Great gig in the sky, done by one girl but 3 needed to do it live. Her vocals were also completely improvised. They played her the music and told her to just do whatever. She thought it was to get to know the music, and if I’m not mistaken this was the first take.

I'm 62, and in '73 i snuck into my older brothers room while he, and my parents were gone. He had just come back from college with a killer stereo system, and a crate full of albums. I started off with pulling out 3 Yes albums, and after having my mind blown, I pulled out this album. I sat there listening on 4 speakers at 3000 watts, and by the time Great Gig was playing I had tears running down my face. Later that evening my brother returned with many friends, and with my parents gone for the week, they set up for a party. They all went outside and this older girl came through the living room with a bong, and asked my if I was coming out, i told her I had never smoked weed before, so she took me to my brothers room and got me high. About ten minutes later my brother appeared, and looked at us and said "WTF, you got my kid brother high?", to which she laughed and said yeah so what. What a Day In The Life that was! Now it's 2024 and it appears that I am witnessing a rebirth of the 70's all over again. Cheers to both of you, keep great music alive. Those were the days. FYI that was Claire Torry, a British singer, who is a white woman, but i do not disagree about Black women singers, I thought for a time that the singer was a black female singer as well.

@@theeJAYBUDshow yes the system that this guy is talking about was called quadraphonic sound!! In those mid-70s years there were quite a number of albums that were released with quadraphonic sound!! The 8-track tape was at the height of its popularity, and you could get the 8-track version of this album in QUAD (as it was called for short)! They actually had eight-track car tape decks that were in QUAD!!😮 I myself was only able to listen to this in HEADPHONES😢 and the effect was crazy enough but if you had a QUAD system and sat there in the middle of the four speakers it was an EXPERIENCE unlike any other!!!! 😮😮😮 I saw Pink Floyd in concert in 1975 and they had a QUAD setup in a stadium and I was down on the Field!!! During one of the songs they had the effects going around all four speakers and I literally thought that the stadium was a flying saucer getting ready to take off!!! 😮😮😮😮😮 Needless to say I was on a little bit MORE than JUST weed😅😅

The one thing you get wrong is it's not old head music it's actually from the future! The guys in Pink Floyd aren't from the Milky Way galaxy! They're from elsewhere! Here’s a breakdown of what this album means, because I felt like it. Speak to me/breathe: These sort of represent some sort of birth. Or rather life itself. The lyrics of breathe very much sound like someone talking to a child, telling them the importance of their life and how they should spend it. It’s a great intro to what this album actually means On the Run: this song is a bit weird. As a band, Pink Floyd had to travel a lot, so they wrote this song to basically illustrate their stress of traveling and the paranoia that comes with it. Hence the ending, where a pilot goes mad and crashes his plane. Time: this one is quite self explanatory. It’s about the passage of time and how scary it can be. Of course, there is some beauty in it, but the lyrics talking about how things are moving so fast that you can’t catch up, and your always closer and closer to death as time goes on. Although, the end of the song shows the beauty in the simple things of life, the fact that it replicates the instrumentation of Breathe in order to show such. Even if we may live existential lives, we may find something to keep us going. Great Gig In The Sky: a song about death. The beauty, and the grief of it. The song explains it in its own way. Money: Money is a song about greed and power. The way that people use money for their own benefit and how greed controls them. The fact that this song leads into Us And Them, a song about war, is interesting. The album is sort of implying that Greed causes war, which couldn’t be further from the truth. Us And Them: this song explores the pain and suffering of conflict and war. It explores how even though people fight on different sides, we’re really all just ordinary people. It shows the beauty and horror in conflict. Any Colour You Like: this song is sort of complicated. It’s sort of about how, the topics explored in the songs before it, war, greed, death, time etc, all lead into insanity, hence Brain Damage coming afterwards. The fact that the topics themselves are referred to as colors, is a parallel to the album cover, with the colors on the rainbow coming from the prism represent the topics covered in the album. Brain Damage: Literal insanity. The song is slightly inspired by the band’s founder, Syd Barret, who left the band in the 1960s after he battled with schizophrenia (do a reaction to Wish You Were Here if you wanna know how the band felt about him). The song in relation to the album though, sort of repeats what I said about Any Colour You Like. It’s showing what the insanity feels like, how crazy you’ve finally become after being exposed to all the stressors of life and society. Eclipse: The sun is eclipsed by the moon. In the end, everything is dark once you’ve lost your mind. there is no dark side of the moon, a matter of fact it’s all dark. You’re welcome! :)

Here's a DSOTM memory for you. Late 1970s, I'm a college freshman and I help a couple of my fraternity brothers with a weekend project they had concocted. They were engineering majors and knew a lot about circuit boards and electronics and they had hit the hardware store and Radio Shack and bought some wood, some stippled clear plastic sheet, several strings of colored Christmas tree lights, and a bunch of electronic stuff. We put together a big shadow box, painted black, with the lights attached in a random pattern in the back, and the stippled clear plastic on the front to scatter the light coming from inside. Then those engineering geniuses rigged the lights through circuitry they created so that the strings of lights would go on and off at different times and pulse in brightness with the music coming from their stereo. After a fruitful day's work, we hung their creation on the wall, downed a few brews until we had a good buzz going, and then turned out the lights and played Dark Side of the Moon and stared at the light show from the panel they'd made, pulsing and flaring and changing colors in unison with the music. It was awesome!

