Do the Monks always get along? Do they get anxious or even bored? What can we learn from them?
In this episode, Ciaran meets Venerable Juewei, of the Nan Tien Temple and Insitute in Wollongong - 90 minutes south of Sydney. Ven. Juewei started life as an Artificial Intelligence software programmer in Singapore in the 1980s, but about 20 years ago became a Buddhist nun. She now runs the temple's University and Insititue. And she invites Ciaran to spend a few days living at the temple, to see what monastic life is really about.
‘LIFE: Done Differently’ is a real-life 5-part docuseries hosted by Ciaran Lyons which shows amazing stories of people living their lives in what many may consider is a world of weird.

The narration is pretty decent in terms of content and accuracy, but his 'boyish' demeanor is a little too silly and doesn't always convey he takes it seriously. It does draw out basic questions and answers, without too much of a preconceived answer, though. So I suppose it has a use.

No...news7 that is incorrect....the entire goal was to show how monks live...then hes terrified of bees...can't cross his legs which is BS...is giggling constently....dude can't use chopsticks...but goes to asia....the whole thing is a milential bisexuality making us western men look bad......you should have gotten a veteran student....sorry. .just a fact

I know this comment comes to you a year late, but I believe he is showing how 90% of the people who aren’t familiar with Buddhism tend to laugh or not being serious about meditation or monk’s live…I know bc I have seen it first hand many times in Toronto where the multicultural live we have gives you the amazing chance to know others people cultures, religions, etc…many people laugh bc they don’t take things seriously or bc they are nervous, etc…so basically he is being very real about people’s behavior in these cases

Bit amazed at everything Ciaran couldn't be bothered to do: Learn to use chopsticks. Sweep. Not giggle. It would have been more entertaining to see someone at least try. His Daddy must own the station. Nevertheless, the nuns were terrific and the talks between them & the kid were charming... when he wasn't whinging.

Meditating and sleeping are along the same lines. The trick is to learn to stay consciously awake while your brain/body goes to sleep. Once you've done it, you will be compelled to meditate for the rest of your life. It's so interesting because you get to observe what your brain does in the early stages of sleep. It is very fascinating. Binaural beats can help you get to that state. Falling asleep while meditating is a good sign because it means you are relaxing enough to deeply meditate. If you just keep practicing, it will happen and you will be awake while the rest of you is asleep.

This was a beautiful look into in peaceful world. The most interesting part for me was the gardening. I love being in my gardens and value the bees as a special gift. Bee's work so hard in gardens and make my plants healthier.

I wished it would be possible to get a Buddhist monk or nun as a penpal, i think it would be a great gift for me to be able to be in contact and be friends with people as shown in the video:) Unfortunately I think such a program doesn't exist or I couldn't find at least

I'm growing up in a strict Buddhism family. Now, I'm an Atheist & I truly believe; Life is all about balance. Of course, meditation is beneficial for you & lots of research shows that. Again, nothing perfect.

I'm a Christian monk. I pray instead if meditate. I pour myself out to God, not the universe. I'm human, so I can't be perfect, but I seek to live my life in Christ, Who was the only sinless One. Prayer and living according to conscience brings one ever closer to God, the sinless and perfect. It's the process of sanctification, or increasing in God's grace. It takes being aware of our human weaknesses and overcoming them with the help of God...His grace. We empty our minds and then fill them with God.

This is what bothers me about Christians. They seem compelled to tell people that their way is the only way and that only Jesus is without sin. To me Jesus is awakened. Buddha is awakened. Both will lead you to a state of awakened-ness. It is in different ways but with the same ultimate outcome.

@@originalyou4069 in Asia, we usually shower at night as it helps us sleep better. If we feel sweaty or it’s very hot when we wake up, we can take another shower.

I feel this story was done with unwholesome intention. It is not funny, not entertaining, not informative, it is pure offensive. I am sure anyone with some respect will ask for fork and knife/spoon instead of using chopsticks playing with food. This is manner in a restaurant, let alone in a temple dining hall. I think the story put the host in a bad light.

@@kjoness they say that Jesus went to study with them in his three missing years, to learn mind over matter. Walking on water, healing ECT. Remember Jesus taught Love your neighbor, not make fun of him. If you have something to say make it kind and constructive. I love Jesus too, but if you truly follow his teachings they are similar to Buddhists.

Ciaran was born in Ireland, but moved to Perth when he was young. So you're hearing a hybrid Irish/Australian accent, which can sometimes sound American. It's something he's had his whole life - but we love it. It makes him unique. Thanks for watching!
