I agree about what a game changer playing co-op and GM-less is. I started playing Ironsworn: Starforged with a buddy and we are loving it. When you both get to GM AND play as players, you are fully engaged the whole time and really get to share in crafting the experience and story together. I normally play solo and hate group play, but GM-less co-op brings in the best of the social experience AND solo play.
I'm really surprised that its not more of an official thing for the big games. Why has the idea that an RPG needs a GM been the prevalent mode of play for so long? Honestly, I can't imagine ever wanting to play a GM-led game again.
I've been wanting to try this. An ongoing game in playing with my wife is kind of GMless but I fall a bit in the GM rut. Maybe the next one. And I only just started trying a solo as well so there's a lot to learn. Using pre-made adventures in this way is an interesting challenge. In gathering the courage to try without those training wheels as well.
I never even heard of Solitary Defilement. Sounds like a super rad idea and def looking to try it out. Also super excited to try the co-op DM style you mentioned. Thanks for sharing!
Also...if you use Spotify, Johan Nohr (the primary Mork Borg artist) made a public playlist that's over 7 hours long that was made to be used during MB campaigns. Some really good stuff there. 🤙🏻
This is such a cool idea. I haven't played RPG's in years, but I love reading game-books like this as inspiration for creating Doom metal. I've even recorded a full album inspired directly by Mork Borg, using the Calendar of Necrubel as the lyrics for the songs.
Thanks to this video, I decided to take the plunge and play a co-op session of Mork Borg with a friend using Solitary Defilement! It went absolutely fantastic, and we'll definitely be continuing it!
Mork Borg is RAD! Don't forget to pick the soundtrack! masterfully orchestrated by GNOLL, available through "Heimat Der Katastrophe music" (HDK 40 †), And Putrescence Regnant - BORG bog crawl, vinyl record to really set the musical back ground mood.
Great video! I've actually had Solitary Defilement (and more recent MD stuff) sitting next to my keyboard for weeks (months?) since it delivered and haven't even taken the ribbon off it to read it yet. I've just had so many Rpgs & boardgames deliver recently (like... 25 or so?) I can't even absord them or play them (and more on the way over the next couple months). Feels like every game I bought or backed the last 2 years is arriving all at once in a 4 month window. Ha!
I think the world needs more coop Mörk Borg. I used to run DARK FORT(mini solo-dungeon) with a group of 9 year olds at the school I worked at. Was really awesome to see how the kids took turns going first into the different rooms of the generated dungeon. And then died. Their characters... Not the kids...
I've been playing GM-Less for about 2-3 years now with a group of 3-4 players. What I like about gm-less is anybody can take the lead as the story progress and no prep at all. We play DnD 5e because it's the system we know but any system can be played solo/gm-less with the right tool. By our expercience, you need a oracle table, event table, mundane item table, a few atmospheric tables and one of the most important is a keyword table. When we're are stock, we roll a few keywords on this table and go from there. We also use a color code event system with six D20 of different color, ex: red die for monster, green for npc, blue for traps and feature... We rolls and check if it's over the threshold, so it dynamically produce something unique everytime and we make the link between all that.
@@paavohirn3728 I'm not sure where my previous response is so i'll try again, seems youtube doesn't want me to put imgur link (a picture of our main tables). It's homemade, so it's not one pdf that I can share and it's been a few years so I don't remember what are all the source. But I'm willing to help you if you wish to build something along the line, feel free to ask questions.
@@altabob1 Wow thank you! I'll keep that in mind. I have a ton of sources to pull from (probably too many). I'll be back with questions when they arise. I appreciate your offer of help! Oh yeah, the event table. Is it like random encounters but with other things as well. Did you guys create it or do you use a published one?
You just hyped me to buy MORG Borg. 10min later…I just bought physical copies of Morg Borg, the supplement, and Cy_Borg. I hope the Solitary Difilement can be played also with CY_Borg.
Great video and loved your take on the solitary defilement ruleset. I agree that it is a fantastic supplement for a hugely enjoyable game. I'm amazed how well it all works, the fantastic and hilarious stories it tells and simply how enjoyable it all is. I look forward to seeing your playthroughs.
I have been binging content of all sorts the past week ha I just ordered stuff on drivethrurpg, Sacrifice all of the current stuff POD and the PDFs (Alex T game love his stuff have Across a Thousand Dead Planets) Got Mork Bork, FERETORY, HERETIC, Solitary Defilement Expanded Edition and Forbidden Psalm (all PDFs of those) I am well sorted I ended up getting Psalm because one it was dirt cheap, adds skirmish warbands, plus I get stuff from Beastiurm Miniatures they do content with their minis for Psalm each month so might as well spend a tiny bit more to use what I have already :-) I will be well sorted for a long time and can get others to play as well if I want :-) trying to get my GF to try stuff out ha Thanks again bud I spent so much time trying to find what was right for me your videos were some of the best help out there.
