That's why I love the term "essentialism" instead of minimalism - all these things are essential to YOUR lifestyle! What is essential is so unique to each of us 💛

I was going to suggest a second fridge. I put ours in laundry room but I know you don’t have that option. For 15 years I had a second fridge in our garage; it worked well and when we moved, we gave the fridge away. They come in handy during the holidays or big family gatherings, even a great place for the kids to grab a popsicle and the mess stays outside.

Your farm organization makes me giggle. Growing up, I lived on a small farm. It was definitely a working farm, always had something going, things around, it looked disorganized but there was a method to the madness. Whenever company was coming, my mom would take half a day and tidy up. She would tell us "Make sure you can read all the labels on the jars (we had open shelving in the pantry and kitchen.), all clothes were finally hung or folded, making sure the hangers were all going the same direction and everything was wiped down and dusted. Always new towels, in the kitchen and guest bath and we would dust and vacuum. And lastly, she would boil a pot of water with cinnamon, nutmeg and apples to make the house smell good. Always opened the windows if we could. Finally, the house and driveway would be hosed down. LOL She felt this was enough to make the house look tidy.

Keeping a working kitchen clean, tidy and organized is a challenge when you do so many things from scratch. I invested in half and gallon size jars for each item I want to store and added 6 extra jars of each size to have in spare. I labeled them to make sure I don't use them for anything else that way I'm able to keep my pantry in check. Everyone knows where everything goes so they can put it back in place. Clear jars allow me to keep track on what I'm short on.

I cannot express how much joy it brings me to see your cheese wheels aging. I watched a video last month of yours from a while ago and you mentioned not caring as much about making cheese at the time because it wasn’t a priority and I remember thinking it won’t be long until that’s the next skill under your belt. Sure enough, soon after I saw the podcast where you dove into cheese making. Look at you go!! It is so inspiring as a mother who also doesn’t like to follow 20 steps and extensive rules. I need my kitchen to be practical and functional - it’s a workshop. I don’t have time for the mental clutter of drawn out recipes that eat my time. I love seeing you pursue a homesteading life that is practical and beautiful at the same time. As you accumulate a few more necessary essentials in your home you maintain the clutter-free attitude and mindset and that’s where real minimalism is rooted anyways.

Essentialist...I like that. It's more practical than minimalist, too. We're adding a hanging pot rack for 2 reasons, no fumbling down in cupboards for pans, but also to open up more dry and home canning goods storage space in those cupboards. The counter has a few clean bottles in a corner ready for filling - sometimes that takes a few days, but the kitchen is a live lab, more about essential function, not empty spaces. Minimalism works better for entry ways, living rooms, bedrooms and work zones to prevent cluttered living.

Thank you for all your hard work with being a mom, having a homestead, AND being a RU-vidr! God bless you and your family! Also, I had an idea come to mind while watching. you should try to figure out how to use more vertical space instead of horizontal. For example in your pantry, to age more cheese you can do something like shoe or plate wire racks (thrift them;) to get in more cheese but use less counter space. Or in the fridge, stack all 6 rounds of cheese a top of each other in the back of the fridge. Just an idea I had!

Our Azure Standard drop amazes me. Our April drop emptied the whole truck. Folks were loading UHauls. At least there was not a foot of fresh & still falling snow like Jan/Feb/March. I love their grains, red cacao, & bulk honey (+ I roast my own coffee). The only store bought flour is King Arthur to maintain my starter. I grind (Mockmill Pro 200) everything else. I even nixtamalize my own corn. Try making syrniki with your fresh milk. A 50/50 baking soda & Jiffy Honey cornbread mix will take care of the mice etc w/o harm to kids or pets. What amazes me most is your clan. Just simply amazing. Lottsa kids, a homestead with all the jobs that go with it, homeschooling, and despite the traffic, a simply amazing home & hearth.

I saw in your pantry that you have some corn meal. Do you ever make cornbread? Everyone LOVES my cornbread. Tips for making cornbread: I use self-rising corn meal, 2 eggs, & buttermilk for the batter. It should be about the consistency of pancake batter. While you are stirring up the batter heat about ½ cup bacon grease in your iron skillet on top of the stove. Pour most of the hot grease into your batter and stir quickly then pour ½ the batter into the hot skillet. Quickly put a handful of grated cheddar cheese on top then pour the rest of the batter over the cheese and immediately put it in the oven which is preheated to 375 degrees. When it is brown on top flip it out onto a plate and sprinkle with a little salt and onion powder. YUM YUM.

One way to save space in your fridge is to find a place for hanging baskets in your kitchen to hold onions and potatoes which some would say "shouldn't" be stored in the fridge anyway. This small change will give you more space in your drawers for other items. I am sure you use potatoes and onions fast enough that you don't need tomorrow about them going bad in those baskets.

I started doing this years ago because we live about 20 minutes outside of town and I hate running out of stuff. As my family has grown, I’ve found it so helpful. I store multiple kinds of rice, wheat berries, einkorn berries, lots of dry beans, sucanat, oatmeal. This way I can order 25-50 lb bags from Azure and I’m always stocked up.

I'm 70 ...Ive always lived with my hubby on 12 acres (48 years) I did the whole "homestead" thing like you & I loved baking sour dough, bread baking and all the rest but...the farm animals & the upkeep for them ...(maybe chickens are fine... with the price of eggs!) But this is going to EXHAUST you over time. I'd put the time into spending much more quality time (hear me out) with your children. Much more TIME with them. The time you spend tending to the farm animals won't stay with them once they are adults (& and you an your hubby spend SO MANY HOURS on those animals!) I wish I had bought organic everything and saved the tens of thousands of hours I spent milking etc etc etc You'll never get those hours back. Interesting for a while... but nothing that will form them as adults.. Just my opinion. I've done it. Kind regards, Lisa

A great way to use all those eggs is to make Spanish recipes! I lived in Spain for 3 years. They put eggs on top of everything. I ordered a steak dinner and it came with a fried egg on top of the steak. Two of my favorite recipes with eggs are sheshado (I don't know how to spell it). It is a pot of fresh english peas seasoned with olive oil, minced garlic & onion and turmeric with eggs poached on top. The other recipe is tomata frita . . . I won a cooking contest on PBS with that recipe. It is stewed tomatoes seasoned with garlic & onion sauted in olive oil then add strips of battered fried chicken and poach eggs on top. YUM YUM

2 Washing machines + 2 Refrigerators + 2 Freezers are an absolute must with a large family. They help make your busy life so much more easily organised. Don’t think about it, now is the time to get them. Your future self will thank you 🙂🥛🥚🧀🧈🥩🍗

You have a beautiful kitchen with, what looks like, lots of storage. It takes a lot to feed a large family for sure!! I always enjoy your videos! How are you coming along with the curtains? I know they are going to look great.

I was impressed that your husband removed his hat before he prayed because of what apostle Paul said in 1 Corinthians 11:4.
