The blatant disregard some people have for medicine is honestly unbelievable. The directions on the label are there to protect you, not to kill the vibe and ruin your fun.
About six months ago I stumbled across this channel. Before that, I had begun abusing medications and I'm grateful to be here to say that the phase only lasted a few months, thanks in large part to these educational videos. This channel saved my life and got me into rehab.
@Swu. As a recovered dxm abuser, accurate af. I took five boxes of coricidin and hallucinated a version of myself telling me "hey man, I f--king hate you, you know that?"
Big respect to the actor who cooked and ate the same amount of raw chicken and nighttime flu medicine as the guy in the story just to get the video shots. I hope they had a new liver on standby after filming.
I have suffered acute liver failure leading to acute multiple organ failure ( As a result of disease). This is no joke - it has a mortality rate of some 80%. I had a rare autoimmune condition at same time, (hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis or HLH), undiagnosed, so my chances of surviving were about 0 and I had a doctor tell me in no uncertain terms that I was going to die in that hospital bed. After heroic efforts by so many people to keep me alive they determined I needed my spleen removed because my red & white cells and platelets were critically low and my spleen was about 8lb because it was keeping all the blood. I have been closer to death than nearly anyone alive to tell about it. Finding a surgeon was just one of many hurdles because they determined I was too critical and unstable to survive surgery. One surgeon agreed but then it was convincing anesthesiologists. It took a team of anesthesiologists to do a somewhat routine surgery. I was in a medically induced coma and on life support for quite a while. 6mo in an ICU bed, having to learn to walk again, multiple dvt/pe, still disabled as a result. Don't mess with medicine. Some may have a lot of play before serious injuries and some, like Tylenol, take 1 mistake to put you in danger. It's not worth your life or the difficulties it can permanently cause to get some likes online.
@@nachtegaelw5389 thanks. It was something I privately feared but promised my family I would fight with every breath. I made peace with my mortality as a way to cope. It wasn't really awful for me at the time because I was so heavily medicated. It was after I started to recover that fear really was a problem. Would I be discharged only to die after fighting so hard? After months in a nursing home at age 30 I made it home and PTSD hit - it's a process. I made it through for a reason and I try to make the most of every moment every day because they're all seemingly borrowed.
Loved the video, but I thought acetaminophen being bad for the liver was basic and common knowledge, to where people stupidly use it for suicide. The metabolite stuff seemed pretty thorough, as usual in a chubbyemu vid
Yeah, the intro was funny and I thought "Who in the world would be dumb enough to cook their food with medicine...even for 'the lulz'?" When he brought up similar, but more relatable situations, like taking more than one medication at a time, I thought "Oh, shit. I better keep this in mind next time I take meds."
I like the way Dr. Bernard presents these medical mysteries. It's educational. Health classes in high school and college and medical school should see this.
I knew a college girl who had terrible menstrual cramps, for which she took whatever OTC medicine she could get. Apparently she poured both acetaminophen and ibuprofen pills into a small bottle she kept in her purse. And whenever the pain got to be more than she could deal with, she took more pills. She wound up with liver damage that made her unable to keep down food for two weeks, until her liver recovered. Eventually she did recover her liver function. She eventually needed a hysterectomy for the endometriosis that had caused her period pain.
I’ve taken otc pain pills excessively for a rly long time (actually ODed on them once intentionally, what made me stop taking them so much and often) and it still scares me to think that my liver could be absolutely wrecked and I don’t know
I think I toe the line of taking too much tylenol and ibuprofen. Or just Meloxicam when I remember to refill it. My liver is probably struggling but like if I don’t it’s impossible to excercise without experiencing joint pain. The dilemmas of having undiagnosed autoimmune disease.
All the women i've ever known to have consistently bad menstrual experiences have always told me to shut up whenever i've said to get themselves checked for an actual issue, because i'm a man and therefore can't know what it's like. Except for one, who didn't have them at all and said "i just thought i was lucky" after finding out she had polycystic ovaries. They aren't supposed to be all that bad, and they never listen.
