I was a part of a cult for a long time, and the main issue is that the rules kept on changing. One moment it's X, so you do X and then get chastised. Then they say it's Y, and you do Y for a while and then they say it's X. Add gaslighting and that's how cults keep you doubting yourself and afraid to think for yourself.

One worry with his stance here is that he's asking for special treatment on his ban. He isn't saying that everyone that was banned for the same reason should get their accounts back. He's saying that his shouldn't be banned because he happens to have a large following. That is pretty self-serving and I'm surprised he's staking out that position. If he's really in favor of free speech, then no individual should be more immune to censorship than others, full stop.
