A Lightweight Disappointment - The Unfortunate Truth - NiteCore NC10000 Battery Bank Review

When it comes to ultralight battery banks, in my opinion the NiteCore NB10000 is hard to beat. With that being said, recently I discovered that NiteCore has another small form factor battery bank called the NC10000.
This one has one USB-C port and includes a built-in flash light.
Get ready folks, this product is a glitchy mess.

The reason they are using c ports is because they are thinking ahead, last year the European union voted for all companies to use one port that fits all devices and thats where the USB c comes in, takes effect at the end of next year, starting next year as well apple is switching all products to usb c to save cost instead of making different connections to different countries
@Gareth769

I challenge the concept of “thinking ahead”…. If rhe law goes into effect at the end of 2024, this product will not be fully universal until almost 2026….. thats three years for other company to surpass them and create a product superior in both performance and cost mesnwhile every battery pack on the market TODAY with a USB output IS universally compatible…. …. Honestly i would prefer an input and output jack and get rid of the dumb flash light….

this is really just an issue with this product imo. other nitecore products have more engineering behind them. they usually make custom products. this battery pack is 55$. they are probably using 2x 21700 batteries wrapped in a piece of plastic with a cheap PCB added in to control the lights, power button, and port. I think this is a quickly made budget offering since most of their other things are usually around 100$+ and are rather well made.

Luke, always love your reviews, and would be cool to see a review of the same products occasionally done with Susan next to you. That way we can have details from someone that’s read the entire manual. Mad respect, but no doubt that weird button double tap and three second hold time is lockout function as well to keep from inadvertently turning on the light while it’s in a pocket.

That's something I would throw in a backpack or the saddlebag on my bike. I don't use the flashlight that often and I do carry a dedicated flashlight on my bike, in my car, and when I hike/camp. The flashlight would be for emergency or niche use cases. As far as only USB-C, most everything I have these days is USB-C to USB-C, even my USB-A cords have USB-C adaptors on them so that won't be an issue for me. The selling point is the size and that's what I'm drawn too. I have plenty of powerbanks, but I'm always looking for high capacity in a smaller form factor.

I only buy things with USB-C Type ports. It's what everything will be soon because of regulations that all new stuff should all be the same. Nitecore stuff has always been pretty good to me so far. I use their chargers for my 18650 batteries. But for powerbanks, unless it's covered in a solar panel, it just isn't one I would consider. Currently I have a stack of them, all numbered- enough to keep them in the window charging on solar and cycle them to charge my phone and laptop and tablet.

I'd be a bit annoyed if it didn't have USB-A but there's options on cables that contain multiple outputs off of USB-C. There are also USB-C to A adapters so we're not entirely in trouble. Ultimately, having USB-C only might help with the IPX rating. I am starting to get annoyed by USB-C cables. Some perform wildly different and there's no real way to tell them apart. Some are Thunderbolt, others can be used for video, some can charge super fast, some can charge small devices, and so on.

One thing I find interesting is when you connect these devices to other power banks. Who charges who? I have some kWh banks that gets rather confused when I connect my laptop to them. Like "what am I supposed to do with this thing you just attached to my usb-c pd port?"
@PippetWhippet
@PippetWhippet Год назад
Usb a is one directional - the big square plug is always the output, the lightning/micro/mini end is always the input. With this device - usb c to usb c, then the two devices communicate and negotiate with each other. For example, I have a light with a power bank, it will charge my phone, but a power bank will always charge it - that’s because my phone always demands and never supplies power and the light has been programmed to demand power if something identifies itself as a battery is connected but supply power at all other times. Most devices that have a secondary function as a power bank work this way, and most devices that don’t have a power bank function always demand and never give power. Obviously you get oddball products that do strange things but they are fairly few and far between. Your laptop’s usb c probably has some dip switches inside that you can flick to modify the behaviour or maybe the ability to set it in bios. It could be that it knows exactly what to do but the powerbank can’t supply enough power to initiate charging.
@magnuslindgren9460
@magnuslindgren9460 Год назад
@@PippetWhippet Well, there is usb otg (usb on the go) 🙃 Basically, there is a negotiation taking place on the bus, who is going to be the host and who is not. There can be two host capable devices on the bus at the same time, but eventually, there can be only one. So who is it going to be? The one with the most power? How do you figure that out if both have a lot of power? Who is going to give up? Interesting isn't it. 🤔

