Another light facelift for Ford's consumer-focused full-size SUV. What's changed? Read our full review: goo.gl/GHW3mQ
Usually when the police pick a car, it's a sign that it's a solid, dependable vehicle for consumers as well. The Explorer has quickly become the go-to choice for police forces here in Canada when it comes to SUVs, mixed with Chevrolet's Tahoe. This Sport model is the top middle of Ford's Explorer SUV lineup, coming under the Platinum trim for king of the hill.
The 2018 facelift also revised the front-end slightly, with changes to the headlight design and fog light location. Aside from that there isn't much else new about the design of this 2018 Ford Explorer Sport. The exterior design certainly resembles that of a Range Rover with the large Explorer lettering along the hood, along with the style of grille they've opted for. No one will be mistaking this for a Land Rover, but it's not a bad design overall.
One of the biggest exterior features we don't see on other vehicles are the front and rear camera washers, allowing you to clear off either camera with the touch of a button. This comes in handy all the time, especially during the winter months when these cameras can get dirty. Other exterior features include LED headlights and fog lamps, front and rear parking sensors, automatic power folding mirrors, and a power rear lift-gate with foot swipe open.
Inside is where we feel the Explorer takes some hits, the interior doesn't excite us in terms of design, and we notice some serious quality control issues with the door panelling. Aside from that you do get heated and ventilated front seats, heated second row captains chairs, heated steering wheel, a suite of safety tech like radar cruise control, blind spot monitoring, lane keep assist, and emergency braking.
A number of options were also selected on this vehicle, including those centre row captains chairs, a dual panel sunroof, dual DVD players mounted in the head rests, roof rails, and all-weather floor mats.
Our full tour and review of this 2018 Ford Explorer Sport goes over these features, the things we liked the most about this full-size SUV, the areas we feel can be improved, and take it on a road test to see how the 3.5L EcoBoost twin turbo V6 engine feels on the road.

The "extra padding" in the 2nd and 3rd row seatbelts are the inflatable belts, which are an extra safety feature. They inflate upon an impact to protect their occupants in a crash. No offense (or offence in Canada) my friend, but sometimes you incorrectly describe some features which could be avoided by doing a little research before shooting the video. I realize that as someone new to the RU-vid car video review world, there is a large degree of trial and error involved. I absolutely enjoy your channel as a subscriber and I'm just trying to give a little constructive feedback.

We're always ready to admit when we're wrong. You'd be surprised though how much work goes into a show like this, especially when its one person filming, driving, editing, and also raising a family. Things get missed, we don't have fact-checkers like big shows do, so often we won't describe something accurately like in this case.

You did a great job on this review. I'm considering SUVs to replace our 2006 Sienna, so I've been checking out quite a few reviews lately. You covered all of the things that were important to me while still keeping the video down to a good length. I liked your camera work - pans and vertical slides. Well done. Audio was good, too.

Excellent review. Very good points. And your title says it all. I disagree on one thing though: that boring and outdated interior design, especially the instrument cluster, is shared across most Ford NA vehicles (Fusion/Edge/Explorer and now even on the new upcoming Ranger :( ). The other big let down for me is the lack of ground clearance: it does not even clear a parking curb and therefore that can be damaged for lack of ground clearance in a city environment. Yikes.
@PRNTestDrive
@PRNTestDrive 6 лет назад
Very good points, actually we were worried about the front end and curbs, that front camera certainly came in handy when we pulled into spots with concrete curbs in front.
@DalHarpJr
@DalHarpJr 6 лет назад
How high are your curbs? My truck clears them fine... If you're trying to get on top of a curb/sidewalk, you go up at an angle, one wheel at a time. Watch any off-roader tackle a course, and see how they position their vehicle. I can climb a curb with my car, without damage, which I've done! And if you notice the front bumper/spoiler of your truck, you'll see that it's rubberized to minimize or prevent damage to the hard plastics.

Nice review in general. I like your stuff. I'd love to see a snow road test on this. From my take: Okay, I like the interior alot. Exterior is more bland but livable. AWD system seems pretty good from the reviews I've seen. Road noise (you asked ;-) ) I honestly couldn't notice, but my current daily is a 14 year old Jeep. I really like Sync 3, I've used it quite a bit on a long road trip. Panel gaps.... that's one of those things that people make a huge deal out of... and I've never, ever noticed them in 30 years of car buying. I usually drive cars for a decade and hundreds of thousands of miles, panel gaps have never bugged me. Not sure why people make such a big deal out of it if there is no rattles and no air leaks. Thanks for the review! I always check out your stuff.

