The Miller's Son is just brilliant. LOVE IT. One of my favorite Sondheim songs ever. He can really write great songs for women, I'm thinking about Liasons, I'm Still Here, Ladies Who Lunch...

Ugh, the way her voice cracked on that final "and I..." was PERFECTION!!!
@Averia89

Nope, go to 4:07 and listen again. She clearly sings "passing by," and then she cracked on "and I shall marry the miller's son." Nice try though.

Sondheim has such a consistency with the orchestration in most of his shows, like with the miller's son you can hear similarities to sweeney todd, but they're all unique in their own way 💜 👏 this song is incredible.
@vinista256

The orchestration was actually done by Jonathan Tunick, a favorite Sondheim collaborator and one of the best in the business (he’s an EGOT).

3:56 and 4:06 are some of the reasons musicals can sound transcendent. Man... Sondheim was a genius, and so was this performer

Susan's wonderful, but I like Lee Ann Larkin's interpretation better. I saw her on Broadway and she was able to find the harmony between the fun frivolousness on Petra's surface, and the sadness and lack of control over the inevitability of her life. She can fantasize all she wants but she knows that her future is a quiet predictably desperate life. It was incredibly erie watching her because you felt elation at the same time you felt a tightness in your gut. I

That may be. OTOH, the miller's son may very well be the one she really wants, which is a less predictable point. She knows it's what she'll likely fall into, but she can still make the most of things and have a basically happy life, knowing that investing too much into your disappointment can rob you of the happiness you can still have--a mistake I've made in my own life over and over again.

I didn't see it on Broadway, but I did listen to her (Larkin) on the cast album several times. Maybe it was different live. Although it was well performed, it felt kind of choppy, and I kept getting distracted by the varied placement of her vowels. To each their own, but I think Susan Terry's version has a better flow, and I prefer the joyousness; Yes, things could be better, but even those dreams have their drawbacks, and eventually she WILL pin her hat on a nice piece of property, and UNTIL THEN, she's going to enjoy her life.

I always feel scared for the singer because the very first Petra, Garn Stephens, was replaced during out of town tryouts because she couldn’t sing it.

@@cherie..cherry In the musical’s 1973 premiere production, the actress playing this role was replaced just prior to opening. It’s a difficult song, and she wasn’t doing it to the director’s satisfaction. So whenever this song happens in “A Little Night Music,” I brace myself and think, “Oh god, this is the hard one! GOOD LUCK!!”

I love Sara as well and does a great rendition of the song as well, but I think that when it comes to singing, besides having good technique, what makes a performance memorable also having the ability to tell the story. Technique, connection, storytelling ability.

I watched Sara Ramirez's performance (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-gi8vabJUeIM.html) and it's a very interesting comparison. Sara is a powerhouse performer and she makes the song her own in ways which she sells. Some of those ways, I buy…others, not so much. It's a "Lady of the Lake" "Miller's Son," with less subtlety and nuances than I think the music and lyrics call for. Night Music is a very specific style: Sondheim does operetta - and I love that Susan Terry trusts the material and sells it with coy understatement, more so than Ramirez's broader take on it.
