“the more you cheer me on the more he screams” god that line hurt. I came into this video excited to see another one of Joel’s fun sketches and was not mentally prepared for the emotions that it dragged up. This is such a hard hitting topic one that isn’t covered very well in a lot of media. I appreciate how realistic this is, especially with how the guy responded to her struggles. Forced positivity, then realization settles in that he can’t fix it. Depression/burn out can be messily shown and usually it’s all fixed because the friend says “I’m here for you!” But, I appreciate the realism in this. It’s a hard battle to win and communication is key.

@Nonaya Bidness I dunno, I connect a ton to it. Like, the way she describes the man screaming... it's a little incoherent, and you can read that as a little humorous but... it's still a problem she's dealing with. And he acts real emotion with it. And that template, that pattern where your friends and loved ones are communicating their struggles, and they don't really make sense to you, but you be there for them anyways, because they are something good in your life. That's something I find meaningful. I really really like this series.

Feel myself walking around the house like that, thinking of those conversations, or ironically getting her water all the time just like this. Same happened to me brother. I was dating a girl, she moved across the country, we tried dating long distance, she broke up with me. I thought it was the distance... I moved across to country, met up with her and found out she actually just lost interest. It's so hard to be on this side of the break up. I've been trying to make sense of it. What I've come up with is: I tremendously respect her for following through with her feelings and letting me go rather than allowing me drag her around in a one sided relationship. I think she made the right choice, initiating and following through with a break up can be very hard. This is only something I've recently learned. I can continue to love her, and probably will forever, but that doesn't mean that I can't love someone else. Regadless of my feelings for her, it's pointless to waste energy trying to win her back or holding myself back from moving on. And lastly, In the moment, every person I've been with I think is the best person I'll ever be with.. then months (or more likely years) later I somehow find someone I feel is even better! This moment sucks.. but I'm telling myself I'll look back at this day and laugh about how hopeless I felt. I hope something here helps you man. And in the end, when you feel like you have no other options and your emotional back is against the wall, you might try praying to God/spirit guides/the universe/etc... Pray that your lonely mind can be clear, or for a rebound, or to meet someone who loves you again. Worth a shot and at the very least, vocalizing your honest deep down needs is valuable

I relate to the “old man screaming in your face” thing so much. Not just because I feel that way, but because I’m certain that my ex-wife did towards the end of our marriage when she sank into her deepest depression. And despite all my efforts to help, wracking my brain in my alone time trying to figure out some way to stop the screaming old man, there was no changing the final outcome. We divorced after 8 years together, just last year. We met in high school. I moved across the country from her after it was all said and done, I couldn’t stand to look at my hometown anymore. It wasn’t cinematic by any means. There was no infidelity, no big dramatic reasoning behind it all. She simply fell out of love with me over time, and I had no idea it was even happening until it was too late. I foolishly thought that despite her depression, she would always love me. 8 years of amazing memories created, laughing, tears, regarding her family as a second family of my own, plans of children, sleeping every night in the same bed, graduating high school and college together, losing loved ones and supporting each other, traveling the world together, reveling in accomplishment and experiencing tragedy together, just gone in the blink of an eye. She waited until I was out of state visiting family to do it. It was so nonchalant, simply a very brief FaceTime where she put it very bluntly: “I think I feel better by myself.”... “There was nothing you could have done differently. You were a great husband. I can’t explain it.”... And that was that. It was as if all the color in the world disappeared at that moment. Everything has been grayscale since. I’ll never truly wrap my head around it. I’ve felt dead inside ever since. Hoping that I can smile again some day and accept what happened. I built my life around her and she was my everything. My dad tried to warn me multiple times not to make another person the focus of my life. I should have listened to him. I feel like I irreversibly ruined myself. As if my conjoined twin withered away and died and I’m trying to drag the dead half around with me now. This definitely wasn’t how I envisioned my late twenties going. It doesn’t feel like a chapter in my life ended, it feels like the entire book slammed shut. Feels like there is simply nothing left to read. The story is over. You always either make me laugh or make me introspective. I appreciate it either way. Even pulling what I just typed out of my head makes me feel a bit better, despite how hopeless I feel. Thanks Joel, and I hope things are going great for you. So happy to see how far you’ve come.

