The peek into the world of luxury interior design focuses on Chelsea, one of London's most exclusive boroughs. Leading architect Sally Mackereth is transforming a former artist's studio into a fully furnished apartment for a luxury developer. Travelling across Europe, she collects and commissions exclusive furniture - from satin wall lining to a table made from 8,000-year old wood - as she tries to appeal to an international buyer interested in Chelsea's artistic heritage. Meanwhile, Russian property investor Julia Solovyev seeks inspiration as she sets out to furnish the Chelsea house of her dreams.

stijnvdv2 In my view there are those who set their value way too high and by doing so exploit those unable to do the same. I think that those in the “professions” and “management” have exploited a system they designed to favour themselves. It’s the hierarchy gone mad. The actual value returned is poor compared to the take. It’s rather sad when you’re so rich but absurdly insecure shown by your buy to impress lifestyle. That insecurity promotes making more money to spend on lavish exhibits of success to your peers. New money in a nutshell, which is how our own industry owning upper middle class played the game.

I thought resurrecting the black oak for the tables was the most interesting piece of information and a beautiful table resulted. It is a work of art. The lady who’s husband was the artist had a dreamy apartment, it was so nostalgic , what a story she has in her world and with his work.

modern art and furniture can co-exist in a historic home. It's actually incredibly chic...but I agree that tearing out historic features of the architecture and historic decorative details should be strongly discouraged....unless it is beyond repair or dangerous...modern art on a beautiful patinated wood walled room is an amazing juxtaposition of time and tastes....never damage the shell.

As an artist, I’m saddened for the lady who’s artist husband died and left behind decades of artwork. We (the artists) can no longer find affordable places to live and work. Sabina J An odd assertion. It’s like looking at Lottery winners, these women winning the lottery of life, but finding old money doesn’t want to associate with new vulgar money. One must question their definition of home when old money may have a country retreat and city home where these have multiple properties which, when rationally assessed, are akin to depositing money into a bank, because they’re investing rather than buying a home. This investment mindset dominates the property market. There’s a point where money loses any value becoming a tool to buy and impress on others ones relative success. I don’t see happiness when that’s your directing principle in life.

What should have been added to the "international buyer" description of her clients is that some of them might be criminals who use London to launder their money. Where will ordinary, hard-working people live? In the back alleys or under bridges? The developer says she is saving the buildings. I'm with Mr. Chelsea and his puzzlement of the extravagance of shallow wealthy people living only to impress other shallow wealthy people. How pathetic.