Damn... Some ppl complain about everything! You can sit in a Lexus and find fit and finish issues. This is not exclusive to Ford! I've owned a 1998 Explorer XLT V8, a 2002 Explorer E.B. V6, a 2007 Explorer E.B. V8 and now my 2016 Explorer XLT V6. Optioned with Navi (MFT), leather, panoramic moon roof, 20" polished wheels, 4x4 and tow package. I'm 6'5" 300+ and I'm very comfortable driving this truck. I've taken many 3,5, 7 and 10 hour trips (one way) with this truck and have no complaints whatsoever! Oh, and I wear safety boots in a size 13 when I drive to and from work, and have no issues with a lack of room in the foot well. This is everyday driving here. Not a few hours or days with the vehicle for review purposes...
@PRNTestDrive
@PRNTestDrive 6 лет назад
That's great that you like yours, but it also seems like you're very tied to the Ford brand, and often people who are die-hard fans overlook issues because they can't see fault with the products. We're always honest and straightforward with our reviews, and this was the way we found this Explorer. I'm glad you enjoy yours though, and that's the most important factor for your own ownership!
@DalHarpJr
@DalHarpJr 6 лет назад
Perpetual Radio Networks Yes, I like my Ford’s, but I also liked the 7 Honda Accords I’ve also owned over the years. From 1988-2010 in 4 and 6 cylinder, 2 & 4 door, Automatic and 5/6spd. manuals. I was just in the market for a 2018 Accord due to the 2.0 6spd. manual, but ended up with a 2017 Ford Fusion Sport, which for the money was a better buy than the Accord. Again, I like my Ford’s, but I also know that when something doesn’t work, it doesn’t work! And this truck works! I owned a 4 & 6 cylinder 2012 Toyota Camry, and both cars had build issues, that required trips to the dealership to correct. The drivers door was literally coming off of the V6 because the bolts weren’t torqued to spec. at the plant. And I had both cars for about a year each. But my 2002 Ford Explorer E.B. was bulletproof for 13 years, 185,000 miles until I was rear ended and it was totaled by the insurance company.
@hippiebits2071
@hippiebits2071 6 лет назад
I don't think he was implying the issues are exclusive to Ford but hey for A LOT of people that fit and finish isn't going to be acceptable on ANY new vehicle let alone one that stickers at 60k. Kinda just makes a person question how much care and precision went into the assembly of what you CAN'T see.

WAS there an issue with the SIRUS radio NOT working??? I bought a 2018 Explorer in Early August 2018 and the day after buying and setting up the SIRUS radio it stopped working ... "satellite acquiring signal" on the screen and nothing ... found out it IS a FORD issue after diagnostics from SIRUS ... FORD was aware (since April 2018) of the issue BUT not in a hurry to fix. Came out with a TSB in August and a fix in mid-December 2018 with FORD replacing the entire Shark fin and extra antennas mounted on the rear roof. NOW I have to get the free six month trail I never got ... they are sending me (FORD) a check for their half of the next six months to add to my six months due next month.

Here there's no explorer available, the biggest Ford SUV is the Edge, with only a 2.0 turbodiesel, not amazing desing but still more ispired than this One. Does the explorer use active noise cancelation? On the edge is a standard equipement and reduce interior noise due to microphones that 'hear" noises and speakers that produces an opposite sound wave, this effect neutralized some noise and keep the car quieter.
@PRNTestDrive
@PRNTestDrive 6 лет назад
I don't think they do have anything for that in the Explorer, definitely sounds like newer tech though! Is it on all the Edge models, or just the top trim? We featured a 2015/2016 years ago now, I don't think it had anything like that. It's an interesting approach to noise reduction though!

It has also been de tuned. In the Taurus it put out an amazing match of 400 horsepower and 400 pound feet of torque. The horsepower and torque curve match for a lot of the RPM band in the Taurus. That set up is amazing! I wonder why the de tune? Aside from the engine I cannot help but be let down by this new Explorer. That is some sloppy design and build right there. What is happening at Ford? This does not make any sense.