I really like that she stayed in the end. In my view, it shows the complexity of relationships. Sometimes there are difficult conversations where it all seems to lead to the same outcome; breaking up. But often love consists of recognising and acknowledging your own individual battles and struggles. While talking about them is important, it doesn't necessarily mean the partner is part of the 'problem' or 'solution'. I think the end of the video shows that the one talking about the screaming man acknowledges that she doesn't want to lose her partner. And when that feeling is mutual, they can find out ways to give each other space (in both mental or physical sense) to work on themselves and fight their own psychological battles. In that way, the feeling of mutual trust can become very strong.

@NomSauce
@NomSauce 2 года назад
@@TheCatnipCinema The old man doesn't have to be anxiety, depression or whatever the others mentioned. That's kind of the point of it and why the description is so "vague" or general. It's because there's a million different things in life that can stand in your way, that cause you great stress, anger, sadness or whatever the emotion/problem is. The old man represents every possible struggle there is, the reason why Joel isn't mentioning anything specific here because the same result the skit is showing, can happen no matter the root cause/issue. For one person it can be anxiety, for another it can be depression and for someone else it could be suicidal tendencies. What matters is that the old man is a battle that the person themselves have to win, you can receieve support and it helps. But in the end, the ability to remove the screaming comes internally, because internally is where its screaming in the first place. Basically the reason the suffering character is saying that the old man screams louder the more Joel is supporting. Is because the more support they receive, the less they grow and so the more vulnerable they become to the screaming, turning even more dependant on Joel. Sometimes you can't grow when your support is supporting you too much, kind of how you can't learn to ride a 2-wheel bike if you never remove the support wheels. There's nothing inherently wrong with the wheels, they're doing what they're supposed to do, if anything they're too good. The wheels themselves are not at fault, it's the person using the wheels, they're too afraid to move forwards using their own balance. This is where you can start having spiraling, negative thought loops of self-hatred, shame and severe loss of confidence. The person will feel terrible for needing support wheels in the first place, "I'm so stupid" "I'm so pathetic", which in turn makes it harder to even remove the wheels in the first place. "What if I fail?" "What if everyone will see what a failure I am?" "What if I can't make it?" "What if I fall so hard I can't get back up". They will then proceed to loop that thought into shameful thinking, "I'm scared to remove the wheels because I'm such a weak coward, I won't amount to anything". Their inability to remove the wheels, the fear, loops back into the initial thoughts of feeling pathetic etc, each empowering the next thought in the spiral. This one of many common pitfalls that causes people to stay in toxic/abusive relationships, no matter if it's a partner, parents, friend or boss/work etc. Paraphrasing Joel's character "It's always the wrong place the wrong time", the old man unfortunately does represent that kind of issue. It's the classic, it's not you it's me, except it's the real deal. Something that happens a looot between ages of 20-35, not saying it's weird outside of that range, just how much more common it is. Joel hasn't done anything directly wrong, he's doing the right thing, but it's in the wrong place at the wrong time, or it can be the right place at the wrong time and vice versa. It's a complex internal struggle that varies per individual, hence why the vague description of "Old man screaming". Because the overall feeling and or result is the same.

Beautiful, Joel. I think most people can relate to this. Slowly falling out of love is one of the worst things to go through, at least with explosive breakups you can look back and think "this. This is why it ended, these moments right here". But a slow dissolution of a relationship is the hardest, because you're always left wondering what happened, what you did, what you _could've_ done. Even though often there's nothing anyone could do, we still torture ourselves with the possibility. I love your films, they are so uniquely human. I fully believe someday you'll have all the recognition as a filmmaker you deserve. One of the best of this generation.

I actually had a trip like that once, after hundreds and hundreds of dmt trips as well as lsd, mushrooms mescaline and nbomes, i took two mystery tabs late at night with some friends, within 20 minutes it kicked in and after an hour we were all higher than we've ever been in our whole lives and they have done dmt with me as well, and they were on one tab i was on 2, we got trapped in a time loop, reality broke apart and i lived a dozen lives all at the same time in different time periods, one second i was in the body of my 6 yo self and grew into my current body slowly and saw every single decision ive ever made as i grew, we all morphed into one being and were literally screaming telepathically, but near the end i saw my friends grandfather who was in the next room when i closed my eyes i saw his face made of neon colors with like a speech bubble that looked like a hotel sign that said "trippin sack on 23rd Street!" And heard him say that over and over again for like an hour, YOURE TRIPPIN SACK ON 23RD STREET! so i really did have an old man screaming in my face during a trip. Didn't do any tabs for over a year after that experience.

