Lucas Simpson, the sax soloist, went on to be on American Ninja Warrior around age 21, and is now a music teacher.

Awsome....dis proving the band geek stereotype . That is all are not , however some wear the band geek label with pride . Was not a Ninja but was an Eagle Scout myself. In College I was Bass Trombone and remember playing this piece. Viva 1975.

A tune that opens with a walking bass always gets my attention. The bassist does a VERY nice job. VERY nice. His facial expressions suggest extreme nonchalance but his ears, brain, and hands get the job done perfectly. If I ever meet him I'd be happy to buy him a drink.

@@stefanalexanderlungu1503 🙂😐😎🤪😇 That's a very good question. I went to college with some balding middle aged men way back in the fifties/sixties and now I'm an OLD man but damn I LIKE this band.

Yes, indeed, a well-played trombone can give you a thrill. This is a VERY good college band.

Two years later and this just does NOT get old. The more you listen, the more things you hear; the beginning and ending of phrases, the little licks from the drummer, and much more.

As a Big Band Player and Arranger for over 50 years, I have to say this band shows great technical skill and swing feel for such young musicians. It's exciting to see/hear the great big band genre live on through our youth.
@nemo227
@nemo227 5 лет назад
Kirk Schmidt . . . I've ALWAYS figured that arrangers were essential to the success of a tune. There have been tunes that didn't get much attention until a good arranger put all the parts together the best way, the correct way, the way that changed a so-so tune into a tune that got peoples attention.

June 19, 2020 and I just spent almost an hour previewing/"auditioning" more than a dozen youtube videos of other bands, both professional, semi-pro, college, high school, etc. This recording stands above the others in these categories: 1. Audio quality (balance, clarity, dynamics), 2. Arrangements, 3. Intro (best bass intro here), 4. section work, 5. solos. Damn, I like this version BETTER than Kenton's.

@nemo227
@nemo227 2 года назад
@@seanh9190 & @Tom Kochmann I'll bet that Stan Kenton and his trombone section + his whole band would have enjoyed this performance. BTW, the first instrument I took lessons with was the school's trombone, Lakeside, CA elementary school, about 1948. I had only a few lessons when they took away the trombone because they needed it for a boy who actually played in the school band. 😩 It's okay because now I have my own string bass and got PAID to play it in the fifties, sixties, seventies. 😁

me too honestly. the first bone part is what won me my seat as lead and is super sentimental for me. my favorite kenton recording is the redlands university one but this one... this one beats it. for me the tempo is a big part too, its a little slower than the other recording but just has so much attitude. absolutely amazing.
@nemo227
@nemo227 2 года назад
@@part1cle137 I've concluded that band director, Chris Bruya, must be extraordinary because this band sounds like it's composed of virtuoso players but I don't think that is possible. Some teachers can bring out the maximum ability from students. He must be such a teacher. I looked him up on the internet and his accomplishments are extremely good. BTW, have you posted any of your performances on youtube?

I am from the Rochester, N.Y. and UofRochester, Eastman School of music under the leadership of Chuck Mangione. College jazz bands like this one keep the wonderful musical traditions of the big bands of the 40's.- 60's. Stan Kenton among the big music with lots of Trombone. X wife attended a music school in upstate N.Y. /Staying at the fraternity house one weekend and the two a.m. jam session of college students playing jazz.

Holy Artistry In Rhythm! Best College Band I’ve heard since a summer camp at IU. The kids worked with different groups split up , Stan wanted to keep Big Band music going I think his influence is playing in Band 1 here although I get tickled at Bryson ‘s body movements... did I spell his last right he’s knows how to keep it tight & together . These are College kids ? Hanna swings along with the soloists playing here , I heard her on Freckle Face 👏👏👏👍👍👍👍👍👍
