I had the SUNSUN HW-5000 for almost 2-years and here is my opinion on people hating on this filter. #SUNSUNHW5000 #FX6 p.s. someone sent me a video on how bad the sunsun hw-5000 . that way i did this video.
I’ve been scared to try any of the sunsuns because of all the controversy. I finally gathered my courage and bought a HW-3000 for one of my 75 gallon tanks and let me tell you, these things are so quiet! It’s exactly what I was looking for coming from the loud HOB filters That rattled constantly. And keep in mind I have all 12 of my aquariums in my bedroom, so it was driving me insane! The filter held 4 to 5 baskets of media and filtration pads and does a phenomenal job keeping my tank clean. I’ve haven’t ran into any problems with it yet. I think it’s a great filter and I plan to buy sunsuns for the rest of my tanks.
I was using the HW5000 for over two years, until recently. I had issues right from the start, battled them for a while, but finally decided to let it go. First, the water hoses started leaking - instead of glueing them, I decided to replace them with hoses I bought at a garden centre. Then the valves started leaking; I bought new ones, but the new ones were even worse, they leaked immediately after I'd put then on, so I left the old ones on - as long as I didn't touch them, the leaks were more or less under control. But about a month ago the filter started catching a lot of air, became very noisy with all the sounds of flowing water and air inside and its throughput decreased a lot. Whenever I turned it off it released A LOT of air bubbles through the suction hose. I dismantled it about six times, checking the connections and seals and applying Vaseline; I even removed both valves (thinking the air gets through them) and attached the hoses directly to the water inlet / outlet - to no avail. Finally, I gave up and carried it to the garage and that's where it has been sitting since then. It was OK as a filter, while it worked, I admit, but it was riddled with issues as well and I guess it;s no coincidence it's not on sale any more. I ain't no hater, I wish it would keep on working, but I'm done with it.

I've been running the hob that came with my 55 gallon tank for like 4 months now. It has kept my water crystal clear and none of my fish have died or gotten sick because of parameter spikes in these 4 months. Keep in mind that it was a NEW tank! Everything was absolutely new and even like this i added fish after the first week and things have been crystal clear and lively for me. In these 4 months I popped the filter pads out of my hob like 6 times and rinsed them with my shower head. My tank has 14 fish. I am not trying to say hob bests canister filters. What am I trying to say here? Any filter can be a great filter depending on the fish keeper and how he/she maintains the tank and filter. Do your water changes vacuum your gravel and check your parameters on routine schedule. Filters are there to help us maintain our tanks and they will not do all the work for us. There is no need to get what is trending or what is considered the best. Sometimes a knock off product will perform just as good or even better than what's currently hot on the market. This dude here is living proof of that. There is no better comparison than one coming from a man that is not biased and likes to try different things.
What hurts people is that they paid a fortune and that there is a cheaper filter that does the same, not to mention the concept that everything Chinese is bad. Greetings from Peru
And not to mention, in countries like Australia the FX 6 cost $1k plus, the Hw-3000 sub $200 and the Hw-5000 is $350 I literally have a FX 5 and 4 sitting outside because both would just stop working
I have running 3 FX6 , 2 FX 4 and 1 FX 2 doing a great job , would love to try a sun sun HW-5000 but its not easy to get in the Netherlands, great video btw

Yes that a good move the Fx6 is a good filter i have 4 now in Canada you cannot get SUNSUN HW HERE and there not parts to be found.to repair them .it still a go filter .make sure you can get parts have a good night its 12:55 am here.

People are always going to hate no matter what I think your tanks look amazing and your filters no matter which ones are doing a great job I also have a son son 704 B and I run Marineland
I have not had one issue and I've had it for a year. The only issue I had which wasn't a major one was that the gasket around the top got stretched so I ordered two extra ones replaced it and problem solved no more air bubbles. Other than that it is an amazing canister filter. I have it side-by-side with my Fluval fx6 in it not only keeps up I think it outperforms.
FX6 loyalists just pissed that they spent so much money when the hype was high lmao. Each one of them living in the sunk cost fallacy, they already spent so much now they’re willing to die on their hill to prove they’re right 😂

