Up until around 1991 If Ocean licensed it I was getting it on either Speccy. C64 or Amiga (I changed systems quite rapidly back then (thankfully Highlander was an exception - never had it). I remember having Robocop on the speccy +2 and LOVING it (one of my fave games of all time happens to be for my favourite movie of all time) and despite warnings from friends to avoid the C64 version when I moved to the reliable old grey bread bin I went and got it. Result? Driving myself to rage insanity being unable to complete the drug factory level. By the way did anyone prefer Superchamps on Channel 4 to Run The Guantlet?

Interesting point about Robocop. Ocean Software managed to nab the licence so quickly that Data East had to licence the rights to make the game from Ocean (Hence why there is an Ocean reference in the arcade game). But then Data East designed and released the game and Ocean simply adapted that design to the home computers, taking out most of the hard work of design. How smart and cheeky was that??? :D

I worked on the SNES version of Mission Impossible. It was like Flashback. Rotoscoped sprites. It was being developed at Merit Studios. There was a top down speed boat section which used the Micro machines engine. All the sprites for the overhead section were pre rendered . I just remember some big arguments and apparently someone walked out with a hard drive.

Also worth mentioning that Lothar Matthaus: Die Interaktive Fusball Simulation it's just the German title of European Champions! (Which was also released as Olympique De Marseille Super Football in France and I believe it also got a different licensed title in Italy). And what most people fail to mention, this is a SERIES of Football games, this is the sequel to the much beloved Emlyn Hughes International Soccer, and it got another sequel under the name of Wembley International Soccer. European Champions is IMO the most underrated football game on Amiga (maybe even more than Sierra Soccer?). This game has 2 camera options, 3 different ways to pass/shoot the ball, some real tight controls, up to 1 minute replays.... and it played incredibly well and it was really fun to play. I'm always surprised how this game barely gets any love while Emlyn Hughes International Soccer is always very well rated since this is basically an EVOLUTION of Emlyn Hughes International Soccer. It was done by the very same coder and if you put the Amiga version of Emlyn Hughes International Soccer side by side with European Champions, you'll see it has basically the same sound effects and a lot of the graphics are similar too.

I had Robocop on the Spectrum +3 and remember clearly that one of the faces you had to match on one of the stages wouldn’t accept the correct match. So your only way to pass that stage was if you were lucky enough to get asked to match one of the faces that did accept the correct match properly

Nah, I finished it thousands of times, it's one of the easiest games going. But there are a couple of photofit pieces that differ only by about two pixels so they can look right but not work. Once you learn how to spot them though the photofit is trivial to complete.

Fabulous video! As an 80’s gamer I always felt that Ocean were more “premier” due to their box art, bigger budgets and huge multi page adverts in all the mags (Zzap 64 was always filled with glossy ads for the latest movie tie-in). The biggest thing for me was when “Bat-mania” kicked in and the licensed movie game was storming (especially on Amiga!), and suddenly Ocean seemed to be getting all the big coin op conversions and cool licenses….keep these vids coming chap, they are such a pleasure to watch!

Special mention too, for the Platoon C64 soundtrack. Stunning, dark, atmospheric and each level is best represented with ideal fitted sounds. The "Tunnels" level in particular, is stunning. The game all the same was bastard hard. It was nigh on impossible to make out the tripwires that constantly caught you out as you tried to memorize the maze like jungle in level 1.

I have very fond nostalgic memories of the Gameboy version of Navy Seals. Admittedly this is largely because of the absolutely kickass title music, which I could hear you using in the background even when you were discussing the other versions. It's one of the best bits of music on the Gameboy, which is actually quite an accomplishment given what wonders some developers were able to accomplish with that tiny sound chip.

Great video! The classic Ocean licenced game formula (when done well) as you say starting from Platoon onwards was arguably the perfect way to adapt a movie: take three to four iconic scenes from the film, turn them into 'mini-games', and you're sweet. Growing up I always knew what I was getting from an Ocean licenced title would be variety. That isn't to say they could do no wrong, obvs the mini-games had to be fun, but I knew if I hated one part of the game maybe one of the other parts would still be fun. My top would be the driving section in the Amiga/ST version of Batman The Movie -- the worst part for me was having to play through the platform/run and gun level to get to it. Not that the platform level was bad, but a non-linear ability to skip to the car bit without cheat codes would be welcome! But yeah. Always knew when you bought an Ocean Software licenced game you were basically buying 3 or 4 individual games combined under one licence, really.

Thoroughly enjoyable video again Kim! Very nice to get a complete picture of the licensing history of Ocean, as that was seemingly their forte back in the 80s at least. Maybe the word "seemingly" should be emphasized, as it was almost always hit and miss for various reasons and releasing unfinished games is indeed beyond shameful but hey, there were gems too! And they did some pretty fine Gameboy titles indeed, like the Super Hunchback game they made for the system, which is very competently programmed.