Pricey! I personally prefer the Ford flex styling inside and out, but that's all personal preference. The Ford lineup is getting priced a bit to close to luxury cars! I have an Acura MDX and the explorer is priced uncomfortably close. That EcoBoost motor is great
@PRNTestDrive
@PRNTestDrive 6 лет назад
We felt it was pricey at first too, the Explorer had always been a mid-size so we instantly were comparing it to the Mazda CX-9, but since it's made the jump up to a full-size the price is slightly more manageable. The Flex seems to be more functional though. If Acura uses the same interior from the 2019 RDX across their lineup, then the MDX would easily be the choice over this, and even for the 2018 model year the Acura's interior certainly feels nicer.

This is a very strange review. The explorer is a very comfortable and nice suv. There is way to much personal opinion rather than just a good straight forward review.

But that's a review... if there's no opinion than it's just marketing for Ford.

For god's sake, don't be lazy and take a minute to try the other seats. Just think that is great for this channel to have the chance of try the seats on camera with a big guy like you, a small host usually is going to say that the seat are O.K., so your opinnion will be very usefull.

We do try to film what we can, with some cars with more rear-seat features we'll film in the back, but for the most part with a car like this with essentially 0 features in the back we don't include it. We'll see what we can do moving forward though, we're always looking at ways to improve the show based on feedback!

Footwell is tapered due to safety offset crash 5 star rating. This is still a 34k vehicle with way too many options in my opinion. Thats why the quality isn't Lincoln Continental ish.

@PRNTestDrive
@PRNTestDrive 6 лет назад
We honestly have no idea how the segment classifications work here. The Buick Enclave got bigger for 2018 but dropped to the mid-size segment, even though the Traverse is still a full. We swore this was a mid-size until we started putting together the rest of the specs we needed to film and realized it's gone up a size.
@Tonyx.yt.
@Tonyx.yt. 6 лет назад
Perpetual Radio Networks maybe the average Ford client is more conservative and perceiced less worth a car called midsize instead of full size, you know what i mean, many people in North America prefer bigger cars as possible so they fell more confident (this happened even here but instead of lenght that is problematic for space, many cars are focused on height and small crossover between 400 and 425cm increase enourmusly popularity and numbers of models available in the last years)
@PRNTestDrive
@PRNTestDrive 6 лет назад
That's definitely the case. We met another Explorer owner and one of the main reasons he wanted it was 'bigger = safer'.

I don't think it's going to hurt sales to be honest, it seems like buyers of the Explorer are crazy loyal to Ford, so chances are Ford is happy with the current volume they're selling and not worried about pushing a major update.

We weren't overly impressed with it either, but we've got 52 weeks in the year and we gotta fill em up with something! We're always surprised with the cars that end up being popular here, the 2017 Hyundai Tucson was one of the first new cars we did that got decent views, along with the super base model BMW 320i.

We don't see the value at this price point either, there's not a lot of full size crossover SUVs out there, but we weren't impressed. That being said, it's not like we're hating on Ford, we currently have the 2018 Navigator and the fit and finish is significantly better with it.

@PRNTestDrive

Probably not, but I thought I heard a rumour that the brother of the designer behind a lot of Aston Martin's cars is a designer at Ford, hence why the Fusion has a someone Aston-looking front grille. It's possible the designs are similar, but I doubt any Land Rover development went into the Explorer. I don't think Ford owned them long enough.

READ HERE : im car dealer , I deal with lot of used car, 1. all for focus from 2011-2016 has tranny prob, 2.all ford truck has engine problem, 3. most of the ford car AND TRUCK HAS engine or tranny prob, thats why it come to ADESA auction because dealer cant sale those .... , 4. for any recall you go to ford dealer they will try to skip it at any cost ... i have proof in hand ,
@PRNTestDrive

The RX is technically in a different segment than this Explorer, but for the most part buyers aren't really interested about that. The RX 350 L would be the most comparable though since it adds the third row, so you're looking at an extra $9,000 over this. I agree there are certainly better options out there though.

@PRNTestDrive
@PRNTestDrive 6 лет назад
It should be something they can update, in theory. We drove the Navigator a couple weeks ago and kept our USB cables at home, relying completely on the built-in navigation which was quite good. If you can live without Apple CarPlay or Android Auto notifications, the Ford navigation system is pretty good.
@SuperBizalz
