Annapurna's employees walking away is yet another sign that developers are getting fed up with publishers and their execs obsession with infinite growth. It's simply unreasonable and unsustainable. Publishers really need a serious wake up call and keep their expectations in check.
I think you misunderstood. The publishing division resigned, not game developers. But it is probably true that the issues at hand were control and ownership.
@@DS9TREK Yes, it is. Take a look at what happened with Concord. Sony thought they had a smash hit in their hands and they ended up with a massive flop instead.
Hopefully the spawcast can cover this briefly but the Physical Switch version for MVC Collection is just a code in the box for Europe. Sucks that we’re getting screwed out of a physical once again.
@@jegjrtp87 Yep, it really sucks. What’s even the point of physical when it’s not actually physical? I’m just not getting it now (I really wanted it but physically so I could own it forever).
Apparently this is only for Europe currently. In my opinion that is even more messed up because why are the U.S and Japan still getting physical copies for the Switch but Europe gets a "code in box"? I'm crossing my fingers 🤞🏾 and hoping the U.S does get the physical because that's what I am waiting on. However that still doesn't change the fact that it's super messed up to single out the European market and give them codes in boxes while giving the U.S and Japan physical cartridges. There has to be a reason and I would like to know what that reason is.
Astro Bot is going to need word of mouth because once again... online sentiment may not always reflect the real world interest or disinterest of something. As far as the normies are concerned... platformers that are not Mario are not likely to capture as many people's interests.
Correct. No matter how angry people get on social media, there is always a target audience for something. Just look at ALL the acts of “protests” and “boycotts” pre Pokemon Sword, Shield, Scarlet and Violet… for all the noise, the games still sold 50+ million combined. I loved Cyberpunk at launch buying it alongside my PS5, but through all the supposed “outrage” the game reached 13 million copies sold in the December of 2020. Social media in reality is a very niche part of life.

Astrobot outsold R&C with digital and physical in UK. People love Astrobot, even normies, you completely wrong. Same with Crash, Spyro and more. Platformers are doing perfectly well, sorry that you and this channel have weird standards for success.
Yeah, nobody cares about Astro Bot. Rightfully so… Hope that crap flops. It’s not a good mascot or a great game. Expanded tech demo, no personality or identity for the lead character, etc. Doesn’t have the makings of anything with legs tbh
Dog eat dog world hence why I started investing as a teen via my parents 12-13 years ago. This is a capitalist world we live in, so why not get a lick of the ice cream. My Crown Jewel involves buying Tesla in the mid $30’s and accumulated Nvidia very early back in 2017-18.
@@mikeuk666 Console gaming is all but dead in Japan. Japanese gaming is mostly on mobile devices (such as phones and the Switch), PC (which has grown massively), and for specific genre in the arcades.
@@mikeuk666they sold about 30, 000 switches for the month in Japan. If you get a switch, you are going to get some of the top games and Mario kart is usually one io the first ones you get. That's why MK continues to do well each month. So that doesn't mean anything when comparing to Astrobot sales.
@@faceurhell I would not say console gaming is “all but dead in Japan”. . The PS5 has sold 4.75 million units, while the PS4 sold 4.59 million units during the same time frame, so far. That's without the price cut that the ps4 had, and the cost of the PS5 has actually gone up. There's a lot of speculation as to why physical sales of certain PS games have not performed well. Some say it's the shift to digital, but switch physicals continue to do very well. The fact is that Switch is a lot cheaper and dominates as a handheld and console, and also that wages have stagnated in Japan whilst prices have increased could also a factor. That probably means more people are going to buy popular switch games instead of PS games, given the choice, and limited funds. The ps5 versions of games always cost more, too. I would still not claim console sales are dead looking at how many units they have sold, though. 4 million is a drop compared to the switch but it’s not “dead” and far from it.
