Dude you're killing me. Total flashback.. Going thru these videos. Lmao. My first "big hit" was 87 Topps mcgwire. I was all about the A's and Bash Brothers era. Thanks again sir
Fascinating. For just little pieces of cardboard it blows me away the value of some of this cardboard. I also was drawn into collecting more than anything by Mark McGwire and I also went to A's games as a youngster starting in 1990. We collected baseball and football cards mainly in my family and same for many friends. As these were the sports we grew up watching. I collected McGwire cards more than anything else and have over 300 different McGwire cards. I'll never forget one birthday in 7th grade a few of my friends pitched in together and bought me the McGwire 85 Topps rookie for I think $15 at the time. That was alot of money in 1995. And that Jerry Rice card showed in this video brings back alot of memories. We also loved to try to complete entire sets of cards. I ended up giving away a bunch of almost completed wax pack era sets after moving around so many times and just got sick of carrying around these binders full of incomplete sets. I took the star cards out beforehand of course. And gave away a lot of commons in that time as well.
I think everyone has a story similar to this one, only on different levels of value. Still, I enjoy hearing them all, thanks for changing it up Chris! Looking forward to more videos.
I'm so glad you kept this forward thinking. You can't change the past and we all have deals we'd love to change or do over. Great story. Great advice. Thanks Chris!
Great story. One thing I always hear when high rollers talk about their sports card investment story, it always ends with “I’m going to keep a few for my personal collection”. Goes to show that the best investors with a business mindset are collectors at heart.
Some great advice and amazing backstory. I'm glad Jason reached out and shared his story. Similar to both of you, I grew up in the junk wax era but faded out in the mid 2000s. I started playing poker for a living in 2017, and with more free time on my hands, slowly started getting back into the hobby. I completely agree you can't predict the future or what the market will do in the long run. When I was prepping and studying to quit my full-time job to peruse poker as a career, I read a quote in a poker mental game book that I not only applied to poker but to investing in sports cards, along with many other things in life: "Don't worry about making money. Worry about making the correct decisions and let the money take care of itself" - The Poker Mindset
Ive played my share of poker (would have loved to try making a living at it!) and I know that motto well... you're spot on and its a great motto for cards as well.
Great story! Thanks Jason for sharing...and thanks Chris for putting this together you do such a excellent job on these video's. As a side note I want to share. Years ago I got back into collecting cards. I talked to the owner of the only local card shop. He told me don't collect the high grade cards, but he said to focus on mid grade cards so you could get a bigger collection. Anyway, I got the autographed rookie card bug and that is the way I went!!
Appreciate you sharing. The high end stuff obviously gets the headlines but in a sense he is right... if you are a collector you can afford way more that way.
Thanks for some of the best sports collecting stories on RU-vid. You're knowledge within the hobby and your willingness and ability to share it with the rest of us is envaluible!
I just started listening to podcasts and for yours, I muted out the television in the background. Quite enjoyed, liked how you gave actual prices while showing actual cards. I just joined CardLadder which led me to look card podcasts. Over a decade ago I bought a PSA 9 Jordan rookie, PSA 9 Gretzky rookie, and the 80 Topps Magic, Bird rookie, again in a PSA 9 and I still have them. Enjoyed your video!
Really appreciate that and welcome to the channel! Well done on some of those long term holds, the Jordan, Gretzky, and Bird/Magic were incredible investments!
Great story a real-life lesson I think many people will learn from this. great content thank you for spotlighting this person god bless you both happy collecting.
Tons of great advice in the story. Thanks for sharing. Very sobering and inspiring to know that there’s still opportunity when it seems like everything is overpriced and knowing that there’s still ways to find deals even if they are longer-term holds.
Great video Chris! love this type of content and a lot of good points made about profiting and moving on as hindsight can weigh you down in this hobby, have a great week!
Great story Jason thank you for sharing and thanks Chris it all shows us do what you love and love what you do and things usually works for the good do the work the $$will follow!
It’s always good to listen to stories like these and if we had a penny for every time we heard, “if only we had a time machine!” We’d be millionaires! LOL
Another great story about collecting cards & I hope more followers reach out to you with their experiences. Living in San Diego, I am a huge Charger fan too. I've been on the Bolts bandwagon since 1971 & will definitely invest some money on a few Justin Herbert cards in the next few years. Thanks for the tip & I'd appreciate any more you might have.
Great video! Started an investment firm in 2010 and started picking up cards over the past few years? Damn, Jason struck gold on two absolutely full on raging bull markets, and on the card front was smart enough to realize who he should be buying (QBs, rookies, champions), and realized the cards were undervalued and diamond handed them to the top (?) of the market. Definitely luck involved (there always is), but lots of skill, too - hat's off!
Thank man I appreciate you taking the time to make these videos. These stories are just great, wish to see more of your personal dealing experiences on the future!
Great story. I have a very similar one about Tom Brady rookie cards. I was buying them up like crazy the year before he beat Seattle. I found that they were very cheap and had great growth but, also I live in MA and have been a life long Pats fan. The two biggest gains of the bunch were the 2000 Bowman Chrome Refractor which I paid $464 for and the 2000 Bowman Gold #/99 which I paid $500 for and also included the Private Stock Gold. Well I sent off the refractor and it came back a BGS 8.5. So, between the 2 Brady's I have nearly six figures in value on a $1,300 investment including grading fees. Here's hoping he wins #8 this year. GOAT
I’m not a quick flipper. I’m a collector and long term investor. I really wish I jumped back into the hobby prior 2020. I really like hearing and seeing stories like this.
@@collectorinvestordealer No Ripkens, yet! Looking through early '80s Fleer and Donruss, too. Tough to find well-centered, fairly crisp corners and clean edges. Sleeving the good ones, chucking the bad ones. Not too worried about crumbs!
Gr8 story Chris.. I love these kinds of video's.. Love to hear stories about people and their personal journey in the hobby.. Sounds like he's certainly made a nice fortune off his investment's and continued to do.. Stay safe man..👍💕🔥⚾😷
Great story. Yeah if he had never reinvested the profit from the cards he sold in 2016 it would be tragic considering the value now but he did it right, reinvested and now look at what he has.
I've been investing in football myself. I've come to realize my disdain for the NBA was going to be a problem. The only problem I face now is my affinity invest in defensive ends & safeties. 🤣 I can't help myself, I played college these are the positions that win football games.
The card that got me going was the 1981 Topps Fernando Valenzuela. Me and my dad bought boxes and boxes from the corner store for years. Spent my yard money on an Al Kaline rookie because it was his favorite growing up. Still have all my cards thank goodness.
Great concept for video Chris - enjoyed it. Kudos to Jason for sharing his story and offering solid advice. Good for him - God bless. Watching prices of many cards skyrocket I’m curious who is holding some these golden tickets. Seeing this type of video helps fill out picture of current card boom. Thanks.
My story is almost the same as his but he is a baller so has bangers. Collected in the late 80’s early 90’s. Got back in to the hobby when lebron got into the league. Pulle a bunch of Lebron rookies. Stop buying cards in 05. Got back into the hobby in 2017. That year I would find so much stuff, but I didn’t open it. I just held on to it. I have 2 2018-2019 fast break boxes that I got for 80 bucks each. Now they are selling for at least 4K each. I have 3 Luka Prizm rcs I pulled one myself and bought the 2 other. I bought one for 9 bucks and the other for 17 bucks. I have so much unopened boxes that are selling for crazy prices. Haven’t sold anything yet. Great story, great video👍