widely known as the greatest album ever, its been in the album charts for over 1000 weeks since its release, yes it would be great to experience that first time listening again and that is the beauty of watching real reactions of first timers, but it is an album that can be enjoyed no matter how many times you hear it, there is a saying that you don't need drugs to enjoy pink floyd but you do need pink floyd to enjoy the drug, not totally accurate as its true that pink floyd can be enjoyed straight or bent, a bit of advice that you will probably do one day anyway, is to go home, isolate yourself, turn off all distractions, put head phones on, relax, close your eyes and listen again, it will still blow you away straight or bent, enjoy the next lot of albums, they will blow you away too, as a 62 year old it was great watching your reaction to this great album by this talented group of 4 people, Roger Waters (lyricist and bass and vocals) , David Gilmour (guitars and vocals), Nick Mason (drums) and Richard Wright (keyboards and vocals), and by the way the female voice in the great gig in the sky isn't black, she is Clare torry.

Bent means a lot of things, today its slang for gay, but it is still used today in many places as high on drugs, here is two recent meanings (last 20 years) in the urban dictionary Bent The state of being when you are intoxicated from using both alcohol and marijuana. Get fucked up or trashed, to become inebriated to the point of disbelief, by drugs or alcohol.

As you get older this album will be more profound to you as you recognize the phases of your life from childhood, through your working career, and finally to you body (or mind) failing you and then your own mortality, its all there. "No one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun" has to be one of my favorite lyrics and perfectly described my realization that I was slow off the blocks moving from childhood (carefree self indulgence) into adulthood (responsibilities to others and myself).

When it was over, they all just looked around the room at each other and nodded that they had basically a religious experience.

I'll always remember the first time I smoked because of DSOTM. It was my first year at college and I was already a Pink Floyd superfan. We were on a walk hitting the penjamin, and when we came back, my weed sherpa put this album on so I could "really appreciate it"....I was blown away, and then during Us & Them, we hear some banging coming from outside the window.....across campus someone was shooting fireworks into the night sky! I sat and watched them go off the rest of the album, and so many of them were timed almost perfectly with the music. Core memory for sure. I'm almost 25 now, so I've never been able to see Pink Floyd play live. But I've gotten close by seeing Brit Floyd and The Australian Pink Floyd Show; the top Floyd tribute bands in the world. The Australian Pink Floyd Show is the most accurate from what I experienced, and they actually performed for and with David Gilmour (guitarist of Pink Floyd) for one of his birthday parties.

Take it from an old fart, this album will grow in meaning and impact the older you get. Let me put it to you this way... You'll grow old way before this album ever does. It is the definition of timeless. Classic. Couple of corrections... That IS a white lady singing on "Great 'Gig in the sky", Claire Tory. Also there were four members of Pink Floyd during this time. Four of the best musicians/ composers in rock - one of which is also recognized as one of the absolute best lyricists in rock, Roger Waters, their bassist and occasional lead vocalist. David Gilmour, the extraordinary lead guitarist, also does most of the lead vocals on Dark Side. That amazing sax player, Dick Parry, is not part of the band but he played on two of their albums... This one, and "Wish You Were Here" which I highly recommend you do next. Great reaction gentlemen!! 👍

I was 13 when this album came out. When I was 19, in the Navy, most women didn’t go in the military, and many men resented it, and women couldn’t speak out, or it would get worse. After crazy work days, I would go back to the barracks, in my room, shut the black out curtains, turn on my fiber optic, color changing lamp, and turn all the other lights out, and crank up Dark Side Of the Moon. Play it over and over, sometimes staring at that lamp, watching it slowly turn, and the colored light slowly flowing through each fiber and twinkling out at the end, bringing in new colors; all, until I would feel better. Some people, in the years since, thought I was a druggie, because I LOVE this album so much! I wasn’t, and you definitely couldn’t do drugs in the military, even if I wanted to. But you don’t need drugs with this album. It can transport you naturally. I love so much music, most kinds. But this one has always had my heart and saved my sanity.

I first started listening to pink Floyd about a year and a half ago in the summer of 2022, but I didn't really understand it and become a diehard fan until half a year ago during late July. I go down to my friends beach house for a few weeks every year during the summer. And one night at like 11 pm I decided just to cruise up and down all the roads in that little complex on an E-Scooter while listening to Dark Side of The Moon. It was truly memorizing but for the last two songs I decided to go down to the shore and enjoy them with the view of the open sea and crashing waves. And right after the final lyric in eclipse, in the middle of the fucking night, someone decided to set off a bunch of fireworks. un-fucking real I tell you, I could not believe the timing in that. oh yeah and it was a full moon glowing deep orange, just so psychedelic. Oh yeah and If you ever Do more Pink Floyd vids, I highly recommend you do Wish You Were Here before The Wall. Wish You Were Here is an album about the loss of their founding member of the band Syd Barret, and how The pressures of success and the music industry pushed him into the life of a reclose. But that story is something The Wall applies universally to all humans across the world, similarly to Messages about life in Dark Side Of The Moon. but hey that's just my recommendation.

