At the MotoGP level, I'll bet there are some awesome spreadsheets/algorithms used by the mechanics to work out the gear ratios - calculating, primary, secondary, internal ratios, and projected speeds for each corner, uphill, downhill and straight.

Back in my 250GP days my Honda had a cassette gear box with multiple options for each gear. It only took a few minutes to switch them out and Honda provided a spread sheet to show you what the ratios would be when you mixed them up. It was so confusing with small print I had it copied to 11x17 paper just so we could read it. Luckily once we figured out how to use it we found we would change only 2nd to 4th gears along with the sprockets most of the time. Oh and when of those internal gears broke they made horrible noise so you knew right away you race was over.

So when I raced and wanted to keep the swing arm length, we would use 2 master links; in between the 2 master links we had different small lengths of chain, one link or one link and a half up from 1 link(link and a half) up to 15 links, etc. Worked great, in 13 years never had a problem doing this.
@anthonyefarr

Loving this series, so much information. I'm in shock that a Moto 2 bike can be geared to 315KPH!!
@raynic1173
@raynic1173 4 года назад
That might be a 'theoretical' calculation. As far as I know there are only a few tracks where even the MotoGP bikes reach that speed. It takes a lot of horse power to reach the 300+ area, even if you have the room in front of you, just look at the street versions of liter bikes. Most liter bikes will top out around 320-335 and they have way more hp than a stock 600 cc Moto2 bike.
@tazthedevil22
@tazthedevil22 4 года назад
@@raynic1173 at Qatar the Ducati world superbike bikes could hit 324kph. I dont know what the gp bikes do at that track? But hitting 315 on a 765cc engine is a lot, but I guess it is possible.
@BangAverageRider
@BangAverageRider 4 года назад
@@raynic1173 the Japanese manufacturers have restrictions to limit modern 1000cc to 300kph.. The moto 2 bikes are capable of that but like you said maybe not much more due to horsepower but it would be great to see one on a run way attempting a top speed test
@BangAverageRider
@BangAverageRider 4 года назад
@@tazthedevil22 this year the moto 2 bikes reached 294kph at qatar
@raynic1173
@raynic1173 4 года назад
@@tazthedevil22 well ain't that 665 and a moto2 is half the hp of a gp bike?
