A Moment of Tiki Episode 59 Carving Tiki Bob

I don't have enough carved wooden tikis in the Lagoon of Mystery. I have lots of other decor but upright tikis are eye-catching in a way other elements are not. Apart from the pecan wood Moai I attempted two years ago I have not invested myself too heavily into large carvings. Until now.
In this month's episode of A Moment of Tiki I power carve a Tiki Bob. I'm hedging my bets a little, as Tiki Bob is a simple design (yay!) but demands attention to details because the simplicity of design makes mistakes impossible to hide (boo!). But who is Tiki Bob? Glad you asked! Tiki Bob comes from the tiki bar of the same name opened by Bob Bryant in San Francisco in 1955. Bryant was a bartender at the San Francisco Trader Vic's before striking out on his own. Bryant hired Alec Yuill-Thornton to design Tiki Bob, which was incorporated into the structural column out front and also turned into distinctive tiki mugs. Tiki Bob was the first bespoke mascot for any tiki bar, anywhere. The concept proved a great success, with Bryant eventually opening a second location in San Francisco and one in Sacramento. Alas, Bryant's Tiki Bob locations did not survive the tiki implosion of the 70s. But a strange thing happened--Tiki Bob escaped into the public domain. Lured by Bob's friendly face, amateur mug makers and artists began taking the design and making it their own. With this episode, I join their ranks with my own take on Tiki Bob. I hope you enjoy!

These turned out great. I appreciate how you take the time to explain the little nuances and difficulties in undertaking such craft projects. It really comes down to proper preparation, tool selection, and taking one's time to create great looking pieces. Your projects certainly give me food for thought.

Thanks for the kind words, Glenn! At some point I hope to try my had at hand-carving (at least more than the dabbling I've done thus far) but my sharpening skills need to improve significantly. Meanwhile, I'm still getting the hang of power carving. If I keep at it, I may be halfway decent someday! 😅

Those turned out really nicely, Jayme! Congrats on a great project; I especially love the table. Thanks for this great insight into how to do it.

I missed watching it live by minutes. You did such a good job. I love them both but there is something endearing about a stubby bob with a table on his head that makes me smile. Aloha from the Hale Lalo Tiki lounge on the Canadian prairies.- translation Hawaiian for basement-disclaimer I have changed its name about 30 times but think this is sticking. Thanks for sharing

Much appreciated! And props for the name--I can think of few people more deserving of a tropical tiki getaway than those living on the prairies of the Great White North!

I really like what you did here. Tiki Bob can be tricky to carve in palm wood. My experience in carving palm wood is that you don't want to carve too deeply (beyond a couple of inches). The extremely fibrous nature of the core of palm logs makes it tough to finish smooth. You did a great job!

Thanks! And yes, carving palm logs is quite a different experience than carving hardwood or even softwood. The short one was a piece of sabal palm and the tall one a piece of California fan. Both are far easier to carve than Mexican fan palm, which is like trying to carve rope! 😂

man this is so cool. Hard to believe that it was only your second/third try, they turned out so cute!

Thank you! There is a *steep* learning curve with power carving. I learned a lot from carving the moai, and that made these guys much easier. But even so, I learned a tremendous amount from one Tiki Bob to the next. it's an exponential still acquisition. I imagine I'd get pretty good at it if I carved every day! 😄