I went to their concert in 1977 in Milwaukee WI. and it was the mosy amazing concert ever. It was when the Animals album came out and they floated a huge pig over 66000 people there and it blew up in the parking lot, we all thought it was a part of the show but it wasn't. I was close to the stage on the grass and people were lighting their lighters I was only 15 and I was so stoned I thought everyone had candles. Anyway I loved your reaction to this, brilliant. You are correct about how fast time goes. I feel like it was not that long ago but it was 47 years ago. thanks for sharing this.

I first heard this album my sophomore year of high school. Sister Christian was very progressive and used to play records during religion class. I remember sitting in my bedroom with headphones on listening to 'Obscured by Clouds' to drown out the chaos of my typically abusive family. I saw them on their Animals tour at the Oakland Coliseum in 77. First time I got stoned (crappy mexican weed full of seeds in those days). Left home at 18 shortly after... Your comment on listening to music being a spiritual experience is true.

I'm 70 now. I saw Floyd in concert in Mar. '73, around the same time of the release date for Dark Side. The concert included about a half dozen earlier releases plus the Dark Side album. Ticket prices? About 15 bucks!!! I rank the Dark Side concert and the Jethro Tull, Aqualung concert the best I've ever seen out of multitudes of concerts I've experienced. You guys are on quite the journey if you're going to deep dive into late 60's, early 70's music.

How to feel old 101: listen to young people talk about what it "must've been like" 50 whole years ago! 🤣 At least we got to experience the greatest era in music history first hand, though, eh? Seriously, Pink Floyd is one of the greatest bands that has ever been and I hope you keep listening to their music. They've influenced every genre of music that's come after them, including EDM and rap/hip hop. I agree with the other commenters who are suggesting you listen to Wish You Were Here, Animals, and The Wall, but I'd also add The Division Bell and Meddle to that list. Happy listening!! You're gonna get hooked. I myself don't go a day without listening to some Pink Floyd. Ever. 🖖🏽💗

I think you transported me back to the 70s like first I heard this with my friends except I wasn't high this time 🙂! Great reaction, you show that great music is timeless and universal. The lyrics for "Us and Them" is one of my favorites too.

I'm the same age as this album, and it's my favorite one. It reminds me of my brother who saw them live when they did the Animals tour. I catch the feels. Always starts off as bittersweet, but ends with a soft breath of cool night air on your face. I can't not think of my brother when I hear Pink Floyd. They both hold a very cherished place in my heart.

What you experienced was the greatest album ever made by the greatest band to step on stage or studio. Pretty sure this album spent 741 weeks on the charts. My journey with Pink Floyd started in the early 70's and the craziest thing about Pink Floyd music is no matter how many times l listen l hear something new. Next time listen to it good and high. The best would be good hash. You will need a few candles or a lava lamp would be awesome for ambience. Play it all without stopping by yourself. Kick back and enjoy the ride. Pink Floyd music is something to experience.

I think it depends on the experiences of each person, i’m only 20 and i discovered Dsotm when i finished high school, i missed most of it due to the pandemic, so the lyrics in “Time” always had an incredible weight and meaning for me, and i understand and know that they will hit even harder as i age, but that’s just me, i think these guys just aren’t in a moment of they’re lives where those lyrics hit hard.

Even after hearing this album for more than 35 years when I first heard it, it is such a succinct musical statement. The lyrical statements are clear and concise, and the music does such an incredible job with the ebb and flow of emotional impact. Also the musicality is incredible. 10/10 no notes. Glad that you guys were so effected by it. There’s a reason many people consider it one of the best albums ever, and why it was on the charts forever. 50 years later and it still hits like few albums do.

The basic most accurate description of what this album is about is simply the human condition. The album more than any other music ever made explains and encapsulates what it the human condition is and I what it is we all go through and deal with through our lives…. All our stresses, fears, everything…. You guys were right, this is one of the top “ I wish I could experience this for the first time again “ things in existence.

A lot of people don't react to them, but Wilco is sometimes called the "American Radiohead" and their albums A Ghost is Born and Yankee Hotel Foxtrot are fantastic. Also for Pink Floyd, I don't think anything really comes close to this one but if you can watch the Live at Pompeii performance, or the Wish You Were Here album.

This album only had one week as #1 in the billboards. However, it stayed in the top 200 from 1978 to 1988, 16 years. Last I check roughly 5 years ago, it was above the 950 week mark in the top 200. So I would imagine it topped 1000 weeks in the top 200 with its 50th anniversary edition. The closest 2nd is under 400 or was under 400 weeks from that same roughly 5 years ago.
