The Chosen S2, E4 - John‬ ‭5:2‬ -13 NKJV‬‬
2 Now there is in Jerusalem by the Sheep Gate a pool, which is called in Hebrew, Bethesda, having five porches.
‭‭3 In these lay a great multitude of sick people, blind, lame, paralyzed, waiting for the moving of the water.
4 For an angel went down at a certain time into the pool and stirred up the water; then whoever stepped in first, after the stirring of the water, was made well of whatever disease he had.
5 Now a certain man was there who had an infirmity thirty-eight years.
‭‭6 When Jesus saw him lying there, and knew that he already had been in that condition a long time, He said to him, “Do you want to be made well?”
‭‭7 The sick man answered Him, “Sir, I have no man to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up; but while I am coming, another steps down before me.”
‭‭8 Jesus said to him, “Rise, take up your bed and walk.”
‭‭9 And immediately the man was made well, took up his bed, and walked. And that day was the Sabbath.
‭‭10 The Jews therefore said to him who was cured, “It is the Sabbath; it is not lawful for you to carry your bed.”
‭‭11 He answered them, “He who made me well said to me, ‘Take up your bed and walk.’ ”
‭‭12 Then they asked him, “Who is the Man who said to you, ‘Take up your bed and walk’?”
‭‭13 But the one who was healed did not know who it was, for Jesus had withdrawn, a multitude being in that place.

I love this guy’s reaction the Pharisee’s threat. He knows that God has given him something that he hasn’t had in a long time, possibly ever: The freedom to walk. To make his own choices and live his life. And when the Pharisee tries to put him down for committing a petty violation (One that is pretty much violating on a daily basis by the Pharisees themselves no less), he responds how we all would: Who cares?! I’m walking!! Praise God!

This particular healing beside the pool of Bethesda is one of my favourite. It has a powerful message laced with so much of emotion and so beautifully expressed. We often look forward hopelessly to the things of the world to change our destiny. And we often blame people for standing in our way or getting there before us and obstructing our progress. The character of Jesus here beautifully puts it...there is nothing left for you here in this pool. You don't need it. You need me.....look at me.

I know the creator actively engaged Jewish Messianic teachers as consultants for the series. He wanted to make sure it captured the authentic jewish perspective and view which is great. Some christian series in the past have ostrasized jewish people (even though Jesus and all his disciples were Jewish). Here its great how they have showed the contrast with in the group and included everyone.

Dazzled by weekly Christian brainwashing, it's too bad you never check Bible facts. Zero proof of the early Jews, so before 950 BCE, everything was made up, Buttercup. Same with waiting twenty centuries for the son of a virgin. The bar owners back then decided to have the squares go to bed early Saturday night, so they could sell a lot more booze -without your momma being there, cuz she had to get up and look beautiful. We keep this cult alive and love the Saturday night antics, without our mommas being there to damp the thrills. OK Rube?

4:52-5:02 I find this few second scene so profound, the actors facial expression does something so phenomenal here but subtle to notice. (this is truly an amazing actor). When he hears he can be healed his eyes fill with hope, he smiles huge, his eyes twinkle, but when Jesus says the words “Get up, Pick up your Matt and Walk”, his face remains still, his eyebrows are slightly furrowed showing he is hurt. Which is a very normal reaction, he is staring in disbelief, trying to understand if he heard that right bc, how can this man offer to heal him and then tell him, someone who cannot walk to walk. he is trying to see if the hope he just had makes sense, But as he continues to stare, his eyebrows furrowed, his eyebrows suddenly drop, (and it’s a very slight thing here to be noticed), his eyes widen, and it shows that he realized JESUS was serious, he realized that Jesus was not laughing, or changing the initial offer he gave playing with hope, he was truly asking him to get up and walk with complete serious and sincerity in his eyes, so in faith the paralyzed man listened to his word and did. The actor through his facial expression portrayed a VERY human reaction. Some people just show the getting up and standing but that look of shock and hurt and confusion slowly turn into faith was very human. i don’t even know how someone could act like that! Great scene!!

The essence of resting on the Sabbath was that God rested from His labors during the week of creation on the 7th day, and bade us follow His good example. This rest was a blessing, not a burden! A respite from labor, and one that came with practical exceptions, such as if one's animal were trapped in a ditch, it was permissible to lift it out on the Sabbath, and not let it die by waiting up to 24 hours. The oral tradition, an invention of the human mind, a human interpretation, placed a hedge around God's perfect Law, one supposedly intended to 'make sure' and not transgress (but really to empower the hypocritical, stricter-than-God interpreters), and converted "rest from working" to "you are sinning if you transport an object from one domain to another." God never said 'transport' or 'domain' or any of that made-up nonsense. He simply said to rest.

Interesting. Shabbat (The Sabbath). So what is considered work on the Sabbath? Rest from work. Okay. Again what is considered work? Can you mow the lawn on the Sabbath if you consider it relaxing? Driving a car to the lake or amusement park? Cooking dinner or making breakfast or lunch? Going hiking? Riding a bike or going fishing?
@benscoles5085
@benscoles5085 Год назад
in the town I grew up in, it was work if money was handled, or a store was open, but a place to eat was not work, as a lot of people after church went out to eat Sunday lunch, and I gathered eggs on Sunday on my uncles farm, he had 20,000 chickens, and that was ok, but we could not work in the field, or buy gas, or a coke from a grocery store, that was bad, so even 2000 years later the true definition of ''work'' had not be established. the man who walked up and said, ''You can not do this'' was in essence ''working'' so he is in the wrong too by those standards, much hypocrisy is evident.
@jaanabanana7048
@jaanabanana7048 Год назад
In Exodus 16, Shabbat (or Sabbath) rest which is first introduced by God in the beginning chapters of Genesis, is given more detail through the law of Moses if your interested in how it was observed back then, and haven’t already studied it! I personally, however, encourage every brother and sister to observe how Jesus himself interacts with the Sabbath. Jesus is our example of how the law is fulfilled in Him, and yet He points us to the heart behind the laws. (If I may warn though... always remember that God given rest is true rest. Be careful no one reduces it to a burden to bear. In my own life, I’ve been so prone to viewing things legalistically, that I was once trapped in a doctrine that kept me in fear. But Galatians 5 is good passage that deals with that subject, on the small chance that you share a tendency like mine.) God bless! :)

