“For the love of god, we keep buying books and not reading them!” I just ordered five books online and I’m reading books currently borrowed from the library/ my friend, so thank you Noelle for rightly calling me out lol!
Brené Brown narrates her audiobooks and I HIGHLY recommend the audio because it’s like being in the room with her. And just putting in a plug (as a therapist with 3/4 of those books on my own TBR), when we give clients books or book recommendations, it’s because they make us think of you and because we think you’ll enjoy/connect with them (and maybe a little because we want someone who will get it to talk about the content with 😂). I never give someone a book that’s going to push them to confront things we haven’t already been talking about, but I think sometimes feeling like someone wants you to read something might feel like they’re focusing on flaws or skill deficits, and can bring up shame. I don’t know your therapist, but I can pretty much guarantee you won’t disappoint her by not reading or not liking the books, and (knowing your reading taste) you’re probably going to get sucked right into them. Forget the shoulds, aim for approaching them with curiosity when you’re ready. They’re not homework, you don’t have to master the content, and no one will quiz you on them, and you don’t even have to think about yourself when you read them. Take what resonates, leave the rest, and if you hate them, you can always DNF them 😘💕
I love Noelle, I love her laugh, I love her spunky personality and I love her book recs! One of my absolute favorite people to watch, thank you for the wonderful video today!!!
Sea of Tranquility was phenomenal! Basically like sinking to a hot bubble bath with her writing. If you can, I recommend reading in long sittings because the small details and character interactions (and world-building) just build on each other really satisfyingly that way.
"tell me everything i don't remember: the stroke that changed my life" i think qualifies as spring memoir because it's all about healing and regrowth! :-)
I‘m reading the first of the Anne of Green Gabels books right now and I feel like that is definitely a spring book. Lots of beautiful descriptions of nature.
oh my god noelle what you said about feeling like you have things figured out and then a panic attack happening and you go "oh god i still need help" is SOOOO RELATABLE. every time i would spiral into some really low lows after feeling pretty good for a little bit i would always think "my biggest mistake was thinking i was finally okay" cause then its like WORSE cause im somehow blindsided!!! constant nourishment is so necessary and i also need to remember and embrace that
I just want to say that your editing is always immaculate. I don't ever feel like I could have skipped something. I also have a tendency to watch videos on 1.5x speed but your videos are so well paced that I watch them "normally". It's very enjoyable to listen to you explain things as well so the long videos are always welcome.
you are truly so refreshing! i love how open you are about going to therapy and talking about mental health in general and tbh you really don’t here people talk about it so normalized like you do and i really appreciate that!
"Sea of Tranquility" ~ YESSSSS!!! Just read it last weekend, in one sitting. Its teeny but impactful and gave me one of the worst book hangovers I've ever had. I'll probably read it again, actually because I think I might get more out of it the second time around. I hope you love it too.
@@molliee5183 Yes! I have read Station Eleven and loved it. I think this book isn't anything like that one plot-wise, other than all the characters are transient - travelling to somewhere else. I'd say its typical Emily St. John Mandel writing, but Sea of Tranquility leans MUCH more into speculative fiction- so if you aren't into a story that asks more questions than it answers, this may not be to your taste. I am biased though, because she's one of my favourite writers of all time. If you didn't like Station Eleven, you might like The Glass Hotel, which is entirely different also and I found moves along at a good pace. Happy reading. :)
I just finished it on Thursday and it was so good! Read the last 150 pages in one long sitting because I needed to immerse myself in her writing and all the small details. I still haven't started a new fiction book yet (unusual for me) because of it :D
I read “Orchard House” last spring and it was so good! It is all about a mother daughter relationship and how they come back to each other over gardening and fixing up the mom’s house. So sweet and feel good!
Sooo glad to see Somebody's Daughter in this TBR!! I was going to suggest it when you asked for memoir recs. I loved this one so much and Ashley C. Ford is just an incredible person.
i just finished the house in the cerulean sea and it gave me major spring vibes!! the cover is beautiful and the writing just feels so vibrant :) definitely one of my new favs!!
Boundaries. Boy do I ever know that word. 54 and just set boundaries and omg how empowered I feel. This girl took back her power today. Don't wait as long as I did. Love your channel BTW.
Some memoirs I love: - In Order to Live by Yeonmi Park - Beautiful Country by Qian Julie Wang - The Ugly Cry by Danielle Henderson - Finding Freedom by Erin French - The Best We Could Do by Thi Bui (graphic novel)
My mess is a bit of a life is the best anxiety memoir I’ve read. Just so relatable and has a positive spin on anxiety. Not “woe is me” a really funny, positive read. Also the audiobook for it was great 😊
I loved the Caraval series! If you read the spin-off then it will spoil how the other one ends, so I think it depends on if you want to read the other series or not. I personally love the other series- it’s about sisters and romance and family and her writing is such a delight! ☺️
So excited you picked up Once Upon a Broken Heart!! I would suggest reading the Caraval trilogy before reading that though, just because Once Upon a Broken Heart relies on context from the previous series, especially for the leading male protagonist. Plus the Caraval series is just a fun time, the first 2 books especially (imo :))
Just finished reading “Yours Cruelly,” Elvira’s autobiography, and it was great. Would recommend it if you’re looking for a book about a life that is very unique. Although, I guess it doesn’t fit the theme of spring, but Halloween is in our hearts all year long.