The Human body tends to have a mind by itself. You have microscopic organisms that "remember" certain viruses of the past that got you sick as it was stored in a sort of memory bank. That's why when the virus enters your body at a later time, your immune system fights back and destroys the invader. It truly is remarkable to think that entire wars are fought to protect you
Man, the first minute or so of the story cracked me up. “The more he found a post funny, the more he would make no expression while breathing more and more air out of his nose.” Dr. Bernard gets it. Love this guy. 😊

When I was newly an adult and at college for the first time, a new friend introduced me to drinking cough medicine. We used to robo-trip, and I had drunk a full bottle several times before. While I read that dextromethorphan isn't typically dangerous in larger doses in some medical journals, those other ingredients surely weren't great to overdose on. One time at a party, I got so messed up that time appeared to be wavering, slowing and speeding up. I freaked out and tried calling 911, but don't think I did, and wound up staring at the ever changing pattern on the wall all night trying to come down. My heart would typically beat at a high rate while sitting still for several hours into the next day. I decided to not do it again, and it's been decades since then. My health is pretty good, but man, I really wonder what hell I was causing inside when I was young. Don't do drugs, kids! Even if over-the-counter!
this is how i felt when i accidentally od’d on 10 mg of weed. i was high for 3 days straight i think, and i couldn’t tell what was real and what was not. i have a lot of mental health issues, and i had already struggled with problems relating to derealisation. i lived in a state where weed was legal, and in my high, i’d tried to call an ambulance but the person i was with wouldn’t let me so i had to sit, high as hell all night long. i think at one point i was in the bath tub, letting cold water run on me to help ground myself, and then i also wound up in the kitchen gagging real bad. 😭 so yeah, no drugs. drugs = bad i swore off weed forever after that incident
That one time I tried more dxm then i used previously with codeine, and i had THE worst trip ever, the feeling of bugs crawling under my skin included 💀 it was so terryfing that i never did that again and got clean shortly after, but man, i remember it so well years after, definately question my life choices during that period
I was considering taking double the recommended dosage of a sleep aid and stopped because I thought to myself, “I don’t want to end up making ‘a recovery’ in a ChubbyEmu video.” So thank you for keeping me safe with these videos!
Taking double the dose of an OTC sleep aid isn't anything to stress over. It's when you start using 4x the amount or more. Diphenhydramine is considered safe up to 150mg. (Depending on who you ask, and by no means is that the recommended dose.)
Even at the lowest dose daily use of diphenhydramine has been linked with increased chances of dementia. If that’s what you’re taking find another sleep aid there’s lots of choice
We suspected my young daughter drank an entire bottle of children's Tylenol. We rushed her to the ER where they tested her blood Acetaminophen levels (hyperacetaminaphenemia??), but fortunately it came back as 0. When we got back home, we discovered she had dumped the bottle on the floor, thankfully!
hyperacetaminaphenemia 😂 it’s even funnier after surviving an OD of it myself Glad she didn’t go through that though! Even though I got help quickly, seeing your own legs shake uncontrollably while you can’t feel them is horrifying. Luckily, I had no liver damage - they pumped my stomach then put charcoal down the tube in time (also not a fun time) and then there’s the charcoal shits…
Lots of people here think OP is a real person, despite Dr. Bernard clearly stating that no cases of this are on the record. Calling the hypothetical victim "OP" flew way over many people's heads.
@@Nightriser271828 Although it is based off someone who intentionally ingested acetaminophen. He said that towards the end. Unfortunately there are 1 too many people who choose that as their way out. Also, "OP." 🤣

Important note for those of us watching in the UK (and for those of us visiting the UK): What folks in the US call acetaminophen, we call paracetamol in the UK. They are the same chemical, with the same structure and the same effects. Assuming that you're okay just because you're taking things with different names isn't necessarily accurate.
I take for granted that my mother is an RN. She taught me how to read labels on OTC meds, how to take care of myself when I am sick, and overall how to avoid situations like an Acetaminophen OD. It never really hit me until a girl I was dating got very sick and she had no clue how to take care of herself. She didn't know that fluids are the most important thing and got so dehydrated we had to go to the ER because she was on the verge of passing out.
I just had a bad early experience and researched every drug I took after that, even recreational ones. Did she tell you to give lorazepam to someone on hallucinogens having a bad trip? That's a big one. The stroke test is good to know too...I've had to use it several times on my dad.
