A lesson in engine knock - a knackered Subaru Impreza WRX 

It's a sound which makes me cringe!

Which oil baffle do you think is best? Killer b?

How long did you have it before the knocking started?

my 2004 wrx is knocking i’m about to get it rebuilt how is it going for you

It's almost never worth rebuilding these. You can buy a whole other car now for the price of the rebuild.

You can use ron95 in a stock wrx, but sti needs Ron 98 from the factory. However, any of the cars will run safer and with higher fuel economy if you run 98 or higher. For remapped cars run the highest ron you can find.

However, I am planning to go to the tuners to remap it to run on RON95 to rule out any doubts (I'm prepared to sacrifice some BHP) because despite my GDA WRX being stock standard UK SPEC, The sticker on the Fuel Lid specifies using RON98 🤦‍♂️🤷‍♂️... Therefore to clear any confusion about this & to avoid damaging my engine, I plan to go to the tuners to formally tune it to run on RON95 🤲 Currently I use RON97 as that is the only highest RON fuel available in my country 🤲

Replacement engine needed due to worn bearings, which led to rod knock, which led to damaged piston rings, which led to damaged cylinders.

We swapped the engine with another, and it lived on!

The big end bearings were worn away and the rods were rattling and knocking like crazy 😂

Yes driven hard it's entire life. Unfortunately someone drove this one hard on cheap fuel

What about the rod, piston, and cylinder damage caused by the bearing 😂

And shortly after it became zero stroke 😂

He's gonna direct swap for another engine - depends what he can get for a good deal

Just cause you go forged dont mean you will be knock proof. Forged is only needed when you melt or break a rod or a piston or you want to boost stupid boost.

I think this was a lifetime of cheap fuel and an engine map which wasn't running proper knock control. It had knock alarms all over the place when we read it off

New engine. This one had bent con rods.

Well figure out which cylinder it is when we crack it open. Is #4 common?

It was big end bearing failure on 2 out of 4 cylinders, leading to bent rods

We dismantled the entire engine. It was multiple bearing failure.

If only we could just leave those engines stock we'd be fine, but we just can't leave them alone 😁

It was the bearings. 3 out of 4 bearings were worn through, and eventually one of the rods bent.