If GTA 6 is not 60fps on both consoles, I am not buying it. So, if GTA 6 runs at only 60fps on the PS5 Pro, while the PS5 runs a 30fps, I am not upgrading just to play GTA 6. I'll wait for the PC port that I suspect will roll out faster than before. I'm tired of double dipping with Rockstar. Rockstar should have GTA 6 running on all platforms at launch. It's stupid
Really hoping Astro Bot sells enough to make Sony happy! Critical acclaim won't do it alone; they have to hit the numbers to prove titles like these are worthwhile to invest in. Everything Team Asobi has put out so far brings me a ton of joy, I want to keep seeing more from them 😊
I just want great studios to continue to be able to make great games, especially if they are unique as Team Asobi. Killing Japan Studios was one of the worst decisions PlayStation could have possibly done.
CNET was restricted because of PSSR I believe. Latest leaks are saying it had some image quality issues that just got resolved in a new patch released to devs this week
It’s being reported that people with Day One PS5’s get the update but it wont work for their style system. This is absolutely ridiculous. Why not wait until ALL your customers can get the update before pushing it out, regardless of console date or location. Now you are fracturing your audience (again). Sony is being run into the ground.
@@PatatexJok3rZIF the OP is right, you get the changes in a later update. But I heard day one switches wouldn’t get all the updates. I’m in Japan and I got all the other updates except the UI change which is due to be rolled out at a later date for some regions.
The only aspect of this update origanl PS5 owners aren't getting is the adaptive charging for the USB ports. Personally, I have a charging dock anyway so this is irrelevant to me not buying it.
Sony is basically dead in Japan now. PS5 is posting abysmal Xbox sales numbers, especially after recent price hike and its gonna get even worse whenever Switch 2 comes along :-)
@@elcourier Yes I am actually. I loved PS1-4 and they got exactly what is deserved moving hq to California of all places chasing western market, bias censoring of Asian games and beloved studio closures :-)
@@SamM_Scot OK, I guess that will teach them a lesson or something.. although I don’t think they are doing comparatively bad in China.. anyway, how does that affect you though? Would you like more japanese-centric games from Playstation and you’re not getting it?
Yeah sorry not sorry, The lost crown was not good it was mediocre at best, and it was even more hilarious that they tried selling a $25 buck game for $50 bucks and had a season pass.
@@lutherheggs451 I’ve played through the game 3 times already and will play it more in the future so I got my money’s worth. What season pass? Do you mean the free updates that included boss rush, fast travel from the Wak Wak Trees, and the Divine Trials? The only thing that costs money is the story DLC that comes out on the 17th and it’s only $5.00. The game is quality to me but if it’s not for you that’s fine.
For anyone who remembers the Metroid prime remastered physical release schedule, I personally wouldn’t mind if Nintendo used that model moving forward. Digital now, physical 2 weeks or so later. I’m the kind of gamer who can wait for my physical game and doesn’t spend enough time on the Internet to see spoilers.
its an interesting strategy to say the least. Because folks with FOMO will buy digital right now, and then those that want physical will either wait, or, buy it again for the shelf space.
Even if it doesn't affect you personally it's better as a community to push back against physical media being a second thought. We're lucky that nintendo still values it, but if people get complacent enough we might see that option diminish more and more in the future, much like the other consoles have successfully done
@@Valoric Nah, physical is a dying trend. Casuals don't have time to keep physical collections anymore, and look at how long PC has been digital only.
That's one thing I won't be missing when the all digital future: Leaks due to 3rd party retailers where a game breaks street-date. The one and only thing.
Annapurna figured it out... corpo (billionares daughter) wont negotiate, everyone walks. The only way to improve working conditions at this point is collective action. Never thought the Guilded Age would return...
11:45 You were pretty close. It was Danmaku, with dan being more like Dahn. (think of it like it's arabic and you get the pronunciation right) Danmaku is what they call bullet hells over there in japan.
5:48 TOTK leaked 13 days before launch, I was playing it on the morning of May 1st 2023. Now Echoes of Wisdom has seemingly leaked 14 days before launch, it's not that big of a difference if you ask me. EDIT: Seems like the leak was fake anyway...