I have recently started observing that generally characters in Joel's videos have a disconnect in their communication, they will repeat things to clarify, try to give context afterwards in an awkward manner, among other things. These things are much more realistic, and they give a very different feel to these videos, unmatched by anything else, except like actual vlogs, but with awkward pauses and misunderstandings.

Emotions hardly make any sense, sometimes I get into a funk and I feel like gf Joel a lot. My fiancé sticks by my side and always is understanding and helps me see past the screaming old man and beat him up lol. This hit home Joel, you’re brilliant. Stuff’s hard, it felt like they both were in a valley of confusion and a level of emotional distress. Maybe I am projecting. It’s hard to see and fix the issue the other is dealing with, especially when you both are in the same boat and unable to articulate nor understand it in a straightforward way… sometimes people break up because of it. Sometimes people grow stronger with it. My fiancé and I decide to grow together with our challenges, that’s how it works for us. Love never leaves, but sometimes I fall into a depression (medical/chemical, not due to my situation or environment) and it’s hard to see past the fog over my eyes and how the world loses all color. His anxiety hurts him, too. In our pain it can be difficult to connect, we may push away each other or grow distant because we don’t want to be burdens or we get frustrated. In the end, though, I find myself in his arms under a blanket playing animal crossing and fortnite. Sometimes that’s all I need, sometimes it’s all he needs. It’s silly but somehow I feel so connected when we do that. Even in a perfect relationship people will lose feelings of joy or giddiness, and they will eventually come back. Love is the continuous self-sacrificing of the self for the other. A wanting of good for the other. Even when we are in the pits of mental anguish, we are always there for each other until we get back up that hill. And even then we stay there with each other. Ah, I’m sorry this went on so long… thank you for reading this far, I wish you the best in life and love, God bless all of y’all. 💕

I'm not nearly deep enough to try and understand what this means. I tend to take things literally, which is why I also have a hard time explaining my own love to someone. The old man is anything that is in the way, I know you're there, I can see you, I can see you trying to move him, I can hear you cheering me on, but the old man is always there, he's always screaming at me, always in my face. The old man is anything, anxiety, depression, responsibilities, hobbies, other friends. I don't think the screaming has to be indicative that the old man is a bad thing, but just that he's right there and loud and you can't ignore it. The response is so basic from Joel but means so much. You're here, and I'm happy. I might be behind the old man, but I'm *Always* there. He might be in the way, but he's in the way of you too. And I'm still here. I'm still behind the old man. I still see you, can you still see me? I hope so, because I never want to stop seeing you. However loud, obnoxious, in the way, obtrusive, this guy is, I'm still here.
@chillcreep4926
@chillcreep4926 2 года назад
This is it. I was trying to explain it to myself but couldn't quite figure it out. I wondered why Joel didn't finish what felt like a goodbye - "do you know how happy I was that I found you?" It wasn't a goodbye. It was just appreciation, and the statement of hope on its own: I know I can't fix this for you, but I'm still going to be here. I've had this moment when I try to explain my own issues and responsibilities to people. It makes me feel terrible - culture says love fixes everything, right? But it doesn't. The "you can't save me" speech. I have a tendency to get involved with people who have a lot of issues themselves - so there's me, the old man screaming in my face, the old man screaming in their face, and them. All of us trying to hold hands and get along. And yeah, maybe that's enough to end a relationship in its early stages. But I'm glad Joel has Joel to get them through, and I hope they come through better for it. Be excellent to each other.

I love that you don't know if she left him or not until you see her hand on the last scene. There is a really good story behind the film although it feels like it's a simple one. You are held constantly on the verge of them breaking up and the fact that there is nothing the male character can do to fix the situation makes you feel so weak. When she said "the more you cheer me on, the more he keeps screaming" she's really saying "maybe we should break up" without saying it. So they just sleep it off and see if their love is strong enough to handle this. This wasn't just a gig for Joel showing off his acting skills, it was damn story.

When she came by my house yesterday to drop my stuff off with her best friend, I asked my ex if she was going to give me the chance to talk to her for a minute about everything that’s going on. And she said no we kind of want to get going, maybe next time. I asked her if there was going to be a next time. She said maybe, closed the door, and drove off.
