A horrible start to Spring Lambing 2024. ...but are we FINALLY starting to turn around? Vlog 776

Just when I'm about to wave the white flag on spring lambing 2024... (that officially hasn't even supposed to start yet) are some good things beginning to happen??
Our pregnancy toxemia ewes have now all lambed, with terrible outcomes for the ewes.
Trying hard to keep lambs alive, as they continue to come out cold and weak.
So many multiples in this group, and now I'm fearing what's ahead of us!

@drddianesbryant
@drddianesbryant 4 месяца назад
@@dianebannister4591, do you worry about the sheep or Piper? I think those two can take care of themselves; but, I do worry about Sandi getting hurt by the ewe, if she lunges at Piper and accidentally knocks Sandi down and tramples her.
@dianebannister4591
@dianebannister4591 4 месяца назад
@@drddianesbryantI am concerned that Piper is irritating the sheep during birthing and after birthing. Birthing is difficult. They might get mad and stomp on her. She runs everywhere by the sheep and I feel tension watching Piper being everywhere under foot and if Sandi doesn't see her, Sandi might trip and fall. Sandi is sturdy, but she could fall on the sheep or babies. I never saw a "Beagle" herd sheep before. That part is amusing to me. My uncle had a beagle to go hunting with him so that it could help him in his hunting attempts. I've always known of Beagles as hunting dogs.
@dianebannister4591
@dianebannister4591 4 месяца назад
@@drddianesbryantYes, that point you made also is valid that if the Ewe gets mad at Piper and goes to ram her and hits Sandi who is in that area, Sandi could get hurt. The sheep are heavy.

It’s amazing that the Ewes look so malnourished after having babies. I truly believe that those mommas just couldn’t keep up with the amount of nutritional needs of all those babies! Those moms and babies are so LUCKY to have you there for their lives! God bless your heart and soul.

It's especially incredible because their feed is so nutritionally and calorie dense! We've seen just how fat the ewes that miss or abort get. Having multiple lambs takes out an incredible amount of energy

I was thinking the same thing... Especially multiple multiples... I can't imagine how much I would have to eat to support good, healthy development of 4 lives in 4 short months. Those Ewe's would have to eat while sleeping.... I don't want to come across as unfeeling. In a medical, scientific way, it seems like a lot.

Sandi, I've been watching your channel since 2019. You inspired me to get sheep, and I've just finished* lambing for the third year. I don't think that it's really possible to understand how invested you are and how much work it is. My first year I had 100% of my 7 ewes successfully give birth. Then year two, new ram, new blood, only half of them gave birth. This year is year three, and of the 7 ewes (only two were with me that first year, the rest were born that year or last year).... 6 have given birth. The 1-year old might not be pregnant. She has about 6 weeks left before I'll know for sure. This year was the first year I had a stillborn baby. I had twins, then triplets, then what seemed to be a single, but the next day I had another set of twins, and found that the single from the day before was a double. A beautiful baby boy lamb, but he was either still born or got stuck while wet and out in the snow in my forest/meadow/pasture, and got hypothermic. I had to build a rock cairn for the baby, as the ground was still mostly frozen. Then this year I had my first ewe who needed help. It was a circus. I don't have any help. The other family members are just waiting for me to get over wanting to have sheep. So I get home and my only yearling ewe is doing the bucking bronco thing, trampling the babies, and racing around the yard. I got her penned up in a small area, and realized she'd picked up a meter long stick from the forest. It was caught in her wool, and every time she took a step it was jabbing her in the rear, so she was flipping out. I chased her above, but didn't want to get injured (my sheep are Jacobs, which means they all have horns, and some have four horns, and she is one with four). The temp was just above freezing, so there was a layer of slime and after 45 minutes of racing around trying to corner the ewe I took a face-plant, right on a jumble of rocks and slime. Tried to catch myself on the side of my tiny little tin barn, but ended up slicing all the skin off my knuckle instead. Finally I'd had enough, and asked my sheep-hating brother in law to join me outside the paddock. I figured that if he stood outside the fence, and I crowded her near the fence, he could grab the offending stick. Of course as soon as he got there she shook it off. All while I was chasing her around, I'd been also eyeing the other sheep, and I was sure that one of the others was in distress or lambing, and so I opened the gate to the forest (they get the forest side in the spring, until the pasture side is ready for them), and in that instant one of the ewes stood up and her water burst as if someone had thrown a water ballon at her, just a huge bursting splash. She was/is one of my ewe lambs from 2 years before, so she had no idea what was going on. AT this point I took out my camera (only 14% of battery remaining, a whole other story in itself) and I started to record her but stay my distance to allow her to do her thing. I was amazed, my camera got 30 minutes before the battery was used up.... and then it occurred to me that I should get some gloves, particularly as I was bleeding from both kneese and both hands from my fall. So I went into the house, washed up a bit, pulled on some gloves, got a towel, and went back down to the forest. I decided to bring in some grain to get the others pre-occupied. When I finished feeding out, I noticed that my girl in labor had her head in the trough pigging out. I guess she didn't know that she shouldn't be hungry while in labor. Eventually, it was more than an hour after her water broke, and she was making no progress, so I had to catch her, tip her over, and inspect the situation. Baby was nowhere near being ready to be born. So I let her do her thing another half an hour, and then she started to strain hard, bellowing like crazy, and NOTHING was happening. So I eventually went up to her and again investigated. I encountered a hoof, pulled one leg out, then the next leg, and wondered if it was a head back baby. (It is NOT easy to figure out what anatomy you're feeling while all squished inside the rear of a ewe!)..... The ewe kept straining but was making no progress, so I decided to try to pull the baby. They're slippery when covered in slime and I couldn't believe how difficult it was! I could see the little lamb's face after some progress, and I thought it was dead. Then I saw the corner of the mouth twitch in a very human looking grimace of discomfort. That gave me strength and I was able to help the ewe the nexxt time she strained. A baby boy! totally not breed-perfect, he won't be registrable, which is fine. Then I worried i'd hurt mum. And once I could, ,I got to my feet to take a deep breath. My forearm itched a bit, and I looked down, and both of my forearms are covered in massive amount of hives. Not sure if it was the tumble I took, landing with my forearms in unmentionable slime, or the slime of birthing, but something was having a devastating affect on me. For me this was ONE single crazy couple of hours, after a full day of work. I know that you deal with a lot, and my numbers don't compare to yours, but what I admire is that you face multiple crises each lambing, and you share it with us. Knowing that others might just pile on you because from the comfort of hind-sight and a computer screen, it's easy to say you know what to do. Sorry, I know this is long. :)