@@lottnio8207 She wasn't stupid, but she didn't know how to take care of herself medically if she got sick. Medicine is not taught to people in the US unless they actually go to school for it.
@@coyotedomino Unfortunately I have no idea how it works chemically, but from personal experience I know it will bring you down and even outright stop it in minutes. I also watched a documentary where one of the nurses from Woodstock saved a guys life because nobody knew how to treat it but her, all with a single lorazepam dose. They're surprisingly safe and you can take quite a bit before you hit od territory. Same class as Valium, known as benzodiazepines. Anything that ends with "pam" is a benzodiazepine and any will do, but lorazepam is the best because it mostly works on the mind. The others help with physical issues as well, so are less effective for hallucinations.
I love how, yes these could be framed just as "What happens if you have too much Acetaminophen" but instead they're framed both as a story and a play by play of the internal chemistry that separates us from the rest of the non-living universe.
You mean as if it was somehow the person entering this alternate world rather than it being presented in a medical video? Maybe that is what medicine really is when the truth is exposed, somethig as scary as this.
That's why I can't grasp how people addicted to hydrocodone don't die . Every vicodin pill has 500mgs of acetaminophen and Brett Favre and the guy from friends said they to 40-70 a day for months and years

Good video--really points out the dangers here. Just in 2014, 78,000 Americans went to the ER due to acetaminophen liver toxicity. 90% of those were because people overdosed or took it with heavy alcohol. Roughly 30,000 were hospitalized, 3,000 required liver transplants, and 300 died. Just in that one year. Respect medications, always.
@@nonyabidness5708 We'd need to ban everything if we held all meds to the same criteria. Over 100K people die every year in the US due to legal drugs that are taken correctly. That does not include drugs that are abused or illegal drugs.
@@nonyabidness5708 No, we need drug education (much like we need sex education, not abstinence training). I'm an alcoholic--I'm aware of that--so I do _not_ take acetaminophen. Many people don't understand drug interactions. So my guess with the other cause of OD on "Tylenol" would be from dextromethorphan use--again, another drug that, if you understand it often comes with acetaminophen, and that that's dangerous in high doses, you can avoid certain medications that have acetaminophen while still having the "active" ingredient you're after (dextromethorphan in this case).

Seriously, i love this channel for this reason. I always knew acetaminophen was toxic to the liver in high doses but never stopped to think what was actually happening. Had no idea it was just the main pathway being overwhelmed and the secondary's metabolites are super toxic. Also never knew about the backup plan to neutralize that metabolite and that's the really interesting part to me. I always assumed they just pumped your stomach and crossed their fingers that too much didn't get absorbed, but nope there's an antidote if you get them there quickly enough.
A really short way to describe these complex things: The body really likes to be stable (homeostasis), and has a number of systems designed to buffer against changes. When something goes beyond the limits of those homeostasis promoting systems, bad things happen.

She was gradually getting less and less sane (mentally), but on the long run, she knew when she was saying gibberish. But when the time came that she didn't know anymore whether she was asleep or not and started losing her balance, I knew that this was brain damage happening, and that it was because of the high amounts of ammonia there. I knew that in her condition, this couldn't be helped, and to know that made me deal with the process so much better. Blessings to your departed mom and you. My dad passed a couple months ago, and hospice was wonderful in educating us in what to expect and what the typical natural processes were. The educational aspect of their care was primary in helping us, because then it felt like what dad was experiencing was to be expected and could be addressed. A significant component of a lot of trauma isn't the actual injury but rather the inability to assess and competently address what's happening. Again, the educational aspect is unbelievably helpful in processing and dealing with stuff. I've had sports injuries that have been on the extremes when it came to knowing what happened: the one where I received lots of actual "care" but very little explanation for what happened made me feel as if I'd been majorly under-served, whereas the one where I received very little care but lots of explanation and education empowered me and greatly reassured me.

