Dave (the 36-year-old with the impressive beard) was raised almost completely sheltered from pop culture by his strict military family. He was homeschooled his entire life until he entered college. He legitimately has very little knowledge of music and bands from before 2000.
John (the guy in the dark on the right) has been a MUSIC LOVER since he was born in the 1960's. Problem is, he rarely knows or fully grasps the lyrics. Dave (on the left), on the other hand, has never heard or rarely overheard the music John chooses to play for him, but tends to take lyrics literally, sometimes to unexpected ends.
John remains in the dark both as a wry play on the situation but also because of legal issues causing his attorney to recommend maintaining a low profile.
We did not write nor do we own the Copyright for the song used in this Educational Video. This is a real, honest reaction to a song Dave have never consciously heard before and/or listened to with intent. Any "facts" offered by John "Doh" are based more on his remembrances than on any actual research. Please feel free to correct him. He loves it.

One of the greatest songs ever. Never forget, in 1982, they did have a war to keep their factories.

At 9:52 you felt that this song was not very complex. It was rarely performed live, because it was so complex.

"It sounded like the song that didn't want to end." Every Dire Straits record.

I've always liked this song. Just hearing it now, I realized how similar the organ part in "Walk of Life" is to this.

John picks some great music for you and us Dave - love the trivia intros and you actually "react" - I agree with Dave in that for me this has always just been a fun song and the guitar effects are what make it IMO along with the keyboard Dave mentions. MONSTER MASH indeed

I vote for calling us The Reactionaries. Thank you for getting to this one so soon after Money for Nothing. I loved the musical analysis (Doh with Knopfler's guitar and Dave mentioning the keys as playing a percussive role).

Love this song! One of my favorite Straits tunes. Such an interesting song lyrically and Marks guitar work is so cool and unusual and unique. Words are so cool and profound even for today's times with all the gaslighting and misinformation. Loaded with lyrics that have good meaning that end with a bang. "Two men say they're Jesus. One of them must be wrong. (Obviously!). There's a protest singer, he's singing a protest song. He says 'they wanna have a war, to keep their factories. They wanna have a war to keep us on our knees. They wanna have a war to stop us buying Japanese. They wanna have a war to stop Industrial Disease. They're pointing out the enemy, they keep you deaf and blind. They wanna sap your energy, incarcerate your mind.' " Sounds familiar. In the end we know which Jesus is the real one. One wants to abolish Monday mornings and Friday afternoons. What everyone wants to hear but impractical. The other ones out on hunger strike, he's dying by degrees. HOW COME JESUS GETS INDUSTRIAL DISEASE! Happy Easter guys!

Great reaction...again. Haven't heard it in 20 yrs. Have you heard their "Romeo & Juliet" or "Hand in Hand"? Very beautiful expressions in lyric & phrasing.

I used to love this song. I'd almost forgotten about it. I haven't heard it In years. Thanks for bringing it back to life in my mind.

This should remind you a bit of the more famous Dire Straits song, "Walk of Life" in tempo, arrangement, instrumental work (keyboards) and so on. This one is more obviously a social critique in the lyrics, of course, a biting and somewhat satirical tale made comical but meant to be serious in its message.

I would love it if you reacted to Dire Straits, Telegraph Road. It is a fantastic song, thematically connected to this one.

Just spitballing here, but it seems he's making a point that sociologists come up with clever names for things and governments use the fear associated with them to manipulate the populace. Using "industrial disease" to validate policy decisions they wanted anyway like war, taxes, power consolidation, etc.

I love anything from Mark Knopfler and Dire Straits, just for his guitar. In the lyrics he mentions "speakers corner". In the 90's a tv network in Canada called CityTV, had a program called "Speaker's Corner" where you could go on camera off the street and rant about anything you wanted and they would air it on the program. The show and a modest following for Toronto residence. In regards to a name for your audience, I was thinking something around how the Romans had to feed the Mob, to keep em entertained. Maybe theirs a Latin term for the mob. Also we are "The Watchers".

As a teenager in the 80s, I loved the clever, subversive lyrics wrapped in the skippy tune. Haven’t heard this in 20 years or more, and I agree with you that it’s a great protest song, though maybe the humor lessens the punch. I always snortle at “one of them must be wrong.”

Always loved this song. The video version is OK but I like this version. I love how the keyboard is very prominent in this song.

I saw Adam Ant during the Goody Two Shoes tour, and while I was basically dragged to it by my girlfriend at the time, it ranks in my top 10 concerts, most of which are Rush and Yes. FYI, I spent three years in England as a U.S. Air Force member, and the bit in the lyrics about Page Three refers to the daily "newspaper" The Sun. Every issue had a Page Three Girl, which was usually some topless photos of some very lovely ladies. A mid to late '80's pop star, Samantha Fox, got her start there, and actually had a couple of hits, most notable was "Naughty Girls Need Love Too".

The song is fun and for that reason it clashes so much with the lyrics. In the end though of the songs on the entire album it is my least favorite. Telgraph Road and Private Investigations are much more interesting musically and lyrically.

I think we've already sort of adopted Fellow Humans. It fits Dave's agenda to improve the human race by shaming corporations and politicians into good behavior for the sake of Fellow Humans. - JD
