Mickey, Mickey, Mickey... You were so busy talking you completely missed the soundtrack on the trailer! They made a totally epic blacksmith's hammer version of Roger Taylor's iconic drum intro to "We Will Rock You". From that we can certainly deduce that they are A) Inspired and B) Using at least that one track from the movie. I'm sold! 😍😍👏👏👏👏👏👏😁😁🥰🥰
For what it's worth, elder Millenial in Canada here and I remember this movie being HUGE when it came out. A big hit with the boys for the action, a big hit with the girls for the romance, EVERYONE and their mother loved it. Could just be in my area that it was popular but I don't think so.
Just booked to see this with my fellow 42 yo elder millenial uni friend, her husband, and the wife, literally on opening night (it was the date that worked best for us). We'll be driving down from the Frozen North (Dundee). We've made a habit of seeing a play together every few years - usually at the Exchange and usually involving Maxine Peake (prior outings were to Hamlet and The Skriker) but I'm not sure we'd've noticed this one in time were it not for your blog. SO! Thank you. Not in general a fan of jukebox musicals, I am keen to see how this one is mounted (pun intended).
The excitement i had when i saw this is unreal, and I've never been more excited to tell my boyfriend about a musicals existence as its one of his favourite films! The immediate casting thought i had was Ben Joyce, especially given that he's leaving back to the future soon
✋ I saw moulin rouge in the west end with absolutely no idea it was a movie or a jukebox musical. I thought it was a conventional original musical. A few minutes in, I was deeply confused 😂
There used to be an official collaboration “Manchester Gets It First’, not sure if this still exists, but a LOT of shows have opened at The Opera House before a West End run. As well as those you mentioned we also got, Ghost, Sister Act, 9 to 5, Bat Out Of Hell. And more recently, Burlesque. And now a new one to get excited about!!!!
Burlesque was absolutely not worth seeing. The movie had a serviceable plot and characters, but the star was the singing and dancing. Jess Foley, Nicky, and todricks standin were great, but the new changes completely broke the already weak plot and characters. Tess is not a good casting choice, even Cher was better. I can't see it succeeding without MAJOR changes. However, I loved visiting Manchester, it is a great city to visit.
It's a great movie, not least because of the music (the Golden Years dance is always my favourite), but I am having trouble seeing it on stage. As you say, the jousting is going to be tricky.
I am old man. Could be your grandfather. This movie is truly fabulous in all that fabulous entails. An absolutely perfect choice for a movie to stage adaptation. Kudos to the original creators/ conceptors.
Amazing opening! I had no idea about this either but as soon as I heard I was like OF COURSE I know all the moments I want as songs already- annnnnd I will be up in northern britain when it premiers!!!!
I read about it this morning and was totally excited by it. I love this movie, though I haven't seen it in several years. I hope it comes to the stage with a terrific adaptation. And jousting??? I'm with you, how does that work? I'm glad "We Will Rock You" is in the trailer (which I'd also missed until reading kitsworld's comment). The other must have song for me is "Golden Years." That scene is so iconic. I look forward to your April 2025 review! I'm in California, so the odds of me getting over there to see it are very slim so I'll have to live through you. And now I need to go re-watch the movie... which I hope I have since it's on a streaming service I don't subscribe to.
Maybe the movie is not well known today but when it was released I think it was a hit, the concept wasn’t overused by then. I really loved it. I am not a massive fan of jukebox musicals but I enjoy theatre in general, & Juliet got me in stitches, so I think this one can be really good!
A Knight's Tale is one of my favourite films!!! I think there's a lot of potential for a stage adaptation so it's very exciting. I am very intrigued about how they will do jousting onstage though!
I'm breathlessly awaiting the musical versions of Silence of the lambs and Black Swan ...JOKING! Thanks to you sir, I'm seeing WICKED this weekend for the first time on BWAY.
Would have been a must see for me, one of my big childhood film memories, but gutted it’s a jukebox. Will hinge on how they stage the horses and jousting I think, I’ll be eagerly awaiting the reviews!
This is my favorite movie, I'm so deeply excited! I hope this is good. I hope they add new and exciting things to make this an interesting theatrical interp. This just made my day.
This was the first movie I saw that had anachronistic music which I thought was odd to hear We Will Rock You, I don't remember if there were other songs. I hadn't seen Moulin Rouge in 2001 but I feel now by 2024, that "modern music in a historical setting" trope is normalized. I hope it tours. The color theme is very Miami Vice but I could see it working. It is more of an obscure movie from the early 2000s but they were able to turn Heathers, a more obscure cult classic, Hairspray, also an obscure cult classic into hit musicals, so they probably could do the same with A Knight's Tale.
I love the movie so color me stoked! Also, I think Keelan McCauley, currently playing J.D. on tour with Heathers, would be fantastic as Will Thatcher. For Count Adhemar, I would absolutely lose it if they got Stewart Clarke. I know he’s in Les Mis, but let a gal dream! ⚔️💖🩵
The only thing I know about a Knight‘s Tale is that it was only ever Heath Ledger to me. But I’m like halfway thru the video & I still haven’t heard anything about the re-materialization of the great Heath Ledger. What’s happening here!💋 🃏 Is this like when Tony departed down the River Styx whereupon Heath turns into Depp, & Farrell, & Law, & so on, in Dr. Parnassus’s Imaginarium? 💋💋💋 🃏
just wow. England is so much more interesting I feel than we are in NY....I have visited London twice a year for the last few years to catch up...and I was about to take a break for a year or two (after just catching the "um, interesting" revival of Starlight, and thinking its time to call it a day for a few days..but then I saw Next to Normal right after and that was blow-away territory...and I guess I should mention this was one of ours...but I also feel this was the "D"efinitive run)...but then something bonkers always ends up coming 'round..... juke box musical?? hmm....reserve judgement. if it were a backdoor Queen jukeboxer...that I could get behind. ....actually ... David B....I could get on board....
Aside from Paul Bettany, I strongly disliked the film. It wasn't realistic, and it wasn't fun and fantastical, but uncomfortably in the middle. And I'm no jukebox musical fan. But it could work better on the stage, which is more a land of make believe.
