could you PLEASE do a 19th century nighttime routine?? I'm very interested in this time period and want to try experimenting with their daily routines and compare it to the results I have in our modern days, but I am not sure what exactly was done at night.... did they wash their faces or do anything specific with their hair, or use certain products? (and also, where do you get these products that you have used, or how could I make them?)

I've always loved the early 1800's empire style dresses, they were adorable and compared to many historic gowns more comfortable. Much better than hoops!
@redstateforever

Yep . I'm not a fan of the hoops either . They look way too much fuss , and it was the colonial era so I'm surprised fashion wasnt streamlined in the late 1800's - I can't imagine how the english women who decided to wear 'proper' clothing - petticoats and a boned corset and overdress and all - in the 40 degree , extremely humid temparature of India's west coast felt .

I'd wager this isn't much more time than the average lady takes today--especially if they're going to work in an office. It takes me on average about 30-40 minutes at times shower, moisturize, dry my hair, dress, apply any kind of make-up, etc The major difference is that there is an option now to be more casual in our dress (and obviously no ladies maid). I do wish I could hide my hair in a cap some days for sure. :)

Justine is not her maid. She is her friends daughter that is living with her as her ward. Lucy would dress herself, and Justine is just there to help her and be her companion. Lucy and her family are not aristocrats we're they had servants do everything! They had servants but they were paid to help with chores and household duties. Remember in Pride and Prejudice, where they had servants but they were still lower income. Mr Bennett didn't do anything really but he was still considered a gentleman. They had means, but not a lot. That's why Mrs Bennett was so desperate to get her girls married to rich men. They couldn't continue to feed and clothe these girls as they got older and she wanted them to marry well so they could also help them. That's why Lizzie's friend was desperate to marry because she was a burden on her parents and she was getting older. Most girls were married by 18. She was in her 20's. That's why Justine was staying with Lucy because her own mother might not had the means to take care of her, so Justine would be grateful and help Lucy out as much as she could. Justine could have ended up a maid working in someone else house. Maids were almost always abused by other household servants or the homeowner and worked almost 16 hours a day. This is much better for Justine.

Most things are very well-reenacted and thought through. Just two questions (from one who mostly lives in the 18th c.)--1) My perception has always been that a lady would be seated for her maid to do her hair for her (although from what we've seen of Lucy, perhaps she just willfully does it herself, assuming no-one else can get it right...!): and 2) The bright yellow hair tie (and a couple of other very bright reds and turquoises in this and some of the other videos) look to be about two generations ahead of their time. Until analine dyes appeared later in the 19th c., those bright colors couldn't be fixed and so were either never used, or faded out very quickly (with the first wearing/washing). Madder red was never a true crimson, it always had a bit more orange in it, and had deeper brown undertones, and blues couldn't be fixed with greens except in the light aqua range; one or the other would bleed out. Such colors might even appear in magazine illustrations, but those pigments were fixed and sourced differently; they could not be replicated in fabric dyes until the 1870s or so. Oh, and--what's that delightful piano piece? I should recognize it but I'm drawing a blank.

If you download an app called Shazam you can search for it that way. For the computer you can download it as an extension to your browser. Good luck! :)

@@slickchick2267 Thanks, yes, I realized I could search for it, just wanted to encourage good citations of musical works (being a musician and historical researcher/writer, anong other things) to uphold their value as a 'voice in the conversation,' and not just 'background sound.'

Here I am this morning with sweatpants and my husband old baggy sweatshirt (that I love) lol - on - took me less than 5 minutes to get dressed. (I work at home so that is part of the reason)

I wish I were living in the 19th century. I'm so obsessed by it that I simply love reading novels based on this period. Well, I love the 19th century literature too, and not just some contemporaries based on it. But then, a lazy vixen that I am, I'd prolly be kicked back to the present time if I ever time-traveled to the olden times as this.

a very pleasant and nice video. A beautiful woman who is wearing her grey hair beautifully. Peaceful and entertaining at the same time. It's interesting to see how women used natural hygiene products in those days.

How did they keep those ribbons tied around their stockings from coming loose? It looks as though they would come untied very easily. And didn't the pins come out or stick them all the time?

The corset/stays probably stopped a lot of the pins from poking the torso. I imagine it's more of a hazard for people standing too close.