John, the way you described annapurna in no way clarified that it was a PUBLISHING division that resigned, not a developer studio. You mind of made it sound like they were developing games. They just funded, organized releases, and marketed games.
That Blade Runner game was probably going to be amazing considerign the passion Anna Purna had, cant replace that motivation/creativity. Figures a nepotist boss doesnt care, and makes worse decisions.
Yay, more ugly obtrusive UI for my gaming console. I thought I opened my videogame hardware, not a news paper. All im saying is, if my console turned on. . . it's because i'm trying to play a game, buy a SPECIFIC game. . . or use that consoles social features to contact my gaming friends. Get anything else that isn't those 3 things off of my system and out of my face. Thanks. (Seriously, this is starting to get as bad as windows 11.)
The ps5 update is not live, at least completely. Many in the US, including myself have the update yet our system doesn't reflect it. No welcome screen, still the explore tab. Bullshit.
@@ethanshackleton Yes but the thing is, it's supposed to be in the update. If I got the update, where is it? I get that the update itself is a gradual rollout, but I got the update (also I live in the USA).
I started reading about what was going on with Annapurna last night. When I realized I’d have to do even the slightest bit of research to get the full story I thought… I’ll just wait to hear about the details in NewsWave 😂
Jon, I fully expect that when layoff totals hit over 9000, you tell us in the style of the great prince Vegeta. "Bringing the new layoff total to over 9000!"
Low sales across the board is due to global recession in play. It’s got less and less to do with product quality anymore. People are now only going out of their way to buy personal favourites imo.
The diference between a PS5 and a PS5 Pro, when it comes to visuals and performance, is just as significant as the diference between how a PS5 Slim and how a PS5 Pro looks.
If the PS% lie to their costumers on launch and now they will come with an update that will have what they initially promise but it will cost costumers at least 700 bucks why people keep buying their systems.
I wholeheartedly agree with the comment of the day. The PS5 (and at least the XBS X) was supposed to be the system/systems that would allow developers to develop games without limits and yet here we are having 2 separate modes because current gen systems can't handle 60 FPS/4K simultaneously when it comes to a huge chunk of current gen only games. The first crack I saw in the wall was when WB announced that Gotham Knights was only going to run at 30 FPS. I figured that was just going to be a one-off scenario of the developers not being able to optimize the game to run at 60 FPS but then you have had more developers who have managed to do 60 FPS but not at 4K or 30 FPS at 1080p with some upscaling. Honestly, I'd leave the ultra high visuals and frame rate to PC versions of games and just focus on getting 60 FPS at 1080p or 1440p on console. Developers should master that first before attempting higher visuals at 60 FPS. Have a good weekend.
Microsoft cutting redundant jobs was expected, and shouldn’t be a surprise for anyone. It’s not what anyone wants, but they are a business. Jobs are lost everywhere thanks to the flawed corporate structure and share owners that needs the graph to go more up than the previous year. There needs to be a change to avoid a total collapse that could happen in all segments that are relying on shareholders.
@@mikeuk666yeah most people don’t realize these companies have quotas for firing and hiring each year also lol, And people forget how many people these bigger corps have employed, So when they see things like 150 lay offs meanwhile the company has 100,000 employees they think it’s a lot
I think the point is that it’s notable and unexpected because although it’s a difficult time in the industry they are laying off a lot more than other companies, and closing publishers, some of whom were successful. There’s also the fact they bought these huge publishers and developers and phill Spencer promised they wouldn’t be cutting jobs. It’s particularly egregious when they post eye watering profits. They could afford to weather a difficult period and invest for the long term. They could stop buying companies and then closing them after a poor game or even a slightly profitable one that had critical acclaim for their games. But shareholders demand high short term results which are always on the up , and that’s the crux of the matter. They deserve to be singled out and criticized.
