Today is clearly the day for this one! lol. Right away, I'm intrigued by the origins of this painter. I didn't even know where Flemish people come from. Flanders isn't a country I ever hear about, to be fair. 😅 I'm also curious about this Golden Legend-esque extension of scripture that inspires the piece. We're warned not to add or take away from God's Word, so I'm a little wary of those, but still interested to know what they say (and why) on some level. I thought of the Annunciation scenes I've seen (with Mary's hilariously unpleasant facial expressions) when I saw this, so that detail was validating. Dr. Harris' point near the end about the disunity of European nations was interesting. What would it be historically accurate to say? How much variation was seen from artists in what we now understand to be Spain or Italy back then? On that note, there was apparently a lot of variations in individual artists as well! It was interesting to see how de Flandes' style evolved over his career. It makes me think of the modern musician - was it frowned upon with accusations of selling out or did people just accept and appreciate whatever was produced in real time? This is a sweet scene regardless. I'm glad I was able to see this one today. ❤

Firstly, I should say I watch and appreciate pretty much all these videos. And instead of saying Thanks. I'm going to complain. That's really bad. Still, here goes: For me these paintings are in large part about the technical accomplishment of the artist. And he doesn't appear, to me, to be very technically accomplished. You've covered this one and another Juan de Flandes, which I thought was technically relatively limited. Am I missing something? Anyway. Thanks for this. I came here from the Art Assignment several months ago and stayed. I've learned a lot.
