The aim of this project is to expand on the themes found in “Six Songs from A Shropshire Lad” composed by George Butterworth with poems from A. E. Housman's “A Shropshire Lad”. Housman's cycle contains sixty-three poems whose major themes include coming of age, loss of innocence, living life to its fullest, mortality and the inevitability of death. The poems are often linked to war, not only because of their themes but because of their incredible popularity among British soldiers during the Boer War and First World War. Butterworth died as a causality of the First World War, being shot by a sniper in 1916. Though his short life doesn't yield the same name recognition as some of his contemporaries, his music is a treasure to those who know it. As I come from a modest Canadian city named Kingston, I decided to titled this recital “A Kingston Lad” to enforce the connection I have come to feel with the Butterworth songs. As a young man of a similar age to those depicted in these poems, it is very easy to find yourself within them. “A Shropshire Lad” never fails to touch the heart, whether you come from the rolling country side of Shropshire or the icy banks of the great lakes.
“A Kingston Lad” will take us on a journey through young adulthood. Starting with the concept of home and the feeling you get when you leave and return for the first time. Followed by the brightness of a naive first love and the loss and pain that can be felt by giving too much away. Next is a warning of the dangers of isolation and living selfishly. Contrasted by a life lived lightly with fun and passion thrusted to the forefront. Then comes a call to adventure, a promise that affects all loved ones. Ending with, a moment of remembrance for those lost along the way and a changed self.
