In the real story, a contestant died, 10 people were fired, the show was canceled, the station was sued, and eventually went under. The worst part is a nurse called in strongly warning them, and they said, yeah, we know it's dangerous but they signed waivers.

I remember this happening, the radio station said it wasn’t its fault and that there was no way that anyone could see this would be dangerous. The radio station was inundated with phone calls from healthcare workers to say that this was really dangerous and they were all ignored.

Its so shocking to me that he literally starts his channel as a gaming channel , then switches to many contents like body building , how to lose a lot of fat , motivation , and even some technical things , and then he continuously uploaded a medical content for the channel I used to watch his gaming contents but then i got super interested in his medical content , keep up the good work man ^^ !

Water overdose is not a joke!!! Happened to me last summer, began with the worst migraine of my life. I kept drinking water, trying to stop the head pain. It was shortly followed by throwing up litres & litres of water. Heaving for hours with a brain-stabbing migraine is not something I would recommend. Thankfully I eventually threw up enough water to avoid a trip to the ER & managed to fall asleep as the migraine wore off. I'm glad my friend recognized the signs of water toxicity and potentially saved my life.

all memes and -emia laced humor aside you really are enriching all of humanity with the content you make , an accomplished doctor who uses real medical cases , explains them thru engaging visuals, precise editing smooth production while rocking the average viewers world with the sheer volume of KNOWLEDGE that each video is filled with. it's also very evident the time and effort you take in writing these in simple, accessible layman's language that really makes it accessible to any and all ages. it's easy to overlook or gloss over while binge-watching, but it really is obvious how much hard work and passion you have consistently been putting into your content, brotha. I think I speak for everyone when i say I wish chubbyemu was my primary care physician. ♥️

I remember this case when I was in 7th grade and my science teacher taught us about it. Totally got me so interested in medical science. Now I’m 19 and trying to study medicine. Thanks for this throwback!

This is so sad. Knowing that she actually died from something as innocent sounding as drinking a lot of water. It’s awful how preventable this all was. If she hadn’t done it, if she had puked, if her husband had immediately taken her to the ER…there were so many opportunities for this to not end in tragedy

Sad thing is he is telling an altered story what really happened was she died and her husband sued the radio station. If my mom died just to get me a wii I would be so depressed.

I grew up on that station and I still think of this event on a fairly regular basis. IIRC the station no longer exists. The hosts were all fired and replaced afterwards and it just didn't recover. Either they scrapped it entirely or moved it to a different station number and name. I was mostly raised by my mother growing up, so the idea of a mother dying from an event she participated in to win her kids and family a new gaming console just shakes me. My mom bought me a Wii for christmas, and theirs died from the aftermath of winning them one in a contest. It's one of those random intrusive memories/thoughts that still frequents my brain. I just can't imagine that kind of trauma.

Wow I never realized the most harmless liquid can be proved deadly internally because of a underlying condition that not even the patient was aware of and it collided with it causing her symptoms. Man I love your videos (recently discovered it) and you go into full detail about what is going on. I always say the tiny details matter and you straight up dive into it. Also, you don’t overcomplicate your wording like much other profs or other medical-sleuths. Really earned a sub and a like I’m going to look forward enjoying the rest of your videos.

I was taught to keep fluid intake to about 2 liters (0.5 gallon) a day, unless you're working out and sweating a lot, even then not more than 4 liters (0.9 gallon). Also to spread it out, I have had friends who stuck to drinking 2 litres in the morning, only to complain about headaches in the afternoon and thirst in the evening.

This happened in my neighboring town and I clearly recall the nightmare of this. The irresponsible nature of the radio station to *not* first check with medical experts was, to me, a horrifying fact. All Mom wanted was the cool gadget of the moment for her children. Sadly they got the game but lost their mother as she died.

-and thus, a legend did happen to be born.

Respect to this guy. He made spaghetti, found an ambulance, and even got shots of places contributing to the video, all for a 12 minute video of a mom who wanted a Wii.

For people wondering, the actual story, the woman died. The station was found negligent for presenting and hosting a contest with a highly fatal dosage of water. The burden rests on their shoulders, as they presented the contest. I don’t know why he changed the story here, but yeah. Sadly the woman died. The husband won 16m$ It won’t bring her back. But I hope the family can live comfortably and make some good memories. She might not be around but they can still learn to smile.

On the other hand, and this is something that I learned the hard way after having moved into a desert, where I was living had well water.. turned out it didn't have much for content of anything except the actual h2o, and being who I was I was out in the desert, Hiking, Climbing mountains (high desert in the sangre de cristo range) Turns out lots of sweating, plus lots of water consumption can lead to hyponatremia. I started having pretty much identical symptoms to dehydration or heat stroke, drank more water, sat in the shade, when it didn't stop getting worse in a couple minutes I called for emergency services, luckily I was on a well known trail, and not horribly far in, they dragged me to the hospital, and they took blood, sat me in a waiting area, let me have some water.. I'll never forget the doctors face when he came into the area and saw me with the cup of water and said "Stop it, Not another sip." they gave me an IV of that high sodium fluid. I learned that day, to put a small amount of salt, or pedialite in my hiking water. scary scary stuff, because the presentation can be the same for if you're dehydrated, only drinking more can kill you...

When I was married, preceding divorce, my wife drank over a gallon of water under this super hydrate delusion, then proceeded to develop a cracking headache. I got her to eat a bunch of salty food, with extra salt. Chubby would be proud.

This competition got infinitely more dumb when he told us they used DISTILLED water.

Ah yes, I remember when this occured. If memory serves, as it was happening she commented to one of the hosts that she looked pregnant because of how much water she had drank. At the time I had felt that it wasn't going to end well. I believe the station was held responsible, and was also forced to cancel a contest they planned to host to give away an Xbox 360 in the same manner.

For anyone who is still worried about drinker too much water, even if you have normal vasopressin function, just know that the body has natural mechanisms for making sure sodium content stays relatively stable. The kidneys can reabsorb water as well as sodium.

And that's why everything must be done in moderation. Even drinking water.

A death that could've been easily avoided if the radio station didn't offer ridiculous contests and if listeners used better judgment. A damn shame.

It's amazing how well the body is adapted to it's environment. Once, we were out at the white sands desert in NM, and it's fairly typical to drink close to 3 gallons of water in 2 hours without any issues other than feeling pretty worn out. And, you're sweating like mad and losing plenty of salt.

Glad you make these videos. It is nice to learn from other peoples mistakes. I like how you are respectful of the victims and do not mock them. Anyone can make mistakes.

its insane what so many people DONT call the ER for. my first & only ER call was when i did not stop throwing up (and, once my stomach was empty, violently retching) every 10 minutes for a good 40 minutes... which wasnt at all unbearable (like the head-splitting pain described in the video), but still pretty draining... and worrying, obviously, but nowhere near as worrying as this story

so my culinary nutrition teacher told this story in class, and my first reaction was to ask out loud, "did they win the wii though?" I was promtly sent to the principals office.

Mrs. S I’m so sorry that this happened to you, glad to know the DJs were removed immediately and that your husband received due compensation but there is no monetary value for one’s life and I talk about you all the time to warn others about water toxicity. Especially when I was a preschool teacher because it’s all too common for parents to give their babies water before their bodies are ready. Your passing will not be forgotten ♥️

The radio station should be made in pat for the harm done. This is a dangerous competition and they knew it.

Would you be able to do an analysis of a case of the Naegleria fowleri amoeba (also known as brain eating amoeba)? It's one of my biggest fears in life, but it would also be interesting to know the medical diagnosis and treatment in the ER for such cases.
