In today's video, I visited Andersonville Prison Camp. I got to see what the stockade wall looked like and was able to see how the prisoners built shelters called “Shebangs” with whatever materials that were available. I also saw where the entire perimeter of the stockade and “dead line” were located as I drove around the entire campsite. It Is a sobering experience to visit Andersonvill Prison Camp…Make sure too stop in if you are in the area.

The construction reminds me of ancient Native American fortresses. Many people don't realize that some ancient North American peoples inhabited impressive wooden fortresses with walls not unlike what we see here. All that remains of these fortresses are dirt mounds in the American East and Midwest. It's nice to see this particular piece of history, somber as it is, reconstructed for modern educational purposes. Due to such sites being constructed largely out of wood, they don't stand the test of time like stone pyramids do and thus risk being lost to history. We may never know exactly what those ancient Native American fortresses looked like, but I'm glad we can visit some snapshots of history such as this old prison camp.

War is brutal and it makes humans do inhumane things like Andersonville and Sherman's march to the sea. Let's hope America never returns to this.

The uss Yorktown is also. You can take a fairy ride out to I believe it was called ft.sumptner. I enjoyed it very much. That was 25 years ago but I wish I could go back. We got to spend the night on the battle ship and sleep on the bunks like the real sailers did.

Just saying but I have always wanted to go to Andersonville and the reason is because within the cemetery is one of my 3rd great grand uncles sergeant George Washington shriver and he was captured by the Grey ghost aka John singleton Mosby on New Year’s Day 1864 and sadly on august 25th 1864 he passed away at the age of 28 and he passed away at Andersonville.

Hi Rachel. I wonder if you have heard of the Story concerning a young couple who were imprisoned at Andersonville after their boat was captured by Confederate troops? She concealed her identity to stay with her husband and later became pregnant and all three survived.

It is awful, but they were fighting over the right to keep slaves who life was even worse. And as Brit we had banned slavery 60 years earlier (as did many European countries).
@southronjr1570
@southronjr1570 5 месяцев назад
Slavery didn't become a major issue until 1863 when Lincoln issued the emancipation proclamation (which specifically left out freeing any slaves in Northern states, of which Maryland, Connecticut, Kentucky, even Washington DC held many in). The main reason for the Civil War was the same as every war in history, money and power. The more populace northern states held a majority in the house and as such could ram through massive import/export tarrifs. The South, being an agrarian based economy could sell their goods overseas for much more than they could be sold to the North, well shocker, the North didn't want that so they imposed massive taxes on the goods going in and out, specifically to force Southern goods to be sold to them and a much lower rate than Europe was willing to pay. Less than 1% of the South were slave owners (of which the largest slave holders were actually freed slaves themselves) going to war of just that issue would be like saying the UK is going to war with France because France wants to outlaw anyone having a motorcycle. Also, most Southerners detested the practice of chattel slavery, Gen Lee, Gen Jackson and many others hated it and weren't shy about it, even to the point of Gen Jackson openly breaking Virginia law working against it. Keep in mind that legal slavery did not officialy end until the early 1980's around the world and more people are held in slavery, while officially illegal, today than there ever were in the US as a whole. Do not assume that I, in any way agreed with slavery, just that there were many reasons for the South to go war than just over one issue.
