A KTM 390 Adventure - What its like offroad.

In this video I talk about my experience riding the the KTM 390 Adventure offroad, but not just any type of offroad riding. I talk about what it was like riding the Colorado Alpine passes and riding part of the Colorado Backcountry Discovery Route. I break the video down into pieces and talk about the engine, suspension, ergonomics and electronics. I have ridden this bike 2200 miles with almost half of those miles coming on dirt. I have actual overland trip experience on this bike above and beyond what you will see from the journalist that have reviewed this bike.

Good review on that bike Matt. You channel is growing my man!! As soon as I heal up I'll be doing the CABDR on my Beta. It was your video that changed my mind on taking all that deep sand on my Super Tenere. I very much appreciate you reviews and feedback on ADV riding and camping for us guys who are not "expert riders". I don't believe the average rider realizes the limitations of these machines. It's really a wake up call when I get off my loaded down Super Tenere and jump on my 300lb dual sport. You made a really good choice on a lightweight and very capable machine. Also you can't go wrong with Black Dog products. Thank you Sir!!

Thanks for the very thorough evaluation. I just bought one of these and I appreciate all the information. Like you, I would have preferred more enduro-like capability (and I hope KTM comes out with an enduro version) but for 90% of what I do (commuting, weekend backroading) this lightweight bike should do just fine. I ordered the KTM bigger windshield for mine. Plan panniers etc. They're selling lots of these bikes and the aftermarket is going to be big for them.

Good and honest review Matt, thanks man. I took a demo ride on a 390 about three weeks ago and was blown away by it! I have three bikes at the moment, Kwak ZX9R Sports Bike, XT660Z Tenere for Adventure and the new Honda 125 Monkey Bike for Smiles and throwing in the back of my camper van for adventures. After that demo ride on the 390, I think the ZX9R will be moving on and being replaced by the KTM. I’ve been interested in a smaller capacity adventure bike to sit alongside my beloved Tenere for sometime now and I think I’ve found what I need in the KTM 390. It’s ideal for the shorter, more localised, weekend way type adventures and will make a superb commute bike, being so light and flick-able. Slightly off topic, but I really like that Tusk tank bag you have mounted up. I’m in the UK and I’ve searched and searched for one here, but it seems there are zero stockists over here? Do you happen to know if it a USA only sold product buddy? Best regards, Dazza. 🇬🇧

G’day mate Really enjoyed your review and you have confirmed to me everything I was looking for in a real world application review such as yours. One thing i would like to know ( well a few things actually 😃) 1) info of the rear luggage racks ie; does it come standard with the Panier and rear box frame thingy ( i don’t know what you call that sorry) 2) which are the best value for money ( secure and tough) side Paniers and top box in your opinion? 3) if loading the bike to the max with a pillion passenger what rear suspension would you recommend to install that is still allowing me to have a soft ride once empty for daily commute in the city? 4) what is the stuff you have mounted at the front ?? Purpose , extra brackets used and did it affect the handling? 5) I think it’s perfect for me and where I go here in the Philippines 🇵🇭 just wanted to find out about these things as the bike isn’t yet available to us here and any info you can provide on what to add in addition to the stock setup would be very much appreciated 🙏🏼 Thanks in advance, ride safe, stay safe and healthy and hope you have a great Christmas 🎄 and a worry free 2021. Cheers Jim Ohh i forgot, if you look at my profile picture you see my current setup, it’s a Duke 200, and as you can see of all the gear it is just to small for the two of us, hence why i am thinking of buying the 390 Adventure once it’s on sale here in the Philippines 🇵🇭 hoping I can adjust the 390 for all the extra weight ( i know it’s not designed or recommend for carrying all this 🤷‍♂️) but hope to stop it from bottoming out once going off road. Anyway that’s all 🥴😬😂
@advmatt
@advmatt 3 года назад
Hey Jim, there are a lot of questions here, let me see if I can cover all of them. The pannier racks are from a company in India, Zana International. I did a video on the pannier rack and the tail rack. It has all of the details you are looking for.. I dont have a recommendation on saddle bags. There are too many brands at different price points and features. It depends on your needs. As for the rear shock. The stock shock should work for you. You just have to adjust the preload ring for different loads. I would turn the preload ring to the max setting when you are fully loaded. You may also need to adjust the rebound setting to slow down how fast it reacts. The bags mounted to the front are my tools and puncture repair kit. I have a video on this which describes how to make your crash bar bags. Depending the market your bike may or may not come with crash bars. My bike came with them. I really enjoy riding this bike, it should work well for coming off of the Dule 200.