I read once upon a broken heart without reading caraval and I LOVED it! I don’t know if I spoiled myself for things on accident but you can definitely jump right in and understand all of it
just kids is one of my all time favs and i adore patti smith’s writing sooo so much!! i can’t wait for you to experience it (but beware, it’s devastating at times) 💛
thank you for always putting closed captions. i like to keep them on because it helps me focus on what you’re saying. so thank you for always putting the time to include them :)
I'm 34, and I only starting setting boundaries last year, and IT WAS SO SCARY and I have SUCH a long way to go still. But I am so proud of myself and accepting that my happiness should be a priority to.
i HAVE to recommend open water idk if you’ve read it already but it’s a gorgeous romance about an artsy couple in the south of london and the writing is so amazing. it reminds me of every time i’ve been into london, and also of warmer weather, of the smell and the sunshine and aaaaa. it’s so good !! not a memoir but is vaguely autobiographical :)
I’m currently reading Yolk for the first time and enjoying it. I’m really just trying to catch up on my TBR that was abandoned during my university years, including Hamnet which I’m adoring!
Demi Moore’s memoir, Inside Out, was fascinating to me. From her childhood to her acting career and her marriages and onto her children and their relationships, this book covers it all. She talks about the love of her life and when I found out who it was, I was very surprised! Love your videos! 😊
Noelle! from one person whose therapist made them read Brené Brown books to another (lmao), I just wanted to let you know that the audiobooks are great! the ones I listened to were also narrated by her personally, which was awesome. 😊💜
I'm so excited to hear your thoughts on YOLK. I read this twice in the span of 6 months. I loved it and I can't wait to see what else the author puts out
I read Piranesi this week and I was blown away!!!! It's seriously so good, I'm excited for you guys to read it. I'm tempted to read Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell now even though its like 5x the length 👀👀
My big book fear is too real for me to attempt to read Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrel. But I agree with you 100% about Piranesi. It was absolutely fantastic!
i think goodbye, again by jonny sun fits the description of "springtime memoir" to a t. okay, so it's not /exactly/ a memoir but it often reads like one and it's so touching and well written and springtime and growth mindset-y! so much of it is abt plants! it has lovely little doodles in it! and it's also about equating productivity with self-worth which u talked about in this video! and it's a pretty quick read too! i highly highly highly recommend
I loved reading the Offing in April. It was the perfect time for me to read it and the „plot“ also really started in April and it was wonderful spring vibes in my opinion.
Manual for cleaning women is absolutely fascinating! It's very observational, like spying on people from afar. It highlights the most insightful things about mundane behaviors. Also, the author's life story is one hell of a rollercoaster - the book kinda represents her life, fictionalized. Great video, awesome colors, we love to see it 🌷🌞 ps. As a fellow gal struggling with mental health, thanks for sharing your experience. It ain't easy to do that, but it's much, much appreciated. 🤍
Spring-y books: The Secret Garden, Pride and Prejudice, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, The Camomile Lawn, Brother of the More Famous Jack, The Enchanted April
Once Upon a Broken Heart is by far one of my favorite books this year! The Caraval series is sooo good. You definitely have to read the series first as Once Upon a Broken Heart happens after the events of the series and references back quite often.
Noelle thank you for reviewing a wide selection of books a jotted a few down to read! Btw your commentary on books your therapist wants you to read & anxiety had my dying lol I’m in the same boat! I’ve got a tbr book from my therapist to read, I may also reads yours on boundaries & the anxiety book. Happy Reading!
Oh it's always a dang Good Friday when I see you've posted! The Gifts of Imperfection truly is a ✨gift✨. It was so so good. I also picked up Once Upon A Broken Heart after seeing your haul and everyone's comments! I'm so excited to get to it!
Delicacy by Katy Wix is a TOP TIER memoir in my opinion. About grief and her struggles with body image, told through a collection of memories themed around cake. Hard to explain but it’s funny and sad and beautiful 💜
Yolk was wonderful!! I hope you enjoy all your spring reads. I’m just focusing on books with colorful covers. Reading Hamnet now because of your vlog. 🧡💚💛
Ugh lmao. I’m 30 seconds in and you’ve already made me laugh 5 times 😂 you’re seriously so great. The best. I love and appreciate your books ❤️ hope you’re doing well Noelle!
Yes! I am also looking for more Westerns after watching Yellowstone and 1883. I adored Where the Lost Wander by Amy Harmon and want more like that and 1883. Stories about The Oregon Trail are my thing these days. I put The Thousand Crimes of Ming Tsu on my TBR. Looking forward to hearing what you think of it.
MEN WE REAPED!! Love that this book has found its way to you! Was going to recommend you read it (or anything else she has written). A Powerful, moving, disturbing book.
The Gifts of Imperfection was therapist recommended to me too! I found it super helpful and want to re-read it soon. Brene Brown narrates her audiobooks too and it's a really easy listen (it felt kinda like a long podcast or chat for me).
nedra's book is required reading for everyone. you said it best - it's hard to set boundaries when you're struggling to determine what your boundaries are. i basically feel like adulthood is figuring out what i will tolerate and what i will not tolerate through trial and error. lol i hope you do read it!