By licensing games, you don't have to spend nearly as much money selling a game through marketing since the property itself is doing that for you. The sad thing is that you're locked into the property before your first idea is put on paper to adapt it. "Hey, we just scored the license to Three Men and a Baby, we need you to make a game based on it in 12 weeks. Thanks!"

Extremely thorough, well made and enjoyable video, thanks for sharing, brought back some great nostalgia vibes. Will deffo be checking out some of your other videos for sure. Just a note about waterworld (The movie) It wasn't one of the biggest flops of all time, it was actually successful and eventually made a decent profit, a lot of people think it was a huge flop but it actually wasn't. It went massively over budget, became the most expensive film ever made at the time, had a ton of production problems and wasn't the gargantuan smash hit they wanted it to be, it took an age to recoup it's budget and marketing costs but it did have lasting appeal and as I have said, eventually went on to make a healthy profit. It's a really common misconception that the film bombed when that's just not true, it just ended up costing double it's original budget and made no where near what the studio expected. I have a suggestion for a future video, what about covering all the 'Dizzy' games from Codemasters? They were great, an absolute staple for me when I was a kid, I can't believe people don't talk about them more often. Or maybe even a Bitmap brothers video, some of thier games were amazing and the music is some of the best around. I'm still patiently waiting for one of these indie groups to remaster Speedball 2 for the PS4/5 like they have done with Gods, absolutely love and miss that game :)

Thank you so much for all the hard work you put into your content. I can't believe I can indulge in 2 hours of Ocean licenced games. They do hold a special place in the heart of UK 80s micro owners. Thanks Kim!

Fantastic video. Congratulations! Just one small correction... Ocean's last Amstrad CPC game was the Addams Family (not Hudson Hawk), which was really good but perhaps a little too difficult. It even had a specially made demo released on the cover of Amstrad Action magazine (June 1992).

I loved hunchback on the spectrum 48K brings back great memories. Also I remember in the shops when you could play on the computers. There was a poke command that produced the rainbow lines, so it look like a game was loading. I would type in a games name and poke command and watch people waiting for the game to load :)

I could swear I had Emilio Butragueño Soccer. I seem to remember him on the cover and/or loading screen in his Spanish kit (rather than Real) I feel it was part of some cheap compendium of games but I cannot think what - my brain is circling around a 4 Soccer pack

I couldn't help but laugh when I saw 'Tai-Pan'... As a kid, I remember being confused by the 'Lady's House'; "You emerge physically tired, but happy." XD

This was quite brilliant and a very entertaining video. My favourite British software house was definitely Ultimate Play The Game. I had a Sinclair ZX Spectrum+ and an Atari 1040 STFM my second and third home computers.

As an owner of the humble Oric 1 during the early 80's it was hard to find good games for the system, however Hunchback and Mr Wimpy by Ocean were 2 of my favourites, I'd even go as far as to say that the Oric version of Mr Wimpy was the best version of the game with better graphics and sound than the the speccy game and brighter colours than the C64 version.

I remember beating the Amiga RoboCop gladly, it was easier than the Arcade version and had great graphics, I just adored the big gun and how its shots changed the enemy sprites to white while passing through them - a rare special effect in these times...

I believe that Ocean DID do another Graphic text adventure based on Hunchback. If they didn't, what the bloody hell was I playing 😀

34:30 - other Best Picture Oscar winners turned into video games: The Godfather / The Godfather, Part II / Rocky / Lord of the Rings: Return of the King. (The Cinemaware game "Wings" was heavily inspired by the first Best Picture winner "Wings," but it wasn't licensed and they changed a lot.)

The only Ocean game I knew was Mission Impossible for the PS1. For me it's a bit of a guilty pleasure. I recognize that the gameplay hasn't aged gracefully but I really appreciate what it tried to do with more stealth instead of pure action. Plus the soundtrack is just exquisite, particularly the track for the embassy mission and the one that plays in the CIA rooftop level. Also the level with the lasers is pretty badass and something unique in gaming as far as I'm concerned. I replayed that level over and over until I managed to do it without touching even 1 laser haha For some reason it seems like the majority of people on the internet seem to know it through the N64 and not the PS1 which has always confused me.

Incredible work. One funny bit to compliment the Robocop bugginess --> Batman: The Movie, on the C64, shipped initially with the Axis Chemical plant (first level) impossible to pass, at least in NTSC. This was even worse than Robocop. We tried to pass it for months until the local software house told us it was a bug and exchanged our box for one with a "v1.1" sticker, with a fixed first level.
