Throughout history one thing has had more impact on women’s lives than almost anything else - giving birth to children. In this three part series we will explore various aspects of this paramount and awe-inspiring process and how it has changed across cultures and through time. From how we think about conception and fertility to some rather kooky pregnancy tests; from the day to day realities of pregnancy and how pregnant women were seen by their communities to the changing medical practices surrounding that most amazing dangerous moment in women’s lives, childbirth.

@@TheAgeofFabulous , just because you saw something on a show doesn't mean it's true. I live and do social work in one of New York's largest Hasidic centers. I hear a comical amount of sex questions from Hasidic people and hear about their sex lives in the process. Their wedding nights can be awkward because they are inexperienced, fast on wedding days, and have wedding receptions that last ten hours or so. But they make love naked, kiss and touch, and enjoy sex as much as other people. It's completely divorced from affection though, so they'll keep having enjoyable sex even if their marriage is otherwise breaking down. The exceptions are the Gur and Skver sects that have draconian rules that the others find ridiculous.

What?? Did I miss the memo?? Today women are pressured to produce a child in first year of marriage?? From what I have seen many couples don't bother to GET married even AFTER the first or second child is born or at all. Worse still, a woman has two or more children by different fathers while not being married to any of them. The only time I hear of urgency to conceive so soon after marriage is when the woman has postponed marriage until her late thirties, when true, that clock is ticking.

For many many generations, it was thought of as a sin to do "it" for ANY reason other than to quickly get it over with so that you can have children. I've also heard that men and women would get executed if they say or show that they enjoyed doing the act in general from pleasure or happiness instead of just for a child. So basically the idea of a super romantic and loving act would've gotten you dead.

Sex outside the marriage was considered a sin. Sex inside the marriage was considered good and necessary (the marriage wasn't considered valid without consummation) and both spouses had to offer it up to one another. For example, crusaders had to get explicit consent from their wives to leave for Outremer, because it could otherwise be seen as witholding sexual relations that their wives should demand. Idk I expected something more academically confirmed from this video.

@Moonlitwatersofaqua
@Moonlitwatersofaqua 4 года назад
No shes not. But she is an outlet for Christians to embrace femininity in their religion. Jesus is a man, God is allegedly a man, and the holy spirit is a non entity. There is no avenue to explore the female experience through this so saints and other historical women in the bible are used to fulfill those needs. Today we have science to fulfill such needs but in the past religion was a very comforting thing for people trying to understand something there wasn't a lot of knowledge about. Thus religions accommodated that. (and praying to a goddess or saint seems like a way less destructive form of inducing fertility than shoving honey up your vagina) There is also just this attractive appeal to polytheism where there are multiple gods to assist you with your life. Catholic Saints accomplish that desire without being blasphemous in the eyes of monotheistic obsessed Christians. Saints are not used in many protestant faiths because of the blasphemy accusations. I'm an agnostic so I really don't care about the debate about how one should worship their god. I don't think monotheism, monolateral monotheism, faux monotheism, or polytheism are inherently better than one another. I just hope this is informative.

It kinda is, when a man ejaculates in a women’s vagina it is the women’s fault as she is unsuccessful to fully produce the egg. It’s no ones fault but if it was anyone’s the only logical one is the women. Also women think “sexism” so differently these days. Men have way more problems than women like more deaths on the job, more likely to have their kids taken by the women after a divorce, being more likely to harsher jail penalties, I can go on and on.

Fun fact: Lindsay showed the Arnolfini portrait (of the Renaissance woman in the green dress) at 1:00 and 8:00, but the portrait does not actually depict a pregnant woman. It depicts a presumable virgin at her wedding. In the late 15th Century, gathering fabric at the front of the dress to create a pregnancy-like bump was actually the fashion. There is even some speculation that thanks to this fashion, many women were able to conceal pregnancy out of wedlock.

1 in 3 women used to die at childbirth in the Middle Ages ( this is not the mother’s age, for those young men reading this w/little education.) . Women used to write their wills and arrange their funerals before giving birth. The miracle was that the baby and / or the mother survived. This needs to be taught in schools. A lot of men grow up with a very immature idea about women and about pregnancy. The US now has the highest birth death of all developed countries and others undeveloped.

So, important to point out: Mary was not seen as a goddess. Mary is the mother of God but that does not make her God. People would ask her intersession for things but not praying to her as one prays to God. It's more like asking ones mom to ask their dad for a thing in place. Dad will listen to Mom pretty solidly and, at the same time and especially in this case, mom and dad have pretty unified wills. This is a very important distinction. Mary is not God. She would be the LAST person to claim that. She is, however, beloved by God and is the mediatrix of grace. Totally different thing.

There is another reason many women did not know they were pregnant or when they conceived. Menarche occurs when a woman's body is heavy enough. Food was scarce. Most women didn't start menstruating until 15 or later. Between that, pregnancy, and breast-feeding, women rarely menstruated monthly much less yearly. Not having a period did not indicate pregnancy as it often does today minus hormonal issues like PCOS where a woman does not menstruate regularly nor produce eggs.