What people don't realize is that there's acetaminophen in most Ny Quil type medicines. I've seen people dying from Tylenol overdose and it's not a good way to go.
to be fair, I honestly don't think people nowadays who spent their days scrolling memes would even know what acetaminophen or tylenol in the first place, let alone their side effects, if they did they wont cook their chicken in those and fuck themselves over by eating that
Acetaminophen is very sinister in overdose situations. Once you reach a certain point, the damage is done and there's not much you can do, even if you're stabilized. I had a friend who tried to unalive himself as a teenager using acetaminophen. He lived, but then around five years later, he was found dead in his bedroom, due to issues directly resulting from his overdose many years before.
Why are people so insane for a little noteriety, idk but i dont think death or damage is a cool thing, people have to think critically, damn, too many stories. Great breakdowns Doc. Great explanations.
I remember, as a kid, oh about 30 years ago now, reading about a teen who majorly overdosed on Paracetamol in a suicide attempt. But he changed his mind and called for help. What really horrified me was that it was too late. The process had started and was nothing that doctors could do. He was certain to die. It was just a waiting game. I have Rheumatoid Arthritis, and have spent my whole life taking extremely dangerous medications. But that one article in my grandparents’ Readers Digest drove home a lesson I’ve never forgotten: EVERY medication has the potential to be deadly. I’m still anxious about Acetaminophen/Paracetamol despite taking more infamous, heavily controlled pain medications. I have emergency NARCAN nasal spray on hand if I ever accidentally overdose on my opioid pain meds. In my 20s I lost two friends to prescription drug misuse/abuse. I think that article did better than any lecture from my doctors to impress upon me a respect of the danger of all medications, and may have in some way saved my life. Not all overdoses are the same. But dead is dead.
On the one hand, I absolutely get your fear and it’s legitimate. On the other, as the son of a nurse and pharmacist, it takes a LOT of OTC meds to OD, especially Tylenol. 2 bottles is over 9g of acetaminophen, which is equivalent to 18 500mg pills (which is itself over four times the recommended dose), except even more dangerous given how it metabolizes. You’re absolutely right to respect your meds, but at the same time following directions and talking with your doctor AND pharmacist (my dad has caught errors in the past, which is why he’s there) will keep you safe, as well.
at that point it wasn’t the article and it was the way your brain reacted to it. combined with ur life situation would make u more paranoid of medications than the average person

So opioids are unfortunately a necessary part of my daily life. Getting them is going through a strict series of flaming hoops, but without them I’d be unable to withstand it. Even going off just Advil prior to a recent surgery caused me to become less mobile. I’m lucky to live when and where I do! My wrists are both fused in place, but I have access to the best doctors and can afford it all. Joint replacement is still down the road because I have to start at the shoulders and move down, in order to be able to do recovery exercises properly. And I need to redo my jaw which will take steps. Ugh. More answer than you probably wanted but it’s my life so I get quite chatty, even though typing is hard. Hope that wasn’t tmi! Thanks for asking!
About 15 years ago when I was in high school, there was a disturbing trend of taking entire boxes of Coridicin (OTC cough medicine) to get high. I would love to see your take on that. I specifically remember friends turning bright red/almost covered in hives after taking a handful of pills, as well as them trying to climb walls and acting crazy with hallucinations that lasted for hours. They kept whispering when they talked too, it was weird. Luckily no one i knew died, but one friend ended up in the hospital. I've also heard of dextromethorphan abuse causing Olney's Lesions but idk if there are reliable studies on this yet. Glad that craze has passed. They used to lock up the cough medicines it got so bad in our city!
@@rory1336 My doctors had essentially prescribed me purple drank for over a year until I realized that’s what they had prescribed me. I was sleeping so much during that time. I was basically a bear in hibernation. Oxy+promethazine. 🤦🏻♀️
Yes. Me and my old friends were those idiotic kids. We called them" triple c's) we would get the tiny red sinus tablets and take like 15 eaxh and would be hallucinating. Thank god they put them behind the register counters when peoole caught on.
@@e2e-active712 I'm confused about that because how did they know than that he cooked chicken & that he went to game with hallucinations and a dry mouth and fear of his skin peeling off? He was supposed to be comatose apparently so I don't know how any of that information could have been given if there was no recovery!
Love the contrast between the meme jokes and serious discussion about medicine. Since I’ve started watching I’ve been far more careful with medicine and my health. You’re doing a lot of good for many dumb teen/young adults (myself included)
Thankfully, caring government bureaucrats at the FDA and the superior progressive tolerant folks at Amazon conspired to keep the antidote away from anyone who might need it. Thank god for these loving caring noble rulers.
