Also sorry for the reverb of the video we're watching. We are working out the process to improve the sound! We wanted to avoid headphones but might be necessary. We didnt want to use the podcast set as its a bit awkward with how far apart we sit.
Sounds was fine. What is odd is the camera angle, as it forces perspective to only you and Phil. It comes across that Jay's back is to Nick and that Nick is odd man out.
Thank you Jay!! I remember watching you when I was 15 and you had 10,000 subscribers. Now I'm 25 and just recently graduated as an engineer in computer science, in no small part thanks to you, Linus and others who all sparked my interest for computers and technology.
Similar thing happened to me, started geeking on tech videos back in 2011, built my first PC in 2012 and now I'm about to graduate from the same major as you!
Congratulations Itzaak98 on your graduation. The show was pretty funny but Phil's thought bubble kept advertising fast food. Nick is way to quiet but knowledgeable in the field. Thanks for the throwback show.
in 2014 jay built me 4 computers for my business. used these cases. still all work great. Built me a gaming computer for my home, but i replaced that, but it was really nice. Gave it to my computer guy. Jay is the best. really nice person.
you were and still are one of my go to guys when it comes to computer related stuff, I started watching your videos in 2015 if im not mistaken, and ive been a fan ever since. Keep going man!
This video was about the same time as the release of the Silverstone Raven RV-02. Now that was a unique case design. I finally replaced my RV-02 this year. 10 years of service from a case ain't bad.
Great thing about watching something that far back is if you were around then you can really enjoy it. For those that weren't around or didn't go through it then really strikes them odd. It's great to see what old trends still live up and what went by the wayside. Keep looking back from time to time.
Freakin' hilarious! I definitely think you should drop one of these every now and then - maybe as a compare and contrast from "back then" to now from a tech standpoint. I really love retro computers and that includes the old DOS and Windows 95 stuff. Watching you guys react to the progress would be a fun excursion from the usual content. Plus, for anyone wanting to do RU-vid on a more serious basis, they could learn what it takes to be successful. Regardless, loved this and hope to see more!
10 years ago, in the summer of 2013, I put together my VERY first gaming computer - with an i5-2500K and a RadeonHD 6870 in an Antec 300 PC case. I still have the computer, lovingly called "the Cougar" (P67 "Cougar Point" Intel chipset), although Skyrim is the only game I still play on it nowadays. 🙂 From a 2500K to a 5700X, and from a GTX 1650 Super to a 3070Ti - a lot has indeed changed.
I've watced your videos from around 2015 or 2016, if I remember correctly. Many of them have been helpful to me. Oh and by the way, I have the Define XL R2 case, found one for free in Facebook about a year back, and it was in such a good condition that I just had to pick it up. Still in a good condition, and it's easy to build into, there's so much room
Yes! This was fun, more please. :) A stroll down memory lane are often quite funny. It also lets you know that you have improved a lot even though it might not seem so.
Jay im pretty sure ive been with you since the Fx 8xxx era, but you were always popping and going in my youtube. But i always used you for a reliable source of hardware and review stuff. Even got into networking from all the stuff i watched :D
I only put computers on the floor, mostly because I pretty much only build in full tower cases. I just bought a couple pieces of 1/8" stainless steel to set the cases on to keep it away from the carpet. Also a more solid foundation.
I'm on a different account now but I have been watching since November of 2015. I was building my first PC and I used your videos as a guide. I'll always be watching! Thank you for all the years of awesome content, wishing you all the best moving forward!
i still remember the first video I saw from back in the day was doing a custom watercooling ssystem. With off brand water blocks and and clear plastic hose with some off the shelf green coolant from microcenter.
For whatever reason your channel has given me the motivation to start my own and honestly seeing this old video makes me feel that it is possible. Yes, a lot of people say it is, but sounds like shtuff when you are filimg witha 4k/8k full frame camera and have a trained/professional person to edit and actually live of your content. THIS is a boost of confidence since i can relate about doing/thinking stuff while at work and, again, makes me feel that with the right amount of effort and patience i can make it there. Hope that one day i get to meet you in person. Keep it up!
damn... to think that I've been watching Jay since late 2013..... even though I'm 30 now and back then I was 20, not really that far in age from Jay, I kinda feel like he was a digital dad for me... most of my base knowledge regarding PCs and came from him. Thanks for being here Jay! and hope to see your channel grow even more!
I'd really enjoy it if you kept doing these looks back at older videos for your milestones. I first started watching you when you were still working on Skunk Works so its been quite a journey since then. Keep up the awesome videos, Jay!
Jay, I remember stumbling upon your fractal review in 2013 when I was shopping around for a case! At the time, your video convinced me to go with a NZXT case instead.
I just migrated my home server out of this case two months ago. Worked great for the last 10 years. The sound dampening sure didn't make it silent, but it did help knock down the overall pitch of the noise. Was a heavy SOB though. Only reason I changed out the case was the weight to be honest. Moved to a Meshify 2. Fractal is one the last vendors supporting large HDD counts in cases. The Meshify 2 being even rarer having a solid side panel.
That was a blast :) Great point on using wood on carpet. I always get tile. Multitude of colors and patterns to match whatever flooring your using it on. Haven't been to the hardware store in a minute, but given how much wood went up, probably cheaper with tile right now :). More of these, as you feel the need to, please!! That was a great trip down memory lane :).
The define r2 xl is THAT old? bloody hell...as of a week ago before my mobo died i was still using that case in my am4 build. If it had a full front removable psu filter i would honestly still use it in my upcoming am5 build. Such a good case imo and almost dead silent. Im gonna miss it :(
I would love to see a "through the years" series. Pick a date and do one of these look back reaction videos for every year. It would give you guys and all of us a look at the progression of your personalities and the channel.