@@mikehawk4714 There is evidence of God’s love and existence all around you, it’s up to you whether you choose to acknowledge it or not. Just as a building lets us know there was a builder, creation is evidence of a Creator. @@mikehawk4714 That’s fair enough. ☺️ My only advice is to go into a private room and pray to God with an honest heart, pray for God to reveal His truth to you. @@mikehawk4714 Now you wait and persist in your search for knowledge of God and His scriptures. If you have asked God to reveal himself to you with a genuine and open heart, He will reveal His love and truth to you. I spent about 15+ years seeking, talking and asking questions to all types of people from many different faiths, religions and backgrounds. I conversed to many Christians, Roman Catholics, Sheiks, Muslims & Imams, Jehovah’s Witnesses, Agnostics and Spiritualists (which covers a broad range of beliefs like the worship of nature, witches, pagans & crystals etc.). I even had in-depth discussions about Faith and religions with Atheists; you would be surprised by how much some Atheists can know about religions and scripture etc. However, it was my experience that they were the more arrogant and dismissive out of the bunch to have this discussion with. Though, I believe that it was their dismissive attitude towards God and Faith which is what drove me to seek God further because how can someone who claims to believe in no God have so much hatred and disdain for God which they claim to not believe in? 🤦 haha. My journey to discovering God’s truth (Though the Bible says that God sought me out, not I him.) is a much longer story, but I believe I have written quite a lot here as it is. If you genuinely have questions about God, faith and religion, PM me, and we can discuss this further? “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened. (Matthew 7:7-8 NIV)

This was a powerful scene except when one disciple pulled a notebook. The disciples at that time didn't even know what was going on or who Jesus actually was. Also, the earliest account of the gospel was Mark's and he wasn't one of the twelve
@Wisdomisgood448
@Wisdomisgood448 2 года назад
They are giving credence to John - where this account is actually written. It's not in Mark. So John must have seen it first hand and recorded it.
@alexdelosreyes6076
@alexdelosreyes6076 2 года назад
@@Wisdomisgood448 Again, Nooooone of the disciples knew what was going on or who Jesus really was. Why would anyone of the twelve record it? They had no motive to do so. That's the very reason the gospels were a bit later because there was a need for it. The Christian community was growing and there was a need of an account written for the benefit of those who cannot hear it by word of mouth.
@Wisdomisgood448
@Wisdomisgood448 2 года назад
@@alexdelosreyes6076 That is your assumption however. You simply can't know if None of the original twelve at least took notes on certain events. John or even Luke for example. I was simply pointing out that that incident is found in John - not Mark. John saw it first hand. You also must remember that at this point Jesus had performed many miracles- so the disciples most likely started to understand at least somewhat who Jesus really was. Again, we can't for sure know what the Apostles thought but to just say John making a note of the miracle, since it's found in the book of John- is wrong is going a little far.

@@Wisdomisgood448 You're not getting me either so I suggest you study bible history. Mark was the first synoptic gospel among the 3, Luke (who was Mary's physician, thus most of his gospel was about Jesus' healing ministry and has detailed account about the Nativity story) and Matthew (who was learned because of his job) definitely based their accounts on Mark's who was Peter's disciple who was supposed to come with Paul and Barnabas. John is what we call the spiritual gospel. It was written in 70-100 AD. Almost the same time of Revelation, so most probably these recollections was not written by old man John himself but by dictation to someone when he was in Patmos Island. Lastly. They did not know who Jesus was. None of the Jews did. Because they were expecting a military Messiah. If they knew who Jesus really was they wouldn't run away the way they did that night. But only after the Holy Spirit came down that all was revealed and so this time around, they were prepared to die for Jesus even after He ascended to heaven. I am sorry. But insisting the disciples wrote diaries does not make sense and also seems to pursue that the bible is a word-for-word accurate account (which is obviously a pro-sola scriptura kind of idea).

@@alexdelosreyes6076 ah, now we see arrogance from you? The biggest issue here is that you are making a big deal out of something that doesn't even contradict scripture. The point I was making is that you simply cannot know if Someone took notes during Jesus ministry. You are arguing something that isn't even found in Scripture. That's the problem. The books were written years later yes, but notes could have been taken whenever. If you throw such a fit over them showing One disciple taking notes...that's a problem.

As a Muslim, although we believed that Jesus ascended to heaven before the crucifixion, you cannot help but tear up at the suffering of a person who, has been punished onna Roman instrument. Peace be upon Jesus on the day he was born, on the day he returns, and on the day he ascends to the Lord.

What has Jesus done in your eyes to deserve to return and pass judgment, if he is not the ram God provided as a sin offering for the world and another was forced to die in his place in a cruel trick? What has he done deserving of so singular an honor? Is he honored for having been a trickster who deceived his enemies and left another man to die? Is that the singular thing for which he deserves to judge mankind on the last day? Ask Allah, "Why is Jesus chosen to be judge over all? What did he do to deserve this honor?" Tell me what He says.

One of the best example of Jesus’ compassion for our encouragement. But the poetic license of the producer is misapplied where it shows a disciple taking notes in a book like tablet. There is evidence that Christians actually invented this particular form in the first or second century A.D.
