bench build. Would you elaborate on your experience in working with Hickory? Also, do you have helical heads with carbide inserts in your planer and jointer ? How much do you remove from the wood with each pass on your planer and jointer? One last question please concerns the weight of the wood. I am 71 years old and not as strong as a young man, so I am wondering about that aspect. Thanks a bunch for any advice you can give me. @nevermindthebull0cks
@nevermindthebull0cks 6 лет назад
I put a Byrd Shellix head in my Dewalt planer. It's a lot better...........BUT that money would have been better spent saving towards a bigger planer. It's crazy how fast a planer and jointer will fill the dust collector up. Bench looks nice, I figured you would have pinned it instead of screws. You should have left the legs proud through the top for all the ocd people:)

Is that rough cut Hickory? I need a new Roubo and built my last one out of pine 2x4. It was good but had to get rid of it when we moved. I can get rough cut Hickory here in Texas relatively cheep and want a workbench that lasts. Did you wear out your 2x6 one you built or just wanted to "upgrade"?

Jay, I like your design, not complicated and well done. I only question why you thought screws were needed on the glued and mortised stretcher joints. Glue and clamps would have been more than enough with all that glue surface and you could have preserved the beautiful face of the hickory.

Was going to say that at about 2:00min "blister" turned up, but he was there for some of the heavier work, so i couldn't ?? Great bench and very well built, a thing of beauty and a joy forever, whether you decide to keep or sell. As an Australian i don't get to see Hickory and the problems associated with it, if there are any, but you seem to have mastered it. I must say it looks far too nice to go 'hammering on', but it looks very sturdy, so just need to await the vise installs.

Nicely done, and I couldn’t give a rip that you used screws to clamp the half lap joints and didn’t replace them with dowels later on. There is nothing wrong with the screws being left there, a bench is best used to make beautiful things, not be the beautiful thing.

How long do these kind of workbenches last? Like doesn't wood warp overtime? I can imagine gluing a bunch of them together would amplify that problem.
@JayBates
@JayBates 6 лет назад
Gluing them together reduces warping compared to a similar sized slab. Workbenches like these will last generations. Regardless, wood does move and warp slightly. Just plane if flat. After a few times planing it the wood will reach equilibrium and not move much.
