It's a show that takes place in school they have the easiest way to write characters out. No TV show should ever have 64 examples of the Chuck Cunningham syndrome.

Actually characters thinking they’re taking drugs only to find out it’s aspirin happened 3 times lol. The third time is in season 13 when Tristan starts dealing the basketball team “steroids” but it’s really vitamin B or something. So not exactly aspirin but the exact same concept lol. And I LOVE it

The acid episode with Shane was based on a real story that happened in Toronto in 1988 at a Pink Floyd concert. A teen took acid at the show and ended up falling into Lake Ontario and died so the episode actually played down the incident.

We all knew a "Steph" in middle school. Also between junior high and high school there were 3 cases of teachers making advances on students. One in middle school and she was fired. The second was the economics teacher in my highschool who slept with two 16 year old students. It came out because they legit got into a fight over him during lunch period. Unfortunately he wasn't arrested they just fired him and paid off the parents. This was 2002-2006.

Wait are you talking about that plotline about Paige from TNG sleeping with that teacher? Paige did get into a fight with Manny, but Manny never slept with him. They were fighting over something else and then Manny mentioned Paige's relationship with the teacher out of anger, for everyone to hear.

As an American adult it’s kinda weird that I’m just now realizing how much Canadian tv I watched as a kid. Degrassi, Ready or Not, Emily of New Moon. Goosebumps and Are You Afraid of the Dark were also made in Canada. You can’t talk about the theme song of Degrassi without mentioning how weirdly uncomfortable the camera zoom is on the jeans pocket/someone’s ASS! It always made my friends and I crack up laughing. What were they thinking. This isn’t Canadian but there was a weird lip sync show called Great Pretenders that feels like a fever dream when I remember it. I’m just wondering if anyone else even remembers it.

50:25 The closing theme for DJH was so much stronger than the one for Degrassi High. The guitar line coming in slowly before the drop always had more emotional weight than the abrupt dive into keyboard of the DH version. The worst aspect of the DH theme is that cheesy little 80s rock guitar flourish that happens like 4 seconds in. It often felt inappropriately light after heavier conclusions. Edit: I should mention that the full DJH closing theme starts earlier than the one I time-coded. There’s actually a good 15 seconds of intro of guitar and drums before it fully kicks into to the familiar keyboard riff. A good example can be found at the end of “Smokescreen” when Caitlyn gives Rick a peck on the cheek.

Please talk about Degrassi High and beyond! I never was into TNG when I was the “target audience” but I binged Degrassi Junior High & Degrassi High on and off last year (and the year before?) starting when I was home sick from work one day. They were definitely a fun time and now I just got past the whole big Rick episode in TNG a while back. I’ll probably jump back into binging it one day when I’m just craving that Drama and Angst. I’ve absolutely been loving your videos, Kay, and I hope you get more subscribers soon! You totally deserve them, your last few videos in particular have been awesome and interesting. (Also god I’m forever sad about Wheels and his struggles. Also would you maybe consider talking about the movie, too? The one between Degrassi High and TNG.)

I found your channel via the babysitters club and the life is strange video, YOU DO NOT BEILVE HOW HAPPY I AM THAT YOU ARE DOING LIKE A SERIES OF VIDEOS ON DEGRASSI! As weird as it sounds I find old cheesy tv-shows like Degrassi extremely comforting and before I got into my my current anime/mcyt phase, Degrassi was weirdly my comfort show (I could like quote the whole first episode of Next Generation from how much I watched it). You are SO good at this. I am in that weird age group that is too young for the original and too old for the next generation, so, of course I watched them all. Love how Linda Schuyler cast the show and how the plots do not have Hollywood endings. The part about the never fail diagnosing combination of diary and science fair project had me laughing. Can I just say I love Joey’s character arc throughout Degrassi Junior High up to TNG! He went from being an annoying little kid to a kind and caring father/step father. I also really loved Snake all throughout the Degrassi franchise and his cameo in Drake’s I’m Upset video makes me laugh uncontrollably.

Oh, fun fact time! The kids got to choose not only their clothing, but also many of their storylines and even character’s names. Stephan Brogan was given the choice between the Snake 🐍 🐍 snek we all know and love… and Slim. When I learned that, I couldn’t help but replace his name with “Slim” in a number of scenes, and sometimes it becomes hilarious.