Jay's use of the phrase "Also, too" has grown exponentially over 10 years. Congrats on the growth, and thanks for great content. Shout out to the team -- Get 'em bottle or something 🍻
thats exactly what i have lol 2 boards doweled and glued and stained a nice dark wood stain then cut to size to fit the pc right on top. looks nice actually!
This was fun. I wasn't there for this but funny to see how you started out. I'm still in this position trying to figure out the best way to do it and make people wanna watch.
Enjoyed your content since early-mid 2014. By then, from what I recall, things were looking quite improved.. I recall Skunkworks, with the yellow fluid and that gun-metal coloured case, and I remember thinking "My lord, that is the sexiest computer I have ever seen." I hadn't seen many custom builds at that point, but man, that is still such a nice PC to me.
The first video I’ve ever seen if you jay, wasn’t even related to computers it was a pair of headphones by a brand called “munitio”, hopefully I spelled that right. But I remember that video so well because it convinced me to get one. Now I need to go find this video of yours 😂
I'm trying to remember how far back I started watching. It was either just before Nick came on (back when he went by Coconut Monkey) or just after. I just know it's been a long time.
Jay I started watching your videos JUST before you hit 100K subscribers ( I think). It's cool to see some of the really old "stuff". Keep it up you guys, you guys are creative, knowledgeable, and entertaining.
Literally lol. I have the O11 Dynamic Evo And I have all 3 fans at the bottom pulling in. I do got to say the BeQuiet fans are fantastic! This case does gives you a lot of options for creation within the case. #1 would recommend to anyone with OCD or someone who wants a cool looking sleek case.
Oh... I can't help it. I'm bringing up your list of vids and going back to the beginning. I think I discovered you in April or May of 2018 just before I last built a computer. The parts for my new machine are enroute (Prime Day just came and went). I saved money last time by not buying HDD's as I figured I would just transfer them into the new machine. Now I've saved money by not getting a case so I'll just transfer the new parts into my old case (not the original case actually, I replaced that a couple of years ago with a slightly smaller mid-size tower, my full-size Rosewill THOR V2 was so big I couldn't see the ports on top without pulling it out of the cubby). I somehow seem to build a more powerful computer every time I build, but I pay less.
I moved away 17 years ago but hearing you say the IE and then mention Victorville, so funny. I didn't live in Victorville, don't get me wrong. I did live in Yucaipa though and for over 20 years. I worked in Redlands and I was all over the Riverside and San Bernardino Counties as a teen/young adult. I remember when Ontario Mills Mall was built and opened. I went to the Central City Mall as a teen when it was hoppin before they installed the carousel and became known as The Carousel Mall in San Bernardino. Now sadly it's a shambles and deserted mall. I worked in Highland when the Rodney King Riots were happening. I saw people being assaulted in the parking lot and we had the store locked down only letting 1 customer in at a time. Disneyland had a "dance floor club" like thing you could go to and they had Samantha Foxx play there on my Grad Night while New Kids on the Block played Tom Sawyer's Island Stage (Where Fantasmic is now). Yucaipa came out of Township and became a City while I lived there. When we moved back there after being in Colorado Springs for 6 years, Yucaipa had about 27,000 people. Now it's got double that. If it could still be like it was when I was a teen/young adult and didn't become so insanely expensive to live in, I'd still be there. I still have family there though so I get back there when I can. Anyways, just the IE shout out brought back memories. Thanks!
You and Linus are my favs, honestly one of if not my favorite videos you did was several years ago talking about you personally, specifically about your weight loss journey. I jokingly call myself your twin, as we are just about the same age, give or take a year, I was also very heavy, though not quite as heavy as you had got, also had gastric surgery and lost a ton lol. I am also funnily enough missing the same tooth LMAO.
My 10 year pc journey. I actaully have the unopened case of of the first tower of my pc I built. NZXT Source 210. And my old M5A97 and FX6300 with blue vengeance on a torture rack in my living room.
7:00 thats how my h700 is. i was wanting to check that filter one day but it was against the wall, and i am lazy so i was like never mind i dont want to pick it up and turn it around to pull it out. lol
I remember that old intro, it doesn't really feel that long ago since you changed, about a year prior to the change is when I started watching you (since I remember this intro change like it was last year, it might've been longer)
I came across your channel a tad later, had watercooling back in the 2000's but you inspired me to go hard tubing. and am still enjoying my build. and even I love the looks on the Corsair QL fans and pump (and no I don't like the cable's on them, cuzz it's hell to manage and cover them up) . Yet I am still enjoying my build, and hope to see some nice ones from you again in the future ^^
What definitely has changed, is that most hardware manufacturers and reviewers seem to think that a PC is only for gaming. Minimal expendability, rgb lights everywhere etc.
I think I first saw your review of some AMD(or is that ATI?) Radeon something, because I was looking to replace the borrowed GTX 640 from my friend. It sure feels like a long time and you are the first tech channel I found! And then from recommendation LTT and GN follow suit. I love how goofy this channel is, and you guys are awesome!
An idea for future content: 10 Year Revisits. take something that you reviewed 10 years ago, and see how it compares to the modern equivalent in terms of quality and price. Like, for example, a pair of gaming headphones from 10 years ago that cost $100 compared to a pair of modern gaming headphones that cost $100. You can also see if some of the companies you did reviews for are still in business, because the tech industry can be volatile.
