Affordable housing in Yorkville, Manhattan? Where?
@scoutandscooter

I live on 85th east of York (or Ave. A ). I enjoy the walk to and from the subway. In the morning it gives me time to get mentally prepped for the day, and on the way home it just gets quieter and more relaxing as I head east. Probably won't take the new Q since I'd have to switch trains at 59th. When I go to the Christmas tree lighting at the park each year I feel like I'm in a small town. I'm afraid Carl Schurz will be over run by people moving into the new developments on 1st. Remember everyone, there is a Carl Schurz Conservancy - give what you can each year.

Assuming you still live there, I live on the same block as you. Lived there my whole life. I agree about the park, too.

It laughable that Yorkville is considered affordable. It's affordable only in the absurd alternate reality that is NYC real estate. The NYT as usual propping up the hype and feeding the vicious cycle.

+likeminas Agreed. Thank you. They say things like 3000 a month rent as affordable.

likeminas Well, if you wish to work in certain industries, like finance, fashion, marketing, publishing, journalism, art, diplomacy, among many - you HAVE to live and work in Manhattan. You can't really find a high-level job in public relations or hedge fund management in Boise, Idaho. People generally don't flock to live in NYC because of any "buzz" or "hype" of living in the cultural and financial capital of the Western Hemisphere. They do so because they wish to pursue educational opportunities and to advance their career.

In the Park Slope video, people said that there prices were really expensive, but it was at least $1,000 cheaper than Yorkville.

Then go back to school and reinvent yourself. Look at all the poor white kids that tried to move to ny thinking they could afford it. They're homeless now because they made the wrong decision

I was born in 1996 at NY Presbyterian and taken home to 88th and 2nd where I still live. This video does a good job of talking up the neighborhood for those interested in moving here. But I think you swung a missed at the historical background! In 1791, George Washington brought his troops to the East River at what is now Carl Shultz Park and fired at British troops in Astoria. The area's grid was created as part of the 1819 Commissioner's Plan, and it was finally connected to downtown via the Park Avenue train built in the 1860s and there formed a commercially oriented hamlet on 86th stretching across Lexington and Third. In the early 1900s it became a largely German community as Germans came uptown from Tompkins Square area after the ferry disaster of German immigrants in 1901. The Germans living here were essential in the development of German-American sentiment during WWII, including a 1939 Nazi rally on 86th street and a counter-Nazi movement. There remain several German establishments from that era on 2nd Ave. But the area east of Lexington lay in decrepit fashion until the early 2000s when gentrification began. Now on 86th Street you find a highly gentrified commercial street with new luxury high-rises going up all around each year. On Third Avenue, family-owned restaurants and classic shops, for example the old Dunkin Donuts shop, are being replaced with health food stores, expensive gyms, Whole Foods, yoga studios, and so on. With the Second Avenue subway completed, that avenue is on the verge of major transformations. And here we are.