You might have considered the episode of Rick being abused unrealistic and disliked the adult intervention but as a young child I watched that episode alot and really identified with Rick's character. It served as a fantasy of being rescued for me.

Totally late to the party but yes, I agree. Although to some viewers the abuse may seem “dramatic”, I have family members who were abused growing up and actually can’t watch those scenes because they come across so visceral and triggering for them.

Ok I had never watched the OG Degrassi series but seeing the ending of Degrassi Junior High blowing up, I’m assuming that Drake’s I'm Upset music video ending was a nod to this because the school catches on fire at the end of the music video.

During the pandemic, I decided to rewatch all of Degrassi: TNG. After, I wanted to know more so I went back and watched Junior High and High School. And I fully agree with everything you said. It's a very unique series in the way it used the actors and there's nothing else quite like it.

Great video! I grew up watching the original Degrassi Junior High/High series as I was a teenager when it originally aired. Snake was my favorite (and I admit it: I had a crush on him in high school!). Regarding the age of consent in Canada, it was actually 14 back in the day and was only raised to 16 in 2008. So, the reason for Steph lying is more about seeming older than actually breaking the law. And back then, it wouldn't have been considered as rape, especially since nothing happened (the potential date rape situation wasn't viewed as such -- Steph learned a lesson: not a good idea to go on a date with an adult, hence why there wasn't any report against the guy). It's also a contrast with the creepy substitute teacher, who had a far more predatorial behavior with Lucy. About the whole "tested on animals" bit: that was a big issue back in the late 80s.

between this and the BSB video, it is so freaking satisfying to have stumbled upon a youtube channel that speaks straight to my aging, elder millennial heart! though not a teen show per se, the UK's Coronation Street (episodes are available day-of on BritBox or on a bit of a delay on Hulu) has featured 13/14 yr old pregnancies since the early 90s, as well as constantly hitting the issues HARD (a la: Degrassi: it goes there), including a really recent Spike-style goth/punk discrimination/attack storyline, which was actually based on a real girl's tragic story. if you're not already watching Corrie - i highly suggest giving it a go!

All the top 5 soaps have so much interesting storylines. Doctors in 2008 and Hollyoaks in 2016 are main examples. Also I still don’t get how Gail nearly getting murdered by her ex-husband lost an award for Iconic Storyline in the 20 years of Soap Awards to an Emmerdale one.

Loved Degrassi Jr/High growing up! I was too young to watch during their original run but as a Canadian, of course these episodes were always around in some capacity. I live in Toronto where the show takes place and have even been to the school they used for Jr High, which was trippy. I hope you continue this series (and the BSC one too!). Joey + Caitlin 4ever!

This was excellent. Fastest hour I've had all week. I'm already excited for Degrassi High and especially "School's Out". Hell, I already want to know your thoughts on the Kevin Smith episodes of TNG. Just tremendous work. So glad you mentioned Snake's brother. I thought about that episode a lot the last 30 years. For a show so great about it's callbacks and references, how did his brother not even get mentioned in TNG? Re: Drake being mentioned in New Class. I actually loved it, and in my head, Drake is Jimmy Brooks. And Ashley nearly ruined it with selfish editing choices.

I grew up in the 80s and my sister and I loved Degrassi junior high. To this day if one of us has a sore throat we grab our own neck dramatically and state tragically… He gave me mono!

I don't often comment on videos but I had to in this case. This is by far one of the best Degrassi video essay type YT vids I've seen. I'm a mega Degrassi fan and loved hearing someone else talk abt the franchise with the same love and attention to detail that I have. Please consider doing vids on the other shows in the franchise, or Degrassi High at the bare minimum! I love your content, and you've gotten a subscriber out of me 😍

I am absolutely here for this content. I watched all of degrassi jr high, degrassi high, and the movie during quarantine and literally?? You said everything I thought while watching this series. Like I dont know anybody who's seen it and I needed to hear somebody else talk about how bonkers it was that they played the theme song after Wheels finds out his parents died omg and that the school literally burned down as soon as they were done with it??? This show had no right

My first Degrassi encounter was in middle school health class, in the middle of America. (Spike gets pregnant, and still my favorite eps when the kids eat baby aspirin and got "high") When I moved to Canada I realized there was so much to Degrassi but Jr and High lives rent-free in my head.

here from a recommendation by Jose :) never saw jr high, but watched a lot of the next generation as a kid. this was still fascinating to watch and you did a really good job explaining everything, hope you do more :D
