Every era has its famous figures--Marylin Monroe, Charles Dickens, Elvis Presley, Voltaire--and the middle ages was no different. In the twelfth century Rhineland, one German nun was especially well known and was consulted for advice due to her unique divine gift. But beyond this, she was also a scientific and medical writer, a musical composer, a theologian, a reformer, a miracle worker, and even invented her own language and writing system. This woman was Hildegard of Bingen.

The " Hildegarde von Blingen' " channel (yes, that's the way it's spelled, apostrophe and all) features a woman with an ethereal voice who sings and arranges popular songs in a Medieval style, "Bardcore". She has also performed some of the actual Hildegard's music. It's all very lovely. I believe the creator also does the Medieval-style drawings that accompany the songs.

I am a herbalist and a colleague introduced me to her work in health a few years ago. She was then instrumental in my return to the Catholic Church! Loved your summary on her life. I have a few of her books and will go back to reading them again as you just inspired me to get to know her work more deeply. She is an amazing woman in so many ways and I love the was a fellow herbalist. Do you have a favourite book of hers? 🕊️

I somehow discovered Hildegard's music years ago, and then a relative did some genealogical work on our family, and I learned that I have a maternal ancestor from Staudernheim, a village not very far from Disibodenberg. I was excited about that very distant connection to Hildegard.

It's from a medieval copy of the Psychomachia (war of the soul) which was a poem by the late antique Christian author Prudentius. It's an allegorical story about a war between the virtues and vices (most of which are personified as women, in part due to the fact that most of the words for these virtues in Latin are feminine nouns, but it's also interesting to think of in terms of ideas about gender) I'm glad you enjoyed the video!

I absolutely love your historical content. I sure hope you will gather more of a following soon. I especially like your further reading recommendations. For an even more academic approach, I personally would appreciate seeing sources on the lower bottom of the video. Not a must, of course, rarely anyone does this. But it would make it easier for an academic audience to check for accuracy. Thank you, I am subscribed now.

I'm glad you enjoy my videos! I have contemplated having direct "footnotes" in them, but ultimately I've decided to go the more encyclopedic route with the recommended readings kind of like you'd see reading the encyclopedia Britannica. A big part of that is just how much more time it would take and I figure that the majority of my RU-vid audience are approaching it more casually anyway, while I include recommendations for those who want to look into it deeper or have a more academic interest.

She may have named the character after her and been inspired by her, but Outlander takes place about 600 years after Hildegard of Bingen's time

I'm not a believer, formally, but Hildegard is an interesting person. She was quite " progressive " for her time especially in a largely patriarchal milieu. Not an average person or nun.