@@fraxizztv6433 The source is the dude in the video literally telling you he couldn't find a single case of this happening. 1:23 (and slightly before that, but that's where he says this isn't true). The problem with starlitalhpa7's reply is acetaminophen overdoes do happen and this video is really just trying to bring awareness to that. The whole cooking chicken with it is irrelevant. It's a lot easier to believe some idiot would chug two bottles of nyquil when they are sick, because more is better. Or use two different medications (by the label or not) which combined total too much acetaminophen.
Dr. Bernard you are so good at teaching and can present complex matters in such an easy way that even a simple man without any medical knowledge can understand! I always wait for your videos
Its funny, my wife has a PharmD and a PhD, I use these videos so that I can talk to my wife about things she has a passion for. Tomorrow I'm going to ask her to tell me about all the hepatic pathways in the liver.
I really enjoyed this one. I'm sorry to hear what happened to OP, but it struck a cord with me because when I was young I took Way too much cough medication and ended up in the ER and ... It was not good. I was out for days, had to have catheter.. the whole nine yards. I'm lucky to be alive. Don't do stupid stuff guys. Have a great day, and thank God for hospitals and the people who work there
My nurse sister-in-law warned me about acetaminophen (Tylenol) overdose decades ago. Her hospital had just lost a young man to a Tylenol overdose, and he didn't really take what would be considered "a lot". He'd just undergone a dental procedure and was given the pain medicine acetaminophen/codeine (Tylenol 3). He took a dose, but he was still in pain, so he took a couple of over-the-counter pain relievers, which happened to be Tylenol. I don't think he realized that "Tylenol" is the brand name for "acetaminophen". For him, it was enough to cause an overdose, and according to my S-I-L, it shut down his kidneys, and the hospital was unable to save him. I've been very leery and paranoid of Tylenol ever since then.
When you are on prescribed medication, do not take any other drugs without proper research and advice from your doctor. This especially includes over the counter medications. We are not experts on how such drugs interact with each other so it's better to be safe.
@@KillFrenzy96 I remember my mom reading the directions on the bottle every single time she took a pill. I used to think this was silly, but the habit rubbed off on me. I've avoided several drug interactions that would have occurred because my doctor didn't take my other meds into account---read that long paper! Import info.
Bruce Lee died of an aspirin overdose. A single aspirin. That's after they changed the death certificate from the original Coroner's Report that he died of marijuana overdose.
If you had been my chemistry teacher I might have turned up to chemistry. I’ve learnt more about the way chemicals act in the body from binge-watching this channel than from any highschool I made it too. It’s fascinating to me as I have a severe chronic illness that requires me to take a variety of heavy dose medications… I picture them floating around my body and brain like little chains of hexagons now.
Jesus Christ loves you! ♥️know♥️ 1 John 5 KJV 13 These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God. 1 Corinthians 15 KJV 1 Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; 2 By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. 3 For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; 4 And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures: Romans 3 KJV 25 Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God;
Thank you for doing this one. Yes the meme is old, but by using it as an example the FDA accidentally accidentally popularized it. What so many people don’t realize is even if it’s meant as a dumb joke, it can come back and get popular years later, causing irretrievable harm.
the FDA announced a lot of things. If you decided to pay attention to this one stupid joke and to not listen to the warning, then you deserve to win the Darwin award.
Nice to know that five and a half years later, we can all agree OP is a real goober for making sleepytime chicken to get internet points. Thanks for making this video; I'm honestly just astonished that it's gotten to this point, all things considered, and it's nice to see a proper video covering the potential health issues caused by this. 100/10
@@Nothing-pb8hu OP is also an acronym for "Original Poster". That being said, I was referring to the OP of the 4chan screencap that I'm pretty sure started it all - back in 2017, someone made a massive thread revolving around him making and eating "sleepytime chicken" that was just outright chicken breast boiled in Nyquil, along with some other medically-dangerous things. In fact, I'm pretty sure at least a couple of the images that were spreading around to kick the trend off in the first place came from that thread.