Wonderful that Lambing has turned the corner, slowly but surely! I hate to say that I knew the Big Ewe who had gone down was not going to get up again. She gave everything she ahd for her Lambs, and simply could not muster the energy or the willpower to get back on her feet for herself. It seems sad, but she was brave and refused to give in until her babies were safe, so we should be proud of her sacrifice. Looking forward to the next update on Lambin Spring 2024! A tip for using peanut butter or molasses in backing is to spray the cup or spoon with olive oil. Or what you use as a non-stick spray. It doesn't stick to the cup and slides right out. So you don't have to use a spoon to get the molasses or peanut butter out.

I want to say how radiant Sandi's smile is when the baby lambs are born. Then when a lamb in the warming box improves, it's even a more joyful smile.

I was watching the sheep game I think yesterday and Cam was having a real rough start to Lambing too. Not that that is good by any means, but remember to be kind to yourself. You are not the one in control of these things. I hope u had a wonderful Easter. You are doing fantastic.

it's been two years since you got me through one of the most emotionally draining and hardest times of my life. if i hadn't had your content to look forward to every day to just watch, relax and have half an hour to take my mind off things, i don't know where i'd be today. i came back last january after my grandpa finally passed away, and while i don't remember any of the actual content from that time, i know it helped get me through the day, just one day to the next. there's something about your videos that just, helps. there's been so many other comments like mine, just thanking you for being a bright spot in the darkness. so, from the bottom of my heart, sandi, thank you. for your hard work and dedication both to your wooly flock and your online one. i'm doing well now, and occasionally watch videos still. and i know that, if things get bad again, there's a wonderful lady in canada who will take my mind off things if i need it.

Sandi please don’t stop making your videos to just make shorts. I saw the podcast with you,Mark and Cami which you said shorts are easier and quicker but we love the whole story. It’s very interesting and enjoyable watching your sheep,farming (field,equipment) and your family. We appreciate your time,effort and content. Thank you. Have a wonderful day.

Actually, shorts take me a long time to edit and I quite honestly don’t love making them… BUT I do make them because I know some of my audience is only here for those. So no fear… I really like doing long form content so it’s not going anywhere

Sandy!! I asked a old sheepfarmer about sheep eating wool! And he said that you can get salt lick stones, im not sure what you call it in Canada but it is a big block of salt with minerals. And all of his sheep quit eating wool of each other!! I hope you get to read this!!❤

❤You have been amazing. Even though things did not go so well with losses, you saved so many of the little lambs that could have been lost. Things should settle into your lambing routine. Willow knew you need some loves. 💕🐑💕 It was nice the kids were there for Easter. 🌷Your hot cross buns looked delicious. I prefer the icing cross on top and my father who grew up in a bakery okayed it. He and I were the ones of the family that had to have hot cross buns for Easter.💐

Those who don't understand how hard your job is and who might not be your loyal followers. Can just kick rocks or stand by when you can get time to video. You had a ruff start but hoping that you can get through this lambing on the right foot now. I was hoping that the sick momma's would come into their milk, but the Nanny will have to help. Thank you for sharing your videos and the lambing process. From a viewer who's been watching you for awhile now. City life is so much different than farming or sheep. Keep up the great work and looking forward to the new ewes. ❤🐑🍼

Ah, it's been a tough start to lambing for Cammy too. Just watched his latest video and his triplet momma's are not doing well. Those high-order births just really cause heartache, don't they? I'm always cheering for twins when scanning gets done. I'm hoping you are through the roughest patch - so disheartening to lose so many lambs and mommas in such a short timeframe - and that the rest of this lambing group goes a lot smoother. All the best to you and Carissa over the coming weeks. Carissa the magic Nanny trainer, woot! 🍼 ❤ 🐑❤

Sandi, I just wanted to let you know, I've been watching you on RU-vid for about 6years now. I'm 66 and not a farmer by any means, although I did raise chicken's and one turkey and a total of 4 rooster's. But I ran across your videos and I was hooked. Especially during covide. You and the gorgeous sheep are a great way to start my day. Thank you for sharing. Your lamb's are simply so heart warming.