Another great video! I have a F800 GSA and it’s getting too heavy and tall for picking it up riding the trails for a 58 year old. I am seeking for something lighter and still enjoy the long travel. Did you consider the KTM 690 and 790 before decided on the 390? How does the 390 perform on the highway with other speeding traffic, heavy cross wind and comfort? Thanks!
@advmatt
@advmatt 3 года назад
I briefly considered the both the the 690 and 790. I did a video explaining my decision. It was last fall if you want to see all of my decision making. The 690 requires too many after market parts to make a long distance travel bike. The 790 costs more than I wanted to spend and I have seem some videos about these bikes and reliability issues. The 390 Adv can run 80mph if you want, although gas mileage is poor. The bike light so it can blown around more than a heavy bike. I avoid interstates as much as possible but when I do have use them the bike is adequate, nothing more. Overtaking another vehicle takes planning at high speeds. I am getting ready to do a nearly 3000 mile trip on my 390 Adv. It is perfectly suited, well except for the seat is you need something plush.

Matt, I really like the 390 Adventure and would like to purchase one to do a BDR. But I am super concerned about reliability. How has your MC been -do you trust it? Also, do you have any problems keeping the revs up to go up and over mountain passes?

I totally trust my 390 Adv. I have ridden most of the CABDR on it and some of the Colorado Alpine passes. I have never had an issue with lack of power offroad. If you watch my video, "When everything goes wrong", you will see some pretty challenging terrain where I took the 390 Adv. Only issue I have is a blown rear shock at 10k miles. Those were hard miles. I do long distance travel and lots of offroad travel. It has been a great bike for me.

There were some reservations when I first bought it but since I'm new to offroading, I think this will work out very well. I have not changed the gearing and probably wont. I think it has a good compromise for both onroad and offroad. As long as i kept the RPMs up it did everything I asked of it, which included really steep ascents in Colorado. Maybe ride a bit more and adjust how you ride this bike compared to others.

I'm now 58 years old, have a small build 5'7" tall, 32 inch inseam and weigh 140 lbs, so a lower seat height and lighter weight bike is important. I plan on doing about 50% pavement, 40% twin track and 10% single track, a long as some multi day trips. I have ridden the G310R, the smaller road version of the BMW. I like the engine of the KTM 390 much more. It has much more power that you can feel. I didnt like the seat of the G310GS when I sat on it. The way the seat pan is configured it feel like I could move around much. Is the quick-shift really installed on all US 390 ADV? I never tried on my 2021 and thought it was a dealer-installed option. But the slipper clutch is so light that it's just fun to use and blip the throttle and match gear speed... I've heard that the US-spec bike has stronger wheel castings compared to some overseas markets. Have you heard of this or had any concerns with the alloys bending in gravel/rock riding? I thought all of the U.S. bikes came with the quick shifter as a standard, but with this quick shifter you have to blip the throttle, it is not like more sophisticated shifters. How is it on the hwy?That's my question..
@advmatt
@advmatt 3 года назад
Good question. This bike is a blast to ride on the roads. It is light nimble and flickable. It is not intended for long hours at interstate speeds but can handle short stints without any problems. I have to re-record the road review for this bike. I hope to have it out in the next couple of months.

@@advmatt i think the industry as a whole needs to start dropping weight..Big ADV bikes are great on road and gravel but terrible offroad because their too heavy.If they put out a smaller bike with decent horsepower and a few road comforts i would be all over it in an instant.

What panniers did you go with?
@advmatt
@advmatt 3 года назад
I was using the Givi Canyon bags but one came off and was list. I just purchased Tusk Pilot bags. I havent used them yet, but I am packed for a 10 day trip starting next week.

@@advmatt nice, so is that a GIVI rack? Or Tusk rack?
@advmatt
@advmatt 3 года назад
@@advryan1 its neither rack. The rack is from Zana International. I have a couple videos from last fall regarding the tail and pannier racks. Much less expensive solution.

I havent seen what is involved in KTM adventure rally so I dont know. I will say I have taken this bike places I would never have taken my R1200GS.

The 390 adventure top speed 167kmph / 105mph Cruising at 130kmph / 80mph Easily!! I don't understand why everyone seems to think the 390 Adventure can't or won't maintain highway/ freeway speeds it's just not true !!! If you need to overtake just kick it down to 5th gear and GO !!!

Totally agree, I am working on the complimentary video to this one talking about what this bike is like on the road. Should post within the next week to address all the questions I get about it on the road. Cheers.

Its not an off road bike. Sure , it will go off road but the suspension and wheels are not designed for enduro.

Yep, not an offroad bike. It's an adventure bike. Not great at any one thing but capable of just about everything, slowly.
