Dave (the 36-year-old with the impressive beard) was raised almost completely sheltered from pop culture by his strict military family. He was homeschooled his entire life until he entered college. He legitimately has very little knowledge of music and bands from before 2000.
John (the guy in the dark on the right) has been a MUSIC LOVER since he was born in the 1960's. Problem is, he rarely knows or fully grasps the lyrics. Dave (on the left), on the other hand, has never heard or rarely overheard the music John chooses to play for him, but tends to take lyrics literally, sometimes to unexpected ends.
John remains in the dark both as a wry play on the situation but also because of legal issues causing his attorney to recommend maintaining a low profile.
We did not write nor do we own the Copyright for the song used in this Educational Video. This is a real, honest reaction to a song Dave have never consciously heard before and/or listened to with intent. Any "facts" offered by John "Doh" are based more on his remembrances than on any actual research. Please feel free to correct him. He loves it.

I wouldn't call myself a deadhead by any definition but I really like the album Workingman's Dead. I would be very interested in hearing Dave's interpretation of Dire Wolf.

I’m with you that’s my favorite Dead song from the opening riff I heard on the radio!

If you asked Robert Hunter what the lyrics mean, he'd answer "What do they mean to you?" Put another way he would say that of the three interpretations you gave, all of them would be correct! Check out the lyrics to "Ripple" If my words did glow with the gold of sunshine And my tunes were played on the harp unstrung Would you hear my voice come through the music Would you hold it near as it were your own? It's a hand-me-down, the thoughts are broken Perhaps they're better left unsung I don't know, don't really care Let there be songs to fill the air Ripple in still water When there is no pebble tossed Nor wind to blow Reach out your hand if your cup be empty If your cup is full may it be again Let it be known there is a fountain That was not made by the hands of men There is a road, no simple highway Between the dawn and the dark of night And if you go no one may follow That path is for your steps alone Ripple in still water When there is no pebble tossed Nor wind to blow You who choose to lead must follow But if you fall you fall alone If you should stand then who's to guide you? If I knew the way I would take you home

Big Deadhead here. Terrapin Station is a wonderful song I think you'd both like. I highly recommend the version from July 19, 1989 Alpine Valley, WI. Also, I'm going to see Bob Weir at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville tomorrow night. Time for music church! WOOHOO!

I was late to the Deadhead party, but I do like their music. Welcome aboard LD! I’m shocked, SHOCKED, you don’t know Casey Jones or Truckin’. We’ve got some exposing to do JD.

First The dead heads went to many shows because they never repeated songs nightly and played certain songs after year's of not playing them secondly the song was written by Robert hunter who was a masterful writer it's vague in meaning but like most songs of his they mean different things to different people try ripple for lyrics that will floor you

Robert Hunter was Jerry Garcia’s lyricist, a terrific poet. They have many colorful and also deep songs lyrically. I always loved Ripple and Scarlet Begonias, but there’s tons more. I think the hardest part for most people is they can’t get past the musical improvised jams they did live. I personally loved that aspect of them because you never knew where they could take the song, but others often called it aimless noodling.

"Truckin'" is good autobiographical start. "Ripple" for some deep lyrics. "Morning Dew" from Europe '72 for their live essence. And a few hundred other songs--a big appeal for following The Dead was that if you saw them four consecutive nights you wouldn't see a single song repeated plus each interpretation could be unique, so you never knew what you would get.

Hey guys, I love the channel! I just wanted to say the song you chose to introduce the Grateful Dead was not a good choice! They are an acquired taste with many different sounds, and many different types of music. Mostly there earlier music like everyone else.😊 i’d be glad to make a suggestion I just wish that wasn’t the first song you heard. They are a misunderstood group by many.✌️❤

Dave, when you mentioned the guy with a mouth full of pearly whites who thoughtlessly runs over everyone, I immediately thought of “Ken Wins” from Breaking Bad! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-IImhYDUYmzM.html

I love The Grateful Dead. If you want to see how well they can tell a story "Brown-Eyed Women", "Jack Straw" or "Bertha" would be a good place to start. I don't want to drag y'all too far down the hole.

Stagger Lee , Jack a roe. But The most interesting aspects of the hunter catalog lie' s in the way everyone of his lyrics leaves each Listener with their own interpretation of what it meaning they mean different things to different people, not to many songwriter's can pull that off except maybe Dylan

Woah there, brother Johnathan! The Dead will knock the powder out of your wig, be careful. You wouldn't want to slip and fall into a puddle of fun! I made a super *super* ultra entry-level early proto/prog metal playlist just for you, even though you won't listen. Back to the butter churning for thee!

You lunkhead! I had Sabbath Bloody Sabbath before you realized you had a willy. I've seen Iron Maiden and JP in concerts in the 80's and appreciate a handful of Scorpions tunes. But just as AWAKEN forced me to no longer appreciate my Kiss records, the more I explored progressive rock, the less I enjoyed metal. I will gently fall asleep tonight to your playlist, though, kind sir. - JD

Dave "Truckin" and "Casey Jones" represents what the Grateful Dead sounds like. Alabama Getaway was a faster jam. I'm NOT a Dead Head. 🤷‍♀

Boys and girls! Play nice. Brenda, what I think Thomasmoro61 was trying to say is that just as Rush is not defined by Tom Sawyer, Yes is not defined by Owner of a Lonely Heart, Rick Springfield is not defined by Jessie's Girl... (oh, wait, bad example on that last one) ... The Dead are typically not defined by their radio hits, at least not to a Deadhead. - JD