Hi I'm in agreement about the sun sun. My fx6 bolts on lid de threaded. My sun sun hw5000 occasionally gets a error code but the water flow is better and the filtration is better and as u say its easier to clean. So thumbs up to sun sun
Hello Tommy, great video. A couple of questions: 1) Do you know where can I purchase a Sunsun HW-5000? Amazon used to carry them but have not been available for quite a while now. 2) I know that this was not the point of the video but how did you deal with nitrates for a month without water changes?
@@daneayers7483 This what you do turn both valve off the open the drain as the water is coming out .when the water stop take off the first valve off the water will start coming out. then take the second valve off and drain the tank till you can move it easy' . i hope this works for you.
@@TommysTanks Thanks for that info. This thing weighs a ton and it's sitting on my living room floor. Not sure about the pressure out of the drain plug but I'd have to connect it to a bucket of some sort with a hose going into it and that canister would have to be atleast 20 litres. I bought it about 6 months ago and never set it up. Until one of my sump glass dividers silicone came off. I thought your video was awesome and it said all the good things about it but not the bad. Read heaps of unbiased reviews off Amazon and there was so many negative points about the hw5000. One bloke who's been in the hobby for 10 years went through everything. Things like cheap O rings not sealing properly. Needing metal clamps for the hoses as there isn't much thread. The UVC chamber leaking after some time. The motor making tapping noises as the impellers aren't balanced when manufactured. Cases breaking after being pulled apart so often for maintenance. The drain plug shooting off and not being able to re attach it. All valid points and it's hooked upto my 6 foot that's 600 litres I don't want water on my floors. He tells you how to fix it all and I'm not taking any chances. I want to take the tap connector off and take the O rings into a plumbing store tomorrow and get better ones that seal properly. Without turning the drain plug open if I stop it, shut off both valves and open one the water goes everywhere. I do like the filter but its a pretty poor design. I had to lube the O rings on the inlet pipe as it started making a hissing noise and drawing air in after 24 hours

I've got a 180gallon running an fx6 looking for a second canister filter as my tank always looks slightly cloudy. I was thinking either the sunsun wh5000 or nautilus 2700. I think you've got me sold
I have only used canister filters outside in the ponds.. I am not a hater.. Whatever filter works the best for you or that makes you feel comfortable.. I love your tanks..
Not that I'm saying either filters are good or bad ( have no experience with either) but showing a tank full of cichlids which by your admission haven't done waterchanges to a lightly stocked tank with plants and compared water is rather misleading.

I got my sunsun HW-5000 yesterday. Inserted the filter media from my old smaller Sunsun hw-304 filter and started it... It was bubbling like crazy for about an hour and stopped once I slowed its flow down. And then after a while it started again... I am worried it sucks air in from somewhere. Is it possible? Or is it okay that there is sooooo much air trapped inside at the beginning? How long did yours bubble before working properly? Otherwise its super cool and since i have it in my living room next to aquarium (not closed somewhere) it super silent when not bubbling! With my old hw-304 i didnt even hear that my air pump or fridge is humming, but now I can hear it. Amazing.
@@TommysTanks Thanks! But its totally new and isn't dirty yet, so thats why I'm puzzled. I watched all your videos and opened the UV light compartment today and put lube on all the rubber seals and seems like it did the magic. Fingers crossed!

Came back to say that despite your perfect videos nothing helped, my Sunsun was just sucking in air and I think it is because mine had to stay next to aquarium (my aquarium is on the floor) not under it. It is really powerful and super silent filter, but these micro bubbles and a lot of air spitting sounds were too much. Just for trying I bought fluval fx6 and it doesn't have these issues - it lets all the air out at once and doesnt create micro bubbles. But it has its own problems: quite loud humming sound and floor around it vibrates a little. And its not that powerful too, but well I guess I need to run 2 filters then. Sunsun is really good filter but when placed next to aquarium on the same level it keeps getting air into system.
Hi Allen they stop making them right now .having to many small problem with the filter i will let you know when the start up again.you can get in the UK on ebay thats the only place right now
It’s a 6x2x2 -I’m just adding it as extra filtration to a South American cichlid tank ,I am just worried about the drainage plug and UV light because I’ve heard they are faulty with this filter
Hi Tommy's, you should also inform the persons that see yr videos which is the one that has the lowest consumption of energy, since hw5000 can have the flow reduced or increased electronically, what do you think about this?
@@TommysTanks The only problem that I see is refer to spare parts, because I am from Europe, and most of the countries here work with European brands, with this we buy this filter from eBay, Amazon, and others. All the best to you and yr family.

You can buy any filter you like for your tank it how much money you are willing to part with . do some checking on line to see what's best for your needs and how many fish you have i hope this helps if you like i can do a video on it .
@@TommysTanks im looking for a sunsun filter but if i buy hw 5000 will it be worth as my tank is small but i previously bought 303b for my smaller tank but the flow reduced in 6-7 moth so i dont want to take any risk
@@aquariumlife8904 I would buy FX4 SUNSUN HW 5000 new are not ready yet and is to big for your tank and i'm still tested it out SUNSUN HW-5000 so right now don't buy it .
@@aquariumlife8904 Yes but you see my tanks 4 tanks are 120 gallon on the big one is 240 gallon and the two you don't see are 140 gallon and 120 gallon that is why i have the large filters . if you buy the SUNSUN HW-5000 you will not be happy it cost to much right now and they still have problems . take it from me i would not steer you wrong.

I think in one way your right . but one day someone will make something much better the all of these filters.easy clean an run great for tanks over 200 gallon the filter now are ok but be nice to have the best that does everything.