@@ThatOneFriendlyDude I never heard of the "sleepytime chicken" before now, but there was an "Allegra chicken" post on Twitter a few years ago. The poster @-ed Allegra, who gave a corporate-speak reply translating to "WTF?" I'm guessing it was inspired by the "sleepytime" meme.
hearing even just a slight mention of serotonin syndrome makes me kinda happy it’s being mentioned on a big platform . my mom had it and idk what she was hallucinating but she kept calling out to her mom and it was so sad to see . other than cough syrup or what was mentioned in the video, Tylenol with certain antidepressants can also cause this . such as mirtazapine
@@Angelcatsun thank you, you’re fine!! yeah, i can get what u mean . if you’re ever taking multiple meds it’s good to search up “(medicine name) interaction with (other medicine name”
Yep. I was on Effexor for anxiety back in 2011. That winter, I had a cold w a sinus infection. I had been taking Sudafed, plus Tylenol for headache pain. BAD. I had a seizure at work & an ambulance transport to the hospital. Serotonin toxicity. I’ve had lingering symptoms since then - mild & intermittent aphasia. I don’t wish what happened to me on anyone & I certainly learned a huge lesson about just mixing meds without understanding how they interact.🤦🏻♀️ I’m no longer on any anxiety meds, so that takes away a big part of the problem. But, damn. I never even knew about serotonin toxicity, never heard of it, before I had it.
I take mirtazepine and occasionally take Tylenol and have never experienced this. I am on 3 anti depressants and adderall for add, seretonin syndrome is my worst fear.
@@tailorforeman7082 Can I ask why are you doing it? Don't take it in a bad way, just curious. Can't imagine why would anyone combine medicaments like that.
I had a toxic acetaminophen overdose on 2010 that they didn’t think I was going to pull through from, I was in the hospital for nearly a month and nearly needed a liver transplant and dialysis for my kidneys but somehow made “A recovery “ (as our good Doc here says” people have no idea how dangerous Tylenol/acetaminophen can really be , it’s better to be safe than sorry. It’s a terrible tragedy that happens far too often, always be cautious with what medications you take-prescription or otherwise!!!! ❤️ Love your videos-I binge on them over and over!
@@michaelmichael2382 Not something I would typically talk about on RU-vid or to anyone normally but for the sake of community awareness and safety of others, it was intentional. I was at a devastatingly low point in my life that in my eyes I thought I had no other option. People that can survive a near fatal attempt like I did often can look back if they do get the right help and know that it wouldn’t have made the lives of those around me better, or would have made it worse, but in those moments you don’t think it will, you think of yourself as a burden, that the only solution is you out of the equation. It’s a tragic reality but that is the mindset. My only reason to even tell my tale is that maybe it will reach even one person that feels like that, and it will remind them that life gets better, things will get easier. People love you and you matter. I’ve since gotten married, had a third child (I had two at the time) and have bought a house. Things aren’t always perfect, but I try to remember that life can always get better and people are always there for you-people you may not even know or realize are there for you! So yeah, that’s my story. It was October 1st 2010, so 12 years in a few days
Been there, didn't do that by the skin of my teeth. Kudos to you not only for the recovery, but for learning how to look beyond the times that seem so utterly soul crushing. Second the motion, folks...get help sooner than later!
Great video chubby! I loved watching these videos with my sister. She would always share these with me. I miss her greatly. Whenever you upload, I feel as though a piece of her is still alive. Thank you :)
I once drank half a bottle of NyQuil just to fall asleep. Granted I was very drunk (before the NyQuil) but I somehow snapped out of whatever trance that put me in, and I remember walking to the bathroom, but it felt like I was walking in quicksand. Never did that again, and I haven't touched either night-time medicine or alcohol in almost four years.
@@stevenfreebairn2553 Well, truth be told, that wasn't what pushed me to change. That experience happened in 2007. Something unrelated happened in January 2019 that was the final straw. The only reason I haven't touched night time medicine is just because a lot of it contains a percentage of alcohol, so yeah. I wanted and got alcohol out of my life.
Well at least you gave a little credit and didn’t call a meme warrior a mouth breather… Also, this is why you keep your eyes on your home grown spuds! Leaving one alone and allowing it to do whatever it wants it tends to die from stupid.
