Can it be April already? Hard to believe this marks the four-year anniversary of A Moment of Tiki! Honestly, I was doubtful I'd get to 10 episodes, much less 66!
A year and a half ago I published a video on how to drill out Japanese glass fishing floats in order to make tiki bar lighting. That has proven to be one of my more popular episodes, but it didn't take me long to realize there was more that could be done with glass fish float lights--even the cheap, mass produced ones you can find in craft and home decor shops on occasion. So that's what this episode is about: Taking your glass fish float lighting to the next level. The possibilities are practically endless, but hopefully this one gives you a good starting point to begin thinking outside the box.
Check out Batjak Knots for a good guide on tying float nets: www.batjakknots.com/

Thanks for sharing your process. It's time consuming enough, but going the extra mile to document the steps is a true gift you're providing!

I love that you show us how you make them. Finding fish floats in the middle of the Canadian prairies is impossible or they want a fortune. But I may be able to find glass globes and spray them. You are a brilliant. Oh no-more projects lol. I am working on rattan sconces that I only have the shades for. They remind me of the rattan lamp that you had done. I have to say I am envious of your binder of lamps inspirations I love your videos like always

That lamp binder is composed of printed screen grabs from FB and Tiki Central! You can make your own! 😉

Great stuff as always! I love that jig - thanks so much for the nice closeup footage, as we can now make our own! That'll really help, I appreciate it. Also, that's an excellent tip, wrapping your pliers so they don't mar the chain. Wish I'd thought of that when I made my first lamp haha! Mahalo!

Confession: I learned to wrap the pliers because once upon a time I didn't wrap the pliers. As I like to say, I make the mistakes so you don't have to!

Nice work and I have a ton of extra floats & want to jazz them up. Maybe I missed it but the red float looks different than the one you frosted? Was that one pre-drilled?

No, the red isn't frosted. I drilled it as well but I didn't think it made sense to show the drilling process twice. The light doesn't come through as diffused with glass floats that aren't frosted, but I pick my battles. The paint would not look great on the float when the light isn't on, and I'd have to cut away the rope and retie it were I to use paint on it. I didn't want to go there. If memory serves, Oceanic Arts had a technique where they'd sandblast the interior of a float once they drilled it out to create that diffusion effect. Very nice, but beyond my capabilities.
