Bark River's Aurora Scandi in Cru-Wear steel has been on my radar for over a year. Now that it was available in a single run, I had to snatch one! Just in time for my birthday on Oct 3. Take a look at this one with Texas Fencepost handle scales with me!

Wow. What a wonderful knife. I've wanted one for years, but haven't yet. But your new one in scandi with the wood handle is stunning. You've re-ignited the flame inside me. The Aurora is truly a fabulous all-purpose field knife. Adding in the CruWear didn't hurt one bit. Probably my favorite. I'll be interested to find out what you think of the scandi grind compared to the full convex ... as well as the feel of the knife in your hand compared to the bone. In the meantime, happy birthday partner. And enjoy the new knife.

Wow that’s gorgeous!! I have an Aurora scandi in CPM-MagnaCut on Pre-order, and can’t wait to finally get it in my hands out in the woods!!! I have 4 Bark Rivers and LOVE them ALL, but I’ve NEVER had or used one in ANY Scandi versions, so I’m very excited for that and the NEW MagnaCut steel of course!

well, how did the scandi experiance go then?
@shadeshiest22
@shadeshiest22 Год назад
@@rudysdream great! I find it’s a lot easier to strop in the field with the smaller scandi-vex grind line, the ONLY NEGATIVE is I got the unpolished plain micarta version(another first) and thought it would be more grippy but it’s the complete opposite when it gets a lil palm sweat going in the summer it gets slicker for some reason. Think I should scrape up the handle on it maybe it will do better… BTW if you are a Bark River fan I JUST THIS MINUTE got notification email that my Bravo 1 LT pre-order in MagnaCut is in from DLT, so that means sometime/day this week they will be dropping a bunch for sale(probably tomorrow)!!!

Camel bone is the heaviest material bark river uses for their knife handles. I found this out after I bought a BR Mini Canadian with camel bone scales and was also blown away with how heavy it was so did a little research on it. It is a very cool looking material, and that mini Canadian special was the very first bark river to use 3V steel. I just bought the Aurora Scandi in 3v with matte green canvas micarta.

That's a beautiful one. If consistency in handle scales is the main concern I suspect the synthetic materials (micarta, G10, suretouch) is the right choice, the natural materials are going to have their quirks.

Sharpness is kind of a moot thing past a certain point. Because as soon as you use a super fine knife it dulls. They probably gave the edge enough beef/left it a little blunt to give it a more forgiving/linear wear pattern if that makes any sense
@JustCantGetRight
@JustCantGetRight 2 года назад
you're entirely right. I agree that anything sharper than "working sharp" is not needed. At the same time, if you can still have it at no inconvenience, why not? CruWear is a pretty special steel, it'll hold an edge through all kinds of (reasonable) use for a long time.

Mine came with uneven bevels at the tip and I gotta admit… I’m a lil’ miffed about that. Shouldn’t have to be doing fine work on a knife that I paid over $350 for. That, and it came with what LOOKS like a secondary v-edge? Like… pardon me… but if you advertise it as a Scandi/Scandivex grind… then *SHOULDN’T IT BE A SCANDI/SCANDI-VEX GRIND???*

I love bark river’s designs, but in my opinion the fit and finish issues are unacceptable considering the price. I watched a video tour of the bark river facility where Mike Stewart explains that every knife is checked for quality control issues each time it is passed to the next worker. According to him, if they spot any issues, the knife goes right back to the previous station to be fixed. This means every knife is checked at least 7 times. Well, if that were true it would be impossible for their knives to leave the shop with the issues that I’ve encountered. Either he is lying, or every single worker is incompetent (I’m more inclined to think the former and am doubtful of the latter). I have only ever encountered cosmetic issues, so the function of the knife is unaffected, but for the price I expect better. By comparison, every single knife that I’ve bought from LT Wright is near flawless, so it’s certainly possible.
@JustCantGetRight
@JustCantGetRight 2 года назад
Yup, I agree that as long as there are uneven grinds they should not hear the end of complaints about them. Mike's answer is always that they don't check for uneven grinds because they don't affect performance, it's simply something they do not do. To be fair, slightly uneven grinds in handmade knives are not a rare thing at all, but then you bring up L.T. Wright's knives, and the fact that they all seem to be perfect, that argument goes out the window. Now, about this particular Aurora Scandi, if you look closely, it's about 1cm shorter than the standard Aurora and has a slightly rounder belly... yup, it 100% looks like the knife was dropped and was re-tipped. Yes, the knife is still awesome, but that's not the kind of discovery one likes to make.

Do you know anything about Helle? Was thinking of getting a new bushcrafter they seem legit?
@JustCantGetRight
@JustCantGetRight 2 года назад
I have a Helle Torodd. It's quite nicely crafted but mine had a pretty uneven grind out of the box to the point where edge stability suffered. I really liked how light it was for a handmade knife and how aside from that grind, the fit and finish of both the knife and the sheath was stellar. At the end of the day, it ended up being more of a shower rather than a user for me since it doesn't do anything my Mora companion can't (since it's effectively a handmade version of that knife), except for a lot more money. I think that for handmade knives at that price Helle making some awesome tools, but ultimately, it's hard to beat what LT Wright is doing for very similar money.