Just to note, while the lack of a USB A is bad as far as functionality, the USB A has a max charging rate of 12W, so it would charge at a little over half the rate the battery bank is capable of. That is why many packs that are faster and faster chargers (45w), don't include a USB A anymore, because the speed of charging is not viable on that port.

coming from the power source, you only need one: C. it's the other end for the devices that matter: C, micro USB (pretty much just these two these days). very few devices have A on the receiving end anymore anyway. the only reason A is still on most banks is so people with old cords can still use them. But A is quickly dying out. the reason we "have so many" is literally because of people like you that still want A instead of upgrading....... you're literally the problem that you are complaining about.

It is heavy and has no lights, but it works really well and I can charge two devices at once if I need too (like if I need to charge my phone and my wife phone while we are out). Even after eight years it is still working strong and I don't see myself replacing it to save up on some space. Maybe later on but no with this device.

"I don't see myself replacing it to save up on some space." Good for you? you like heavy stuff that takes up space and don't wanna change. useless comment. no one put a gun to your head and said to buy this.

I'll stick with my Nitecore NB10000 Gen II. I own enough flashlights.

I got a NiteCore headlamp and was sorely disappointed with its horribly subpar battery life that they failed to mention. This company is a miss for me.

They follow the industry standard for headlamps when it comes to the battery life testing. Blame the industry standard, not Nitecore. The NU25 is probably one of the most used headlamps by thru hikers.

Glitchy operation and limited output port type makes it a non-starter. There are too many properly functioning alternative products that makes this NIteCore product a failure.

I don't like it as all the con points you mentioned are totally valid.

I personally hate battery packs with lights. Fifty lumens is basically useless. Just focus on power storage.

Only 1 USB port breaks all pros for me. Break the only port and it's useless. They could at least have two separate circuit ports for redundancy.

At this price I'd go Wuben C2 which is a much better flashlight and acts as a battery bank for less $$ with a 21700 in it. Then just buy a second 21700 battery...

seems like a defect in the board that switch is on, could translate to reduced overall longevity of the product as once that switch fails that thing is pretty much useless.

Someone pointed out, that it might be to ensure that it doesn´t turn on in your bag, if you press it twice. Since Luke didn´t talk about the product information we will never know

Stick to anker for batteries and nitecore headlamps

Agreed. Have an anker one, thinks its going strong now on the 3rd or 4th year. And it only cost be 50% of the nitecore.

Luke should know better than using combo devices. Use one for torch and use the other one for charging. Also USB-C is pretty much the standard now just move all your devices to it and you’ll be fine. Properly recycle the old ones of course

Thanks for the review Luke, you might want to think about testing true MaH output. Because if they are saying 10000 but only 6000 output that’s 60% efficiency at what amperage draw ? As for the type C unfortunately it’s just the future. Type A is very limited and basically out of date. Just a waste of space and cost with limited amperage. Like you said people can just buy a type C to old school device if they wish. 😊
@SeraphX2
@SeraphX2 Год назад
pretty much what i said. but amps are kinda fixed. that doesn't vary as much since the wires will dictate a max. voltage will change the most and if he wants more watts, volts have to go up and that is the biggest driving factor toward mAh loss since that conversion is where the heat loss is generated. he can't have his cake and eat it to, and i don't think he realizes that. especially considering he thinks the 6500 rating is before(?) the port? no, that's not how that works.

When they measure a battery they do it at 3.65 v. So when it's at 5v it's more like 6k mah. It's a tricky way power bank manufacturers operate.
@SeraphX2
@SeraphX2 Год назад
@@brantgoose i wouldn't call it tricky. they call it 10k because that's what the battery holds. but once again even if they said 6500 that would depend on the item drawing the power and how much voltage was allowed for that device. they have to pick some voltage or list values for every voltage. though I suppose the layman's math of thinking battery mAh divided by device mAh would be much closer to reality if they used ANY rated value over the full storage number.

if its usb c, it should include a usb a adapter. USB C is not fully adopted yet. I shouldn't have to spend extra for an adapter.
