A Million Ways to Die in the West starring Seth MacFarlane, Charlize Theron, and Amanda Seyfried is reviewed by Ben Mankiewicz (host of Turner Classic Movies), Robert Abele (Los Angeles Times Film Critic) and Christy Lemire (ChristieLemire.com).
See what other critics are saying: www.rottentomatoes.com/m/a_mil...
Seth MacFarlane directs, produces, co-writes and plays the role of the cowardly sheep farmer Albert in A Million Ways to Die in the West. After Albert backs out of a gunfight, his fickle girlfriend leaves him for another man. When a mysterious and beautiful woman rides into town, she helps him find his courage and they begin to fall in love. But when her husband, a notorious outlaw, arrives seeking revenge, the farmer must put his newfound courage to the test. Starring alongside MacFarlane are Oscar (R) winner Charlize Theron, Liam Neeson, Amanda Seyfried, Giovanni Ribisi, Sarah Silverman and Neil Patrick Harris. MacFarlane reunites many of the filmmakers behind Universal and MRC's hit film Ted including Scott Stuber (Bluegrass Films) and Jason Clark who produce, and Wellesley Wild and Alec Sulkin who co-wrote the script. I don't really care for MacFarlanes humor, but this review makes me want to go see the movie. It seems like Ben appreciated the movie on an intellectual level, as well as finding it funny. What I found interesting was how Christie said "I laughed a lot, but it wasn't a good movie".......a comedy is supposed to be funny, and if it makes you laugh.......mission accomplished?? I respect Christie and Ben's opinions as movie critics a lot, although I don't always agree with them. The discussion they had here sounded polarizing, but their final scores really weren't that far off. For some reason, that makes me want to see this movie now.

yeah am glad that you brought that up because that sound very odd coming from her. It was just very weird when she said that.
@Gaugzilla

I think it's kind of like empty laughs. Like how you can laugh at someone farting really loud and at a really clever joke, but you appreciate the latter more because it took wit and was distinctive. This is kind of just a bunch of fart laughs, with a few clever gems. It's not enough to actually say it's a good movie as a whole, even if you were laughing at how dumb it was.
@timothygraham6734
@timothygraham6734 10 лет назад
I also thought it was odd that Christie said "I laughed a lot," but then didn't really like the movie. It's almost like she decided, after the fact, that the humor was too low brow or something, and that liking the film would seem to insinuate something. I shouldn't speculate on things like that though, so I digress. I however, will see the movie, and if I laugh throughout then mission accomplished. It is a comedy, that is the point. I don't need to leave the theater still wondering whether or not the top was still spinning.

I have the opposite reaction of Ben in that I'm not a fan of comedy films where the lead is basically doing a stand up routine and are 'above the situation', instead of a real character. That's a very kind of American, smart-alecky brand of humour. It can work to an extent, like in Austin Powers, but the key ingredient is that all the best parodies have a genuine affection for the genre they're spoofing. I see no evidence from here that Seth Macfarlane actually likes westerns, even if he does.

After seeing the first trailer for this movie, I really wanted to see it, but I have been seeing a lot of poor reviews for it and was on the fence about actually going to the theater or waiting til it came out later. I now know that I will be seeing it in the theater. Thank you Ben. You mentioned all of the reasons this looked interesting to me in the first place. I know that Seth MacFarlane isn't an Academy Award level actor. So what. Funny is funny. Add a bit of social commentary just for kicks and I'm buying.

.....Just because Ben liked it and occasionally went against the norm doesn't mean he's an idiot. Sometimes people like MacFarlane's schtick. I do, but this movie was weak for his standards because of the plot and some of the casting, it still made me laugh though, which is what matters. Sure an 8.2 is high, but every critic on Rotten Tomatoes has a little line where it says they agree with the tomatometer x amount of times. No one is 100! I thought this was below a 6, so it's rotten, but christ. Differing opinions people!

I have to agree with Ben on 99% of what he said. Is this a great movie? No, not really, but it is funny, witty, and well-made for having a star like Seth MacFarlane. Yeah, MacFarlane is fairly one note as a live action actor, but that one note is done to its' perfection when talking about him. The dialogue throughout, with the lack of acting like they were in 1882 or like they were in 2014 was great. That is pretty much what made the movie to me. Not to mention Liam Neeson playing they antagonist was great. He makes a wonderful western villain, and I feel between him and Theron they stole the movie. I wouldn't go as far as to put it at an 8 or above, but a solid 7 as far as modern slightly raunchy comedies go. Basically, if there would've been a little bit more action, and a little less dancing sheep, it could've been a much bigger hit.

Can a movie be funny and generally unenjoyable? I think it sometimes can. Comedies can't be reviewed based on the amount of times that you laugh. Dramas can't be reviewed by the amount of times you cry. There are always many factors at play in your enjoyment of any movie in any genre. And also, I mean, WTF reviews are meant to be casual conversations between critics. They are not scripted. So don't hold what they say up to close scrutiny.

It's 2 hours?!?! Why are so many modern comedies so damn long? It's nothing but indulgent, especially when you don't have a plot.. Blazing Saddles was 96 minutes I think. This just seems like Blazing Saddles but way less subtle, and remember Blazing Saddles ain't that subtle [but at least it was about something] I'll probably end up watching this, but I can easily wait until it's on T.V. or something.

Oh and the length of many modern comedies these days is baffling. Knocked Up (love that one too) was 129 minutes.
@WAAAAAAAAAAAY
@WAAAAAAAAAAAY 10 лет назад
Ben Carroll I totally agree I really like Knocked Up too, but it is far too long. It's the same with Funny People [which is even longer]: I laughed a lot, it had quite a good story, but it just rambled and meandered on and on and on forever.... No comedy needs to be that long. Judd Apatow is kind of the worst offender when it comes this kind of thing; it's a lack of discipline really. Take Woody Allen. Almost all of Woody Allen's movies are around the 90 minute mark, at least all the ones I've seen. Because of this I never get an overwhelming sense of indulgence from his films like I did with a film like Funny People. Sorry for the long comment ha. It just really annoys me and it's gotten to the point where when a new comedy comes out from somebody I like, I immediately check the run-time and if it's pushing 2 hours I tend not to waste my time going to the cinema to see it... :)
@TheBenCarroll
@TheBenCarroll 10 лет назад
''Does liking Family Guy help here''? Okay, you don't have to be a fan of FG to like this film and I'm down with Seth MacFarlane's sense of humour (same goes for the other movie, Ted). While I stick with watching American Dad these days, Family Guy, to me, was hilarious for the first six seasons but after that, degenerated into a morass of recycled gags and jokes that were more sick than funny. In short, prime-era Family Guy and American Dad still remain his best and only good work on TV or anywhere. Either way, as previously stated: I laughed at A Million Ways To Die In The West just the other night.

TheTruthiest I have been watching watching this channel for a year and a half I think and I have watched some old videos as well. Even with superhero films, Ben doesn't read comic books and I get that. What I have notice it started to get repetitive is what he says about the action scenes and he doesn't get why that is happening or why this is happening and it makes me wonder then why bother reviewing superhero movies then. With other movies, there are times his reviews have been a head-scratching for me.
