Just wanted to quickly shout out Len Carlson, the voice actor who portrayed Ganon. Not only was he the first VA to voice Loki and Quicksilver in the old school 60s Marvel cartoons, he also later voiced Hugo and Q in Street Fighter 3 Third Strike.
Old man gamer here... The MarioBros Super Show premiered around late 80s and ran early in the morning at least out here in Central Valley CA along with Captain N sometimes. The Mario Cartoon segment was basically a combo of Mario 1+2, then there was a seperate Mario3 series, then a seperate MarioWorld series, and then a live action King Koopa Show
So Ganon’s portals to the “underworld” are the shows take on dungeons. In the original manuals of Zelda 1 the main area was the “overworld” and the dungeons the “underworld.” So the DiC cartoon interpreted this more literally, with the underworld being Ganon’s realm/domain and the dungeon entrances something Ganon can just magically summon at whim.
@@masonasaro2118 I hate the um actually meme. It's like someone made it up because they were sick & tired of constantly getting things wrong & people calling them out on their mistakes. And now that has been adopted by everybody, nobody wants to correct others & teach them new things because they know they will get picked on unless they add a 🤓👆 at the end & it's just so obnoxious that you need to do that.
@@leonlegendPeople use it on themselves now to say "I know this doesn't really matter and I'm just being a nerd here, but I want you to know what the actual info is". It's also a simple way to say "I know I'm being annoying by correcting you, BUT-"
I do like the design for Zelda in this, if nothing else. While my favorite design for the princess will always be Hyrule Warriors, I do think she looks good in purple, especially with the orange hair this version has.
Every Friday, the cartoon portion of the SMBSS was an episode of Zelda. I looked forward to it every week. The scarcity made it feel so special. Also, I was 11, so the fact that Link was an absolute douche went right over my head.
48:43 fitting name lantern of shame. Also, I like this idea that zelda and link are partners rather then her needing rescuing. Akin to a two member party .
10 year old me found the box set of this series in a Barnes and Nobles. Never knew there was a LoZ cartoon and immediately bought and watched the whole thing. I no longer have the box, but I do have the DVD's to make sure I always have the copy. It was fun to watch as a kid, but I do agree this series isn't good, but it's not horrendous. Though whenever I tell people of the series and offer to let them watch it, I do tell them "Hey this is based off of LoZ 1 and 2, so its older and not all that good" as a warning because this show makes for a good drinking game.
There was also a comic; if I remember correctly, one of them had the "I am Error" guy as a character that Link starts a fight with but gets his ass kicked.
This show made my Fridays. Like you said, getting a cartoon this accurate was a rarity, and compared to the weird movie and genre parodies of the first Mario cartoon, the Zelda cartoon was especially exceptional. It also exemplifies an era that Zelda has long left: 80s sword and sorcery. I miss this aesthetic so much, and I really wish the franchise would revisit it sometime.
I remember watching this as a kid in the early 90s. I want to say it was around 1990 - 1991. Part of the reason the series was so short is actually because it only aired on Fridays, Monday to Thursday were Mario cartoons. On top of that, while the show did start as The Super Mario Bros. Super Show, with the live action segments starring Captain Lou Albano as Mario and Danny Wells as Luigi, it was eventually repackaged as Club Mario, which was hosted by two teenagers named "Tommy Treehugger" and "Co-MC". It's just as 90s as it sounds.
I remember catching the end of an episode of _The Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3_ on TV and begging my mom to record the show in that time slot the next week. And the week after, until we had ten and a half episodes. That show was an hour long program with a 15 minute episode of _Mario Bros. 3_ then a 30 minute episode of Season 2 of _Captain N_ then a second _Mario Bros. 3_ episode. I loved that show. Still have the VHS tapes. It wasn't until a few years later that I saw the _Super Show_ being aired Sundays on YTV, though I was able to piece together that the _Mario_ episodes were set before the events of _Mario Bros. 3_
As someone who suffered a watch along for Sonic Underground for an 8 hour review (Not by me, by Miki/ThornBrain). I’ve been kinda interested in seeing more of these older Game Cartoons to see if they hold up… I already know this will not.
@@NEEDbaconOh I've been a fan of hers for a while now, and this basically gave me the quickest Vietnam flash back to that whole ordeal... plus I had a VHS with both an episode of this show and Sonic Underground, so they have a weird connection for me.
There was actually a series of comics based of Nintendo properties. From what I understand, this is what this cartoon and “Captain N: the Game Master” where loosely based off. I say loosely because I remember the Zelda comic being way better. It did a great job actually using themes from the games and plots that made a little bit more sense. Like one where Link actually tries training Zelda or a what if where Link gets a hold of the triforce of power. They never had an over-arching plot in any way. Basically short story format. Have no idea why they didn’t use those stories but this is a cartoon from ‘89 and it definitely has that 80s/90s flair
I really liked the show when I was little and I found it on the internet, I didn't watch more than one or maybe two episodes, but the idea of Zelda fighting and adventuring alongside Link to fight Ganon was really good in my opinion, also Link being open about wanting to kiss Zelda is different from Mario and Peach's weird relationship, a bit too many attempts at kisses though lol.
