Late to this video, but soooo much to love. Your commitment to your joke about your thumbs, then as I'm laughing, pulling back and commenting on the fact that you went out of your way for the bit. You're commitment to seeing it through even when it was kicking your ass. Then saying how funny it would be to have as a movie voice over, then having one. The sheer joy and happiness on your face when you were holding your first lathed piece. Just so great. All of it the project idea, video everything. And you so managed to verbalize a feeling about learning/using a new tool that I've felt but never thought about Now I realize that I've been chasing that dragon for so long, without ever realizing it. It explains so many of the random assortment of skills and tools I've acquired. Now that I realize what I've been doing, I can now actively pursue it and double down! (I'm not quite sure if that's. Good thing or not, I guess time will tell, lol)

I appreciate you mentioning which tools you're "most scared of". I don't think there are many examples of truly effective and creative makers who provide such an authentic look at what making things can be like. I've been putting off finishing a project because I am scared of using a particular tool on my own. I guess I never realized people familiar with the tools can be scared of them and still work with them anyways, like that was normal. Seems silly now that I think of it.

To be honest, even as a little home DIY'er- not really having used any big workshop tools and mostly just various sizes of hand-held ones: having that fear is a good thing because it shows you respect the tool and what it can do- especially if it's mishandled! Hopefully you've finished that project and have a little more confidence with the showstopping tool! :3

I've been using powertools for many years, but I get a little nervous every time I turn on my big band saw. What if the blade breaks when I activate the second step and it goes at full speed. Nothing happens if it breaks, I know that. But a speeding 188"x1½" blade can seem a little scary. Dangerous tool requires respect, they will win if you forget it.

Hello there Antoine Delaporte , I’m Trent OFlaherty responding to your reply of this wonderful piece of engineering . I too have no engineering degree but am dog-legged determined to try finishing off an awkward piece . My math is a tad short of correct usage of part formula & as one person past mentioned finding the cosec would give me more accurate measurements than having them all close to - ( ie North Pole ) in Spherical Trig. My project is marking out an 11 equally spaced hendecagon . Although I believe this poss , I’m marking around a sphere rad 84 of which I believe would be made easier if it was some multiple of 5 or 10 considering the square root of 5 is used in pentagons. My icsohedron is much like this lady’s project above. I’m at a very close result however I am curious if my sphere should be different size for a starter. Due to my wood turning, measurement is critical as I’m reducing each of the 11 spines numerical order in antipodes -mainly for counterbalancing . I’d like to send some pictures if you can assist as this is not the norm . Trent O’Flaherty - - ptoflaherty@ yahoo.com.au

Extreamly well desiged table! One thing, to reduce the sweat and reduce the wear and teat, you can reduce the friction by adding parafine (rub a candle stick) in the slots. It is an old way to prevent drawers to get stuck. It works well on zippers too.
@tomdowling4810
@tomdowling4810 2 года назад
Also, a sliding extension on the handles would be an aid if the paraffin is not sufficient.

My dad and I did this when we made a sliding spice rack for my mom. Only problem was that the only candles we could find (that my mom wouldn't eat us alive for using) were blue and white striped birthday candles, so the inside of the slide mechanism looked like a kid had drawn on it in blue crayon and then tried to clean it up, but did a bad job.

@Jaessae
@Jaessae 2 года назад
As you should. One tip, if you or someone around you ever turns stainless steel, keep a strict no touching policy with bare hands for the shavings. This goes obviously for all metal shavings, but stainless steel especially. Also especially when it is a long shaving that is even in the slightest under tension, don't even touch it with gloves. It can literally take the tip of your finger off and cut to the bone.

@DavidLindes
@DavidLindes 2 года назад
@@Jaessae Yikes, really? Just loads of weird tension in them, or what? :-o
@Jaessae
@Jaessae 2 года назад
@@DavidLindes No, luckily not. They are very sharp. The kind of sharp where you get a cut and only notice it later when blood seeps out of the fine cuts. The tension is especially relevant if it is still attached to the piece, like when you are turning on the lathe, and a really long shaving is created. That way it has one fixed point at least. Kind of like a taut bit of string? You can cut soft stuff with it. Or a wire based cake cutter. Can also act like a whip when attched on one end.
