Hes the guy who rides the elevator up to the 30th, walks up to the 32nd, and notices the L bracket. So he calls dispatch, gets engineering, etc... Dude stays there, takes fire, remains calm, calls for backup, and probably saves more lives.

thats true. also the environment makes a huge difference too. i was firing an air rifle that shoots pellets at super sonic speeds in my basement and it was so loud i was afraid it would sound like gun fire so i stopped shooting those lighter weights indoors. i take the same gun outside and fire into a open field and you cant hardly hear it. as there is little for the sound to bounce off of and back at me. walk down to where there was corn and then i could hear the sound bouncing off the corn and back at me loud again.

The 1st is the loud BANG of the gunpowder igniting and the 2nd is the CRACK of the bullet breaking the sound barrier, essentially a small sonic boom. The sound of an automatic gun being fired at a distance can easily be mistaken for a string of firecrackers, especially for someone unfamiliar with guns or someone at place like Las Vegas where fireworks are really common.