There are at least 4 or 5 really good Zelda episode cartoons. My favs are That Sinking Feeling, The White Knight, Doppelganger, Fairies in the Spring, The Missing Link. The Moblins are Revolting is a funny finale to the series. Link and Zelda win by doing absolutely nothing.
I'm surprised Link even got to have his kiss at all, given all that has prevented him throughout the story. Granted, it's in another show, Captain N, but it's the same Link and Zelda, and it's just nice that they gave Link that at all. It's not amazing but it's something I guess.
Excuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuse me princess!
So the big reason for Zelda and Link's uh "chemistry?" in this show is actually because of forgotten Bruce Willis vehicle, Moonlighters, which is the content that Adults are suppose to get out of this. Also, this show predates "The Dark World" so the "Undergrounds" are supposed to represent the dungeons of Zelda 1 and 2.
Assuming they got people who are die hard Zelda fans who know the lore inside and out, I wouldn't mind seeing them take another shot at a Zelda series.
I feel like this Link and Sprite deserve each other. They both base their entire personalities around making pushy romantic remarks towards people who clearly do not appreciate their attitude. Link definitely deserves tasting his own medicine, that's for sure. At any rate, I wonder if the frog episode intended to reference the Bubble enemies' ability to curse Link with the inability to use his sword. I assume that they mixed up which enemy had the ability and accidentally gave it to the Gibdoes instead, despite the fact that the latter have no special abilities in the NES era.
It'll nice if Nintendo do a brand new animated Zelda series. Now that the Super Mario Bros movie has reached box office record, or they could make a animated movie.
Man, you gotta love when 80's cartoons couldn't have direct violence, so everything just shoots laser beams. At least it makes the sounds from the games, which is better than the D&D cartoon, which has the sound effect of a fat man getting stuck in a tube
@@darienb1127 same with kids shows today don't know many kids shows that use weapons on people even the newer tmnt cartoons they barley use there weapons
The Zelda cartoon is okay. It has its cringe with nearly every character being an unlikable creep, but it also has its charm. Sprite is my favorite character. Captain N is genuinely atrocious and absolutely butchers not just Nintendo games, but also Konami and Capcom games as well. A crossover between so many NES series would be so cool on paper, but it was completely butchered by Captain N into complete garbage. Pit is misnamed Icarus, Mega Man is green and yellow and sounds like a chain smoking baby, Simon is a sexist coward, Mother Brain looks like a literal booger, etc. Not to mention all the other cameos that were completely butchered by the show.
@@KrimsonKattYTdespite agreeing with everything you said about captain n, i still want to see a reimagined kevin in the next smash bros, fighting alongside (or against) the REAL versions of his teammates… blame those “smash bros lawl” videos for that
Let's be fair, there were only two LoZ games at the time, neither of which had very good stories. You didn't have decades worth of stories and mythos back than. The writers did their best with what they had.
I actually remember disliking this as a kid because it cut into my SMBSS. I didnt play the Zelda games as a kid, so I have the same fondness for it that I did for the other show. However, looking back on it now, cringey humor and repetitive plots aside, it was a fun show and I'm impressed with how much they borrowed from the source material. One thing I wished they had done was bring up the Triforce of Courage, which I bet they would've done had the show run longer.
The Triforce of Courage wasn't introduced until A Link to the Past and arguably wasn't established as Link's until Ocarina of Time, which both came after this show. Back in Zelda 1 there was ONLY the Triforce of Wisdom and the Triforce of Power. Zelda 2 had no Triforce.
@@KrimsonKattYT Have you played or even heard of The Adventure of Link? It came out in 1988. The plot is centered around getting the Triforce of Courage. The unified Triforce is what Link uses to awaken the sleeping Zelda. Google it, you can see the end shows all three Triforce pieces in the ending cutscene.
@@KrimsonKattYT The Triforce of Courage is literally the McGuffin Link searches for in Zelda II. It's what he gets when he defeats Dark Link and then uses all three facets of the Triforce to awaken the sleeping Zelda.
Didn't the mega man ruby spears cartoon like over 100 episodes or something? I remember it being pretty long. Considering the Zelda cartoon only has 13 episodes and this video is over an hour the Megaman cartoon video could easily be over a dozen 10 hour parts. Mega Man Powered Up, the more recent show and the sister show to Sonic Boom and Pac Man The Ghostly Adventures, is a better choice since it's only around 20 episodes or something and got cancelled very early on.
