This video was filmed in the afternoon of October 2023 at the Ichikawa Zoological and Botanical Garden, aka Ichikawa City Zoo in Chiba. Iban, the male, flanged Sumatran orangutan, receives a small carton of milk and a bag of dried, small sardines. He lays in the indoor space and begins eating the snacks neatly. Once he finished drinking milk, he took the empty carton to the outdoor enclosure. He pours water into the carton and drinks it. Then, he moves on to play water with a pink container and the carton. He had played for quite a while. I had to cut some parts to make the video viewable. It was quite interesting to observe how an adult orangutan plays with water using tools for long periods of time (about 25 minutes). When he is done, he climbs up the structure, watching the surroundings. Then he moves to the gate, where Lily stays behind. Lily, who is behind the mesh, watches Iban lay down. Iban eventually moves his sitting position near the other gate, preparing to end the day. The video ends with Iban becoming flat. He might have been too sleepy or exhausted.

Compared to the Bornean species, Sumatran orangutans have a paler red color and have longer limbs. The average period of parenting by a female Sumatran orangutan is about 9 years. (Ref: JMC)

• In June 1992, Iban and Summi were given by Medan City to Ichikawa City. They were about 4 and half years old.
• In April 1993, Iban joined Summi who had first moved to their new orangutan house, but they didn't get along. Iban lost the fight.
• In January 2002, Iban was mentally strong, and started living with Summi. They mated successfully.
• On September 4, 2003, Wootan was born. He now lives at Non Hoi Park, in Aichi, Japan.
• On July 16, 2010, Lily was born.
• On February 24, 2018, Popo was born.
• On April 29, 2023, his long time partner Summi passed away due to septic multiple organ failure.