@@TheDungeonDive yes big time also over the Christmas time il be doing alot of night work the place I work will be closed for two weeks so I can read alot and learn ha also thanks for reading about 20 million of my comments lol It was a long hard choice lol
I first experienced gmless and cooperative with Wander Home little over a year ago. It kinda takes the best bits of Solo and GM led games. You still get the surprise and unknown, cause other members in the group take you in a direction you may have never imagined. The only draw back is if you are used to being a GM or you are a strong player, you can sometimes take over. It works best if you share the spot light. Also to bait quiet players into creating by prompting them some how.
@@paavohirn3728 it sure is...but wanderhome can be played in a traumatic way. Kinda like your MB characters after they die go to an anthropomorphic heaven and take therapy. I really do need to get MB... if nothing else but for it's awesome layout and art.
@@paavohirn3728 I try now to get just pdfs...they take less space and are more portable. I realize some people like the tactile feel, I guess you could print them out. Also recently discovered they are shareable that way during online play (discord)
@@malchitos There are certainly pros for pdf's. I use them quite a bit. Sending pics from them to players, using a second copy on my phone keep access to certain pages etc. But physical books are also quite lovely as items and more convenient especially if the book is big (though a small book world be more convenient ofc).
Thanks for the review!! This RPG remind me a lot of a Dungeon Degenerates mood! I play a lot of Ironsworn every now and then but Ironsworn is getting too much sober and classical for me!! Mork Borg is absolutely amazing to look at and with your explanations, I'm gonna try it for sure! A "bug eater"!! What a nice class to play!! I was afraid it was just a kind of "good for the eyes" book without content, but I'm happy to see that you can get oracle and other stuff to expand and shape the world and your campaign! I also really like the atmosphere of death and decay in this game with no easy way out and really strange items!!! Thanks for the review , I will sure buy it!! Ho! And thanks for the playlist suggestion!!!
Me and my buddy started this last night as our first attempt at tabletop gaming. It went really well, but I was curious what your advice would be: there’s 2 of us, should we be rolling 2 D20’s on DR checks with the weak/strong hit system from Solitary Defilement? Or should we just be rolling normally per MorkBorg rules? The 2 D20 rule certainly seems to buff us, which seems good since there’s only 2 of us. And second, would you run the cap of 4 omens from Solitary Defilement with +1 omen each rest or would you just follow the omen rules from standard Mork Borg? Thanks!
@@TheDungeonDive okay great thanks. I think that’s what we’ll do as well. It seems it would be hard to play any official modules as a coop right? Seems like it’d be hard to draw the line between PC and GM knowledge. I figure we’d just let the dice tell the story for us. Also, do you have any suggestions on weak hits in combat. I’m really struggling with the “yes but” on such a common thing as just swinging in combat or blocking. Do you sometimes just forgo the “but” part of a weak hit due to drawing a blank? Edit: nevermind, just learned you use a single D20 in combat
RAW, you're really not supposed to use the 2D20 system for combat, but I like to. On weak hits in combat, I just try to come up something like 1/2 damage, or some narrative thing that happens like an opponent gets advantage on the next round, or something like that.
Hm. I like the idea of a coop, gm-less rpgs. I'll need to delve into this, as it may be something to do with my wife or a friend. I probably will avoid morg borg lol, not a fan of the theme. Still, cool product and details!
Sounds like a ton of fun! I would love to hear more about how you come up with stuff together. On a side note the letter ö is pronounced quite a bit like the e in "the". 😄
@@TheDungeonDive Oh yeah, that too. It's the same. Oh wait, is Tolkien's Murkwood actually Mirkwood? In any case I think the etymology there is also mörk, which means dark. Actually I was initially thinking about the name Öl which means beer in Swedish. I'm not meaning to be a language police, i just thought it might be interesting to know. Ö is a special letter we share between Finnish and Swedish.
I think it’s hard for non-native speakers like myself to pick up on the subtleties. I appreciate the comments though. :) I’ll always try to pronounce something correctly, just out of respect.
@@TheDungeonDive Yeah. I think that's cool. I can't pronounce every language even if I tried. I find english fascinating and frustrating. In Finnish and many other languages you can just say what the pronunciation is if the other language has it. If not, then then you have to actually learn by hearing. In English you have almost every sound but also every letter is pronounced in endless different ways.
If you have an oculus quest, you need to try ragnarock. All those music choices would be great for that game. Thank you for turning me on to this and dungeon degenerates. The Black metal themes are doing it for me!
Great vid. I started looking this stuff up for my solo duo games. I backed Mork Borg and Feretory but slept on this content. Is there any way to get Alone in the Crowd still? Super interested in that, but on a cursory search, only found info about it being KS exclusive.
Emma Ruth Rundle is my fauvorite singer, I saw her live 3 times here in UK and that album with Thou is absolutelly fantastic!!! Im definitelly checking out the resto of the playlist you´ve showed. Also!! that game looks sick!! love that sketchy dark art. Thanks for sharing!!
Omg just noticed that Playlist. Ruins of beverast and Empyrium are two of my most loved bands. I adore Rain upon the impure but Thule grimoires is a masterpiece as well. Have seen them live here in Germany. Absolutely fantastic! Hmmm..seems like this is right up my alley and your taste in music makes me think even more about whether it's time to upgrade to 25 $ support.