@@makasete30 You are absolutely missing the point here. Why should Microsoft keep people employed in a redundant position? Many of the people who was fired would have lost their jobs anyway, most likely more people would if the deal didn’t go through.
Something funny is going on with the switch in Japan. The software sales don’t match hardware sales. How could they sell 70,000 switches and there is barely 70,000 pieces of software sold in the top 10? They are exporting them to other countries and people are getting games in other regions. Unless everyone is just upgrading their switch and not buying new software but that would be so odd for the numbers to be so out of sync.
PlayStation fans have spent years telling themselves that platformers and just fun games are for kids on Nintendo so now even when their system gets a high quality gameplay focused game, they don't want to buy it
Jon, you’re killing me. It’s “versus” not “Verse” please man. It’s a plague that does not need to infect this beautiful channel you have going on here 18:49
I've spent roughly the cost of a PS5 Pro on a bunch of retro hardware. A Dreamcast, Neo Geo and a Saturn with enough games to keep me going for the foreseeable future. Sony aren't apple and apple customers aren't gamers.
Since you invited the comments, a good rule of thumb when reading romaji is to treat the vowels almost like Spanish. Don’t use English rules and alternate the vowel sounds, 99% of the time they stay the same: A = ah E = eh I = ee O = oh U = oo So “danmaku” would be more like “dahnmahkoo” with tall A’s.
The reason it seems odd that Zelda leaked, is because it has not leaked. For one, the usual dataminers have not said it has and if you check forums, no one has evidence. What appears that happen was that someone shared a photo of the game running on a emulator but its not true.
I salute Annapurna for walking out like that. It (sadly) takes a lot for employees to come together and rise up against a big company like that. Wouldn’t of been easy either given I’m assuming they are all out of a job right now
Astro. It sold better in just Amazon US than the whole of Japan prob. The game was understocked. Word of mouth will help there but Japan is rough if you are not Nintendo.
PS5 pro user base will be so small that it'll make it difficult for developers to justify spending money and resources on the PS5 pro enhanced version of a game.
Jon, you’re killing me. It’s “VERSUS” not “Verse” please man. It’s a plague that does not need to infect this beautiful channel you have going on here 18:49
I think Nintendo needs to do digital copy first then hardcopy a week to two weeks later this may stop their intellectual properties from getting out there way ahead of the release date whatever happened here is gonna make it hard for us to get hardcopies for people who like to collect their gamesthis is a shame that these people are doing this and this needs to stop all they gonna do is push digital games and stop making physical games sooner than later

The only way Sony has managed to make a game this gen worth a damn was to rip off Mario, what does that tell us? It’s no one’s fault but Sonys that they don’t have mascots. Microsoft has had opportunity as well and fumbled just as hard.
@@Happy_HandYeah, same. Unsubbed from him a long time ago because of this exact reason. Feels like he just straight up makes shit up. Seems like he hasn't changed. Lol
So disappointed in PS5 Pro. I called that it would be $700 but never in my wildest dreams did I think they would remove the disc drive off their flagship model. Slap in my face.
No, nintendo has definitely already shown too much of the game in trailers. They almost always do this. I get that they want to keep the hype up for a game, but we don't need a dozen detailed overview trailers before it even comes out. Just make a couple minute-long trailers that mash up quick cuts of gameplay to drop every month or so and keep the game in the back of people's heads
Went to GameStop to buy Astro Bot because wanted use points for discount, every store around me doesn’t have it in stock. Checked 6 stores within my area.
I've seen thumbnails of people reviewing the MIG dumper, I wonder if its introduction into the market has made it easier for people to dump games thus what would be one person getting their hands on the game early because now more likely to become a leak.
Everyone who defended and encouraged Microsoft through all their acquisitions should feel guilty. These layoffs are not surprising. Large corporate acquisitions are almost never in the interest of the workers
Nintendo did a very good job making sure certain games couldn’t leak with the whole canceling preorder thing like PPTYD. Why couldn’t they do the same for Echoes? Only they know 🤷🏾♂️
